        Yup just did 129.20

        • I got the 2TB. $54.15. OW did it no question.

  • Sorry having a blur moment but by external hard drive, is this the self-powered plug and play?

    • Has its own power supply.

      • Thanks. Sorry I managed to find it in the link just before this, so yeap unfortuantely not usb powered :( Would be awesome otherwise. Still pretty cheap.. wonder if I should grab one for a decent storage…

  • +2

:( stupid website wouldn't let me order

    • +1

same problem. no home delivery or click&collect?

    • +2

I see "ONLINE ONLY OFFER", but the only link active is "Shop in store". Am I doing something wrong?

      • You have to shop online from the store. :)

    • -8

      Me neither..

  • +1

The 2tb one for $57 is better value per TB :)

    • Holy Crap!

    • Where's this 2tb for $57?! :O

(dont worry think I might have found it)

    • It's also safer against disk failure (losing a 2TB drive vs losing a 4TB drive).

  • +2

Nice one OP! Best… price… ever!

… and before someone asks… YES, these drives can be torn down and used in most NAS boxes. They're not 'NAS Rated' but they should work fine. I run 6 of these exact drives in my N54L and haven't had any problems however I do recommend running them in a RAID6 config though to give dual redundancy just in case.

    • im starting to run out of space in my desktop

and my external dock doesnt take more than 2tb drives

If i wanted a low cost, low power NAS for just network backups and streaming. What would you reccomend?

an N54L is a bit too pricey for my basic needs

      • Erm, really depends on how much data you need to store and most importantly how much you're planning to store in the future ie. no point getting a 2-bay NAS box now and mirroring 2 x 4TB drives if you know you'll be doubling/tripling that in the coming years.

The N54L is very well priced in my opinion. It regularly sells all over the place for $299 but regularly comes down to about $250 or even as low as $229 but offers so much for someone in your position. You can put one drive in it now but two is recommended for redundancy and then you can simply add drives as you need them from then on. I'm not sure you'd be able to get anything better for the money sorry let alone anything cheaper!

    • I've had about 5-6 (my nas, fam, in-laws, friends) of these Seagate drives fail completely over the last few years (different houses). I would strongly discourage buying these, especially in a NAS situation. Also had 2 Samsung drives, which when I googled for info, pushed me to the Seagate website for recovery management. Using WD NAS Reds at the moment.

    • How are you fitting 6 in there? I know you can fit 5 (4 in the bays, 1 in the cd drive), but 6?

  • Noticed they had some other cheap HDD's on sale on their website too.

Can someone explain the difference between the seagate 1tb for $118:

    https://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/computers-office/drives-…

And the WD elements 1 TB for $58:

    https://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/computers-office/drives-…

Same size, is there a difference in hard drive speed or other quality that I don't know about??? Seems that if they're all 1TB i might as well get the cheaper WD elements???

Not sure how much shipping is for the seagate as that is an onlnie only offer discount price…?

    • +1

The Seagate is showing as $70 for me. Either way there is one difference between these drives. I assume the Seagate would have a standard Seagate branded 2.5" drive & small separate USB Interface PCB inside which is what most manufacturers do however the WD uses a custom WD drive with an integrated USB interface built-onto the drives PCB. This makes the WD drive smaller but it can be detrimental too in that if the Seagate unit fails there's a good chance you can pull it apart and use the standard 2.5" drive in an external HDD Dock to extract the data but if the WD unit dies then there's nothing you can do as it's all integrated. I only know this because I've helped quite a few people recover data from external drives over the years and the only way to get data off a WD is to send it away and pay the big bucks.

Of course not all drive failures are due to a faulty USB controller so the Seagates can also catastrophically fail… it's just that the Seagates offer that one extra step of DIY recovery. In my opinion the Seagate would be the better option but as long as you have the data elsewhere then there's no real reason not to save some $$s and get the smaller WD.

      • Yeap that would be correct - $70 was the seagate, $58 was the western digital?

Ahh so basically what you're saying that similar to an external 3.5" hard drive case, you can rip out the seagates versus the western digitals, which are 'integrated' so to speak? Anyone can diy open up a seagate and re-install the hdd inside into another purchased 2.5" external case, correct?

Is the USB controller merely the device facilitating transfer between the case and the recipient computer/laptop via the usb cable?

So the Seagate you're really paying for added 'option 2' backup plans?

