Current 2013 model - specs http://www.asus.com/Tablets_Mobile/Nexus_7_2013/
I've been monitoring the price on this for a few weeks now. Appears to be best local offer for instore pickup, though delivery is available for approx $5.00 Assume it's also open to OW pricematch (brings it down to $234.65). New model expected Jul/Aug so may drop further as release date approaches.

    That's a LOT of GBs…
    Fixed, I see.

    • yeah, caught that, sorry!

      • it was a glitch

  • Take it to JB hifi and watch them squirm. That's supposedly below their "cost price".

The link stated "Speedy dual-band Wi-Fi and optional 4G LTE for blazing internet speeds. Stay connected anywhere, anytime", but the product is WiFi only.

    • +1

When 3G phones are so cheap these days why can't they add 3G capablity to these tabs for a fair increase of the price. As soon as it has 3G the price jumps close to double.

      • +2

Because they have to add a SIM slot, a 3G/4G antenna, and then do additional testing on this for various frequencies. The cost of all that has to go somewhere. Im assuming the cost of the 4G antenna is still a bit high.

        • +2

That's simply not true. The cost increase certainly doesn't reflect the $100-192 cellular surcharge.

Think about it, you can get an entire 3G phone for $30! The cellular hardware would be what, $5? Likewise you can get an entire 4G smartphone (ZTE T81) for ~$100. The cellular hardware would still only be ~$20-30.

Don't believe me? Have a look at this iPad Air teardown - https://technology.ihs.com/463579/new-ipad-air-costs-less-to…
The cellular hardware is valued at… $32.

The reason the 3G/4G pads are so much more expensive is not because of manufacturing costs. Its because they know you'll pay more. Its just market segmentation/profiteering.

        • Your assumption here is that Google/Asus have the same hardware parts cost as Apple does. I highly doubt this would be true, especially since Apple sell a lot more iPads than the Nexus tablets, which would probably mean that they can reduce their hardware component costs a lot more based on bulk orders. I know this is an assumption on my part, but each company sources differently from different (or sometimes same) suppliers at different rates, based on the model number and availability of that component. Also each company does different levels of testing which again, depending on the length of this testing is an additional cost to the company. So to compare a ZTE 4G smartphone cost to that of a Nexus device is apples and oranges im afraid.

        • +1

If you're not happy with Apple and ZTE, what would you like to compare?

There are MANY more teardowns to look at if you wish.

          https://technology.ihs.com/451425/groundbreaking-iphone-5s-c… - iPhone 5s cellular hardware - $32
          https://technology.ihs.com/409518/samsung-galaxy-note-101-ai… - Galaxy Note 10.1 3G cellular hardware - $15
          https://technology.ihs.com/388811/samsung-galaxy-tab-carries… - original Galaxy Tab 3G cellular hardware - $10

          More here: http://www.techinsights.com/samsung-galaxy-note-3/

The point I'm making is that 3G/4G hardware honestly isn't that expensive. Manufacturers overcharge for it in that same way that they overcharge for storage/NAND. Often you can get an entire smartphone for the price of the cellular upgrade.

        • You are totally missing the point that the hardware is only one part of a devices cost. There is also R&D, production, labour costs, testing and the fact that they are a business not a charity so they want to make a healthy profit so that they can fund the development of future devices. Just crying about the basic costs of components doesnt make sense so I dont know why you're still harping on about it.

  • +1

Very good price. Should get it soon else no stock

  • +2

To wait or not too wait, that is the question.

    • Wait

    • No don't wait. I got it back in Dec lowest at $279 @ Binglee.

There will be no stock as its closer to new release if there's any, new one will be $399

At this rate its going to run out soon

    • +5

If you don't really need it then wait. There will be a better model out soon and these will drop in price.
But if you need it and want it now just get it, these things are excellent and a bargain for $250.

      • +2

I'll wait then. End of financial year sales should be interesting.

    • +3

Buy it with 28 degrees card or any card with price protection and claim back the difference when price drops.

  • +2

I bought mine in the middle of 2013 for $318 and have been an Android convert ever since. For about $260 it's a steal, but there'll no doubt be a newer model out before the end of 2014 - so its a 'need' based decision.

  • +2

If I order this and something goes wrong after sale, I hope I don't have to deal with Tristan.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140277

  • This is an alright deal imo. The new one will probably come out in late July for the US and if its like last year model won't be released here for a few month after that. And I doubt the new one will be close to $400.

  • Decision time. Which one is better? Ipad mini or this one if the price is the same?

    • Mini is slow and still more expensive than this. Screen resolution this is better too.

      • -1

        Nexus 7 is 1920 x 1200.. iPad Mini is 2048 x 1536

        • That is iPad mini with retina display are you talking about? There is a huge difference in pricing.

        • Ahh sorry, I thought you were referring to the retina display model.

    • i have both, mini gets alot more use. probably because i have an andriod phone

Price matched at office works last time on a similar deal and got 10% off bing lee's list price + delivery

    • +2

Just priced matched Office works with delivery for $239 :) It will be delivered tomorrow afternoon.
      Thanks OP!!

  • new models take forever to come out and never when they are supposed to, unless the new one is going to have a micro sd or usb port take this deal now

  • I have heard Nexus 8 (HTC) is coming in few months time if you want a bit bigger screen. But good price for Nexus 7.

    • HTC? WHYYYYY??? :-(

      • That's my general sentiment as well. Their track record with tablets is not flash at all. So long as Google has some strong input (ie, the tablet isn't just a blown up, 8" M8), I'll still be interested.

        • Guess we can only wait and see.

      • lol. No idea mate. It will come with Intel processor and Qualcomm is still fighting to get that order.

  • Awesome tablet, price match at OW and never look back!

  • I got the samsung galaxy tab 3 for less than that price at Good Guys from a promo. Thought ill be satisfied with it but the tab seems to lag often. Its pretty slow.

    • +2

Tab 3 is awful. One of my worst ever purchases.

      • Agree. I can't believe I bought the tab 3. There's another promo, google nexus 10 for 325. Is the nexus better and should I get that?

  • Should have waited for something like this before purchasing the old one… Oh well.

  • next nexus 7 is coming out this june or july, lol
    its gonna be nexus 8

    • That is actually 8" tablet not 7". But I do agree, size wise 8" inch screen is perfect.

  • how long you gonna wait? These stuffs can never wait! Get it and get over it!

    • If this was directed at me, I purchased the old version a couple of days ago for $150. I would have gladly paid the extra for the better screen. Oh wells. Still pretty happy with the purchase, which is what's important.

Good Guys Belconnen were only willing to do a price match of the online only price so included delivery)ie $255 (despite Bing Lee being up the road), claiming the in-store price would be $298. They also claimed that $247 was "$30 below cost".

Walked up the road and Price Matched - 5% at OW Belconnen. $234 no questions asked and they didn't even include delivery when calculating the 5%.

This all happened last night (2014.05.01) so no guarantees OW haven't dropped their price back to $247 by now.

  • Grabbed one from officeworks Mona Vale today… No questions asked… Showed the Bing Lee site and they knocked 5% off :-D

  • link shows the price as $ 327 — seems its expired :(
