United Airline AUD $1305 Sydney to San Francisco

100

Fares for June were dropped yesterday. Missed the Air NZ offer earlier and average fares were around $1700 before this one came around.

For some reason, the fare does not show up from the united.com page. It only shows up when billing country option Australia is chosen on the provided link.

Just note that in those reviews they mention the ancient 747. This is no longer the case as they have upgraded AUS routes to 777s with 9" PTVs the same as Delta and Virgin Aus.

        Ooh good to know, thanks!
I've never been able to convince Mrs muncan to travel United again just to save a few hundred bucks. Maybe when they put on a <$900 LAX deal…

FYI, in October, 2014, United will begin service across the Pacific with the B-787.

        • Only Melbourne though.

      • Finally, I had a super crap experience with united on that route Mel-lax b747. Which completely set me off for life with united

      • And make sure you get a Economy Plus seat. Don't think they sell it separately, its usually reserved for elites though, but if you pick early you might be able to get it.

I have been told this particular route for this airline is TERRIBLE

Pay the extra and go air new zealand or virgin

    • It is, I know! I gave United 2 chances, not giving them a third.

Just flew this route on the new 777 a week ago today and it's fine. United charges for booze, but I worked out the $24 I spent on wine, while on a $300 cheaper fare, was more than worth it.

Keep in mind the Aegean Airlines travel hack to get Star Alliance Gold in two trips. I've now done my second with United, and will have Star Alliance Gold (ie. second bag, priority boarding, and lounge access) for at least the next two years.

    • How does this compare to silver on united which I think gives you the extra leg room for free.

Speaking of which, how much extra was economy plus?

      • +1

They said $69 each way or each leg, something like that.

My left leg's longer than my right one, so I'd be happy to just pay for extra space for one leg ;-)

      • Not sure, I was lucky enough to get free upgrades to Economy Plus through a friend who works at the airline, so not sure if having status with a different Star Alliance Airline would help with that. If I recall correctly it was about $180 each leg (for SYD-LAX/SYD-SFO) for economy plus (four extra inches of leg room), which I REALLY appreciated at the time but in hindsight don't think I'd be willing to pay for.

As Star Alliance Silver (which you get after only 4,000 miles, (and they give you 1,000 when you sign up, so really only 3,000)) you get priority check in and priority boarding (which they don't tell you about on the website), but helps when you are travelling carry on only, you don't have to worry about your bags if you are one of the first ones on the plane.

Now that I'm gold I'm mainly looking forward to lounge access.

    • Just be careful with which fare you buy as some United economy fare classes only give you 50% mileage with the Aegean Airlines frequent flyer club.

      See here for details:

  • I have ever flew from Sydney to Philadelphia for $8xx via Delta. I never seen ticket price to PHL under $1000 nowadays.

  • after knocking down a couple of sleeping pills, united is fine, even on those old planes. Customer service is excellent and their frequent flyer program is definitely worth signing up for.

  • Seems good.

I got flights from Perth > LAX on Virgin for $1250 all up the other day, flying end of November returning early/mid January.

Might still be around for anyone interested going to the US from Perth.