In terms of the actual performance, speed/power etc - are they much of a muchness i.e. exactly same between the brands?

Just that you see seagate, WD etc releasing same TB capacity hdd's with varying prices even amongst their own brand lines and you wonder that there surely must be some difference to justify the price differential??

        • Yep, the you can remove the Seagate drives and use them in another 2.5" external case or drop it into a USB dock or even use it in a Notebook. The WDs with their integrated USB controller make it difficult if not impossible.

Yes, the USB controller is the 'middle-man' between the SATA interface on the HDD itself and the USB socket on the rear of the enclosure.

Yes, I suppose you could say the Seagate offers an additional option if you ever need to recover data.

Regarding performance I could tell you but I'd say they'd be pretty similar. It's not like you're comparing USB2 to USB3 so they'd both be very close.

Finding out the answer to your last question is like discovering the meaning of life ;)

        • Ok thanks. So basically all Western Digitals are integrated? or are these just the cheaper elements?

Similarly are all seagates that you can buy are non-integrated? If so then I'l make sure I stick to Seagates.

        • I doubt all WDs have integrated controllers but I know for sure that all the tiny portable WDs do. They're a good 15mm shorter than most other drives so they're easy to ID when shopping around.

        • Except when their boxed up though? :(

        • No, of course not.

  • Thanks OP, sorry for the dump question if I tore down the HDD and can I use this in the Dlink DNS 345 NAS. or should I buy the NAS compatible drive? this is looks like very cheap for 4TB. really appreciate for your advice and answers.

  • finally, been waiting for these to drop to the same $/gb as the smaller drives. can finally upgrade some of these old 2tb drives i have. thanks OP

  • +1

Are any of them actually available for click and collect or online purchase? looks like they only have store stock on my side.

  • -3

This post deserves 500+ votes. I couldn't believe my eyes. Bargain of the week.

    • you mean negative votes…? It will soon get that.

      • I couldn't find cheaper for local stock and for me it's a great bargain. The cheapest I could find was $180ish.

  • +2

Is it just me or are the delivery and click and collect options are disabled for the 4TB? Only in store is available

  • +1

Hmm true, it says online only offer and then none of the really good deals have any stock anyway so if you check in store i am thinking they will say, "that price is only online and our price is different".

  • +1

There was a button to add the item to cart although it seems to have disappeared now. I'm assuming they're out of stock.

  • Negging - noone can order.
    Thanks anyway OP

    • I'm honestly not sure but couldn't you use this link to go elsewhere to pricematch?

      • +1

Nope, most places would decline and say either BigW has "no stock" or "clearance online only".

You can always try your luck and see if you get an undertrained staff member that doesn't know though.

      • -2

        Negging - noone can order.

was available as click and collect as well as delivered when i ordered mine. neg not valid.

        • -1

          Lucky you.
          Negging on insufficient quantity then.
          Neg still valid.

        • Lucky you.

no luck involved, you just have to check the site often to cash in on the best deals. no point coming in 30 mins to late on hot deals like this.

          Negging on insufficient quantity then.

thats even more stupid. just because your bitter you missed out because you were to slow does not mean there was less than 50 available as the rules call for. your still invalid

        • +1

Actually, I saw this deal very soon after it was posted and there was no stock when i went there…so I am not sure how much stock if any was actually available when this was posted up.

        • Lucky you.
          Negging on insufficient quantity then.

hey champ, theres still stock in store. just picked up 2 for the original price :)

          https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FZK016AOnu4/U09UvmjnrfI/A…

you cant just expect everything to be plonked on your plate for you, the best deals take some work.

        • I have to disagree. I had them put 3 on layby and when I went there they refused to give them to me at the price as they claim it is online only…

  • +2

doh, didn't we all buy this 2 weeks ago from amazon and still waiting for delivery?

http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/seagate-1tb-b… Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive

it's $114 at office work, while it's $70 from Big W, I think i will try to get a price match.

  • Either price error or out of stock since you can no longer order. Oh well, sounded good at the time.

  • how's this work, 'shop in store', 'online offer only'

    • And almost every store shows as "Low Stock, call XXXXXX"… bizarre and misleading add…

  • Rang my local (Coffs Harbour) and they said "We can't match that price and we have no stock".

However they are chasing it up for me to see what's going on so hopefully they will call back and I may have some more info.

