Good price, but "define word" in google search is really all I need.

  • +2

Bargain, definitely a mistake so if you know any literary geeks or students you should tell them cause it will not last long…

  • Let me get this straight: they're selling an electronic dictionary with "it has less words than the full thing!" as a feature?

    • +4

      Off to Wikipedia for you!
It's been named 'Shorter' since 1933.

      • +1

Well the point I was trying to make is that it's electronic so I can't see it being shorter as a feature I'd really want. As compared to reducing 20 volumes in the physical format.

      • <edit> Err… beaten to the punch.

  • +3

Its $2.99 in the US iTunes Store converted to $3.79 in AU. Someone's forgotten to put the extra '9' in!

    • or.. perhaps the bigger picture is that selling electronic dictionaries isn't as profitable as initially projected. IOS7 has dictionary built-in and then there are worthwhile freebies - that's good enough for most people left who care about such quaint things.

It would be interesting to see how Apple handles this error. I've never heard of an app purchase being retracted.

      • Words with friends has a dictionary. That's all you need
        need

      • "that's good enough for most people left who care about such quaint things."

Being able to spell properly is more important that the rating of "quaint".

  • how does this compare to the Dictionary.com free app?

    • +1

You can experience the difference by buying this and looking up 'chalk' and 'cheese'…

This is a steal given the printed version goes for about $100 on Amazon and $200 here…

      • -1

Just go to a south african book store online, the dictionary and thesaurus is 130 rand ($14 + postage)

        • Eh? There's no thesaurus! And the Shorter OED is 1500 rand, or about $150…

Please link to this mystery $14 copy…

  • Well done OP. Good find!

    • +8

They will not understand whatever you "reaported"

    • +2

Seems this deal is perfect for you ;-)

  • +5

Awesum, now eye can lern too spel sumfin niga

  • +3

Mye ownly probblem wyth tha dickshunry ees thatt eets sow haad tu phind tha werds thatt ew ah lukeing phour.

  • +2

OK I didn't need that but I bought it anyway because of the "big" discount, doh!

  • Is this an "offline" dictionary or you need to be online for it to work?

  • Already have the 'concise' version, am I missing out on much?

    • +1

I have the concise version as well. The difference is the Concise version has 240,000 words whilst the Shorter version (this version) has 600,000 words. What I don't like about this Dictionary is that you have to buy a separate Thesaurus. The Dictionary.com app (which I have as well) includes a Thesaurus.

  • +1

    Well I am a bit confused how much I saved 59.99-3.79 = 56.20 or 29.99 - 3.79 = 26.20.Bt all I know I saved ..thanks op

    • +3

The truth is that you just spent $3.79 !

  • +1
  • +8

Do i need this, or am i just buying to "save" $56?

  • Thanks op. Great find!

  • I purchased this app (which is not sold by Oxford University Press) but noticed afterwards that there are reviews of other dictionary apps from Mobile Systems that question the authenticity of the content. I am not sure how content like this is licensed and was unable to locate any other information on the web. However, the comments above seem to be generally positive.

    • Noticed that too, but still bought it as it was on OzBargain.

  • I have purchased the app "Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, 8th edition". Do I need to buy this app ?

  • +1

    iOS's built-in oxford dictionary is pretty good…

  • +1

I don't need it, but got it at that price. Oh ozbargain!

  • +3

LOL OzBargain really isn't a bargain when you buy all these things.

  • too late… they fixed the error… missed out.

  • $37.99 for me… guessing they fixed the pricing error?

  • I still have the page on itunes open at 3.79, should I still purchase? Does it show the final price before hitting purchase?

    • +1

Well the process generally occurs server-side, using the pricing on the server side Otherwise a quick memory edit would result in your item being only 2 cents. Only if you have added it to your cart might the item retain the $3.79 price.

  • Looks like they've also made an error with the price of the Oxford Dictionary of English and Thesaurus.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/oxford-dictionary-english/id…

It looks like it's also supposed to be $37.99 but it's listed at $12.99.

Edit: Looking at the prices of Mobile Systems' other products and they seem to be all over the place. :/

  • I'd love to get this but seem to be unable to get it for $3.79 in the Oz app store. Was it available there but now expired? Thanks.

  • +1

Well I'm still on itunes page with $3.79c, and when I click buy I have to enter my password, if I do that and enter shouldn't be charge $3.79?

  • Thanks to the poster! Bought this a few days ago and got the cheap price….not sure when i'll use it, but couldn't resist the bargain!
