  • I'm assuming "NEW" is a preconfig that was canceled, not a return? Great prices then!

Disgusting in year 2014 they still sell laptops with such slow wired ethernet and poor screen resolution. I imagine 10/100 is just as cheap as gigabit in terms of parts. All these artificial crap specs just to differentiate price points / models and make business customers pay more. Kind of like fixed storage sizes in tablets being so small yet retail at such big differences depending on 16 vs 32 vs 64 gig etc

    • This.

I've been looking for a cheap laptop ~$300 with gigabit, but everything seems to be 10/100!

    • well of course 10/100 would be cheaper. cheaper transformer, cheaper chipset, more tolerant pcb layouts etc.

gigabit has been mainstream since 2000 ; in 14 years of refinement your telling me manufacturing costs are that much more expensive than fast ethernet that would justify 100-baseT usage ; I can purchase from ebay a gigabit pci-e network card for $3 with $1.69 shipping.

You seem well informed; can you custom build us a laptop with gigabit and a 1080p screen with windows 8 for $299? Given CPU's and screens have been around for over 14 years and have been heavily refined this should be a breeze! I would find it disgusting if you can't. ;D

        • well no I have no idea how much cheaper it would be other than yes it would be cheaper. eg. a gigabit port requires 4 pairs whereas a fast ethernet requires two. So maybe a gigabit port costs $3 in parts and fast ethernet costs $1.50 in parts (no idea on R&D cost).
For a cheap laptop they cut corners on the 100's components in the laptop - so if you're saving $1 here and there it adds up to hundreds of dollars.
I own a dell laptop and they cut corners on everything.

    • I am pretty sure that is a misprint, I have a two year old Inspiron 15R that has gigabit Ethernet.

The refurbished are not cheap or a bargain.

  • drop extra $80 to $100 on top that listed price…sounds ok for me…

  • Hi, anyone knows if I can get the TRS refund if purchased from Dell Outlet ?

    • Price includes GST so at a guess I would say that would be a yes. Edit: assuming they provide you with a tax invoice.

    • Yes I was able to get a TRS refund as they provide a valid tax invoice

I'd snap up one of the 15R models if it had a better resolution (even 1600 x 900). The old dell I have that has just died had the same resolution as these models and I bought it 5-6 years ago!

I rang a few minutes before their advertised opening this morning to try and pick up the 7000 series 17" model they had (FHD screen), but was called back an hour later advising it had been reserved already :(

  • wouldn't recommend getting these refurbished laptops…

did some orders with them, and the experience was:
few went faulty just weeks, and few just died after 1 year or so!
there's always a reason why they called "refurbished laptops" & why they sell it cheaper!

  • still have some brand new