  • +1

They are doing a dodgy here.

    Checked the following two things;

Southland has stock, wont do the online price.

Online Warehouse out of stock, still lists the item at that price.

Not sure why they are still listing it on the website.

  • Brookside bigw Brisbane has it in stock, at regular price. But officeworks wouldn't price match at $136 because it said "online only"

  • +1

Grrrrrrrr. How can you buy any of these hdd ? Says online only but you cant buy online….

  • +2

Bloody hell I was after a 4TB drive for my media consumption and wanted to buy it locally. I turn away from OzB for like 15 minutes and this comes and goes. Faaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrkkkkkkkkk!!!!

  • did anyone manage to buy one online?

  • +7

Officeworks have received an email not to price match with Big W today due to Big W not having stock.. They are catching on to ozbargain unfortunately :(

  • This deal got 28 positives, am i to take that 28 people managed to order?

    • Just picked up the WD portable 1tb in Golden grove big w for $58

  • +1

successfully price matched at OW 5 mins ago for 2TB one, in Melbourne city end up paying $54.15 for one

    • Which store ?

  • For those people who love WD (like myself) but HATE soldered on drive interfaces, I guess the only proper solution is to buy an internal drive with an external caddy to turn it into a portable. Oh well!

  • i bought 4TB from amazon a few weeks back and when i looked at this i thought i did a blunder ..

but looks i should be ok .. still not happy to miss out on this deal

  • Thanks OP.
Bought the 2x Seagate 1TB Slim Portable Drives for $149.
Cheapest on staticice (http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=seagate+bac…) is about $84.

  • What's the quality like on the 500GB Touro Portable? I'm going to use it as Wii U add-on storage with a Y-Cable.
Also how do you return stuff to Big W if there isn't one in your area?

Edit: Just noticed out of stock. Still interested on quality of the drive and return methods though.

    • I get about 82MBps sustained write speeds on this drive over USB3. It's a bit faster than WD Passport in my testing. Not as compact as the Passport though.

  • +1

People in SA, GOLDEN GROVE BIG W are honoring the online price in store, just show them your phone or a print out

    • thanks OP, if i had them id give you 4 thumbs up. took me 15 mins on the fone but they honoured it for 2 of them plus i still have my click and collect paid via paypal pending. just call me BroDan ;)

my receipt if it helps anyone else https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FZK016AOnu4/U09UvmjnrfI/A…

mostly they agreed caus online it says to call to check local stocks so if they give others static about trying to claim these push that angle :)

  • Officeworks is no longer price matching - they rang and confirmed it was an online offer only, and as it's out of stock, they no longer need to pricematch = they only match for IN-stock items.
    Melbourne CBD store.

    • +1

I am sure thats either the Elizabeth STreet or the QV store. Dont ever go to these 2 stores for price match. There are 2 more stores in the CBD and I got the 2TB for $54.15, paid with ING , so 2TB for $52 all up. Deal of the month for me :D

  • +1

Bought two for $130 each at OW price match. Mwahhahahaa too slow OW. Too slow..

  • Got one at OW but was charged shipping at $9. Oh well. Local warranty at least.

  • for this price i reckon just buy it from bigw if you can… not worth the hassle of convincing OW! 2TB is a great value! The site allowed me to check in-store stock, has anyone had luck picking up instore for the same price?

    • I did call up but they wont do the same price in-store. You have to go online.

    • Just called them, not available near Sydney :(

  • Didn't get the deal at my local OW. I've found that OfficeWorks South Melbourne has never really honoured deals like that.
Everytime I've been over there (it's the closest one to me), they have always given me trouble with price matching.
Anyone else have any feedback with that store? Or even recommend which OW have worked for you?

    • Try the Yarraville store, the best customer service I've experienced and that includes price matching.

    • Try a few more store, I get my 2nd one at the 3rd OW I try. It is in Doncaster.

    • I got them to price match on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 deal a few weeks ago that was at Bing Lee for $249 and OW was selling for $374. Got it from them for $237.50 after price match.

    • same as the one at Fitzroy

so on my list: NEVER go to Fitzroy & South Melbourne for ANYTHING!

  • Price matched at OW Morley(WA), fantastic service, just showed them a printed page of the Big W deal and all done at the checkout $129.20 :-) Still had a dozen or so on the shelves.
