I have been trying to get another gtx670 on ebay but keep getting sniped. I might sell my gtx670 and get a 770 and upgrade to sli later. i play games on high and they look great. last few have been farcry 3, tomb raider and bioshock infinate. I'll get watch dogs but want a new GPU to go with it.

This is my first build and think it is ok. one thing i'd change is the case. while it is solid aluminium there are better looking out there.

    • +2

I have an ok case… as its under the desk I don't really care much how it looks but air flow and being easy to assemble I do.

    • +1

And later on you will find yourself get sniped again when trying to get a 770 on ebay.

To be honest, if you are not gaming with resolution higher than 1080p, single card is just fine these days.

    • I'll get watch dogs but want a new GPU to go with it.

Guess it's lucky for you that the new nvidia game to be bundled with GPUs will be watch dogs.

      • -7

Yeh my bad I copy pasted my specs before I upgraded the CPU, couple of things have changed since then including the PSU which also has been upgraded, I sold it off as I heard bad things about Antecs quality.

    • nice!
so jealous and wish i could spent 12 grand on screens like you have!

How are they hooked up? , curious of how it all works given the video card has a single dp and single hdmi port.
I thought hdmi 1.4 could only push 4k at 30hz for one screen and display port 1.2 could only push enough pixels for one 4k screen down the pipe?

      • -1

4 way titans mate sold the 780Ti which I used with the 30 inch dell utrasharp.780 was overkill for a side setup and I sold it for a good price as hype was high.

        • +8

So you are running 4 way sli titans?
On a motherboard that only has 2 way sli?

So we are up to $12k on monitors, $6k on graphics cards and the specs you originally posted having been wrong on cpu/psu/graphics card/probably motherboard….

And after all that… the benchmarks i am looking at for 4 way titans indicate around 55 fps at 5760x1080 (which is 3 hd screens wide and one hd screen high, for a total of 3 hd screens worth of pixels)

ONE of those 4k screens you have 3 of is 3840 x 2160 in resolution.
(which ends up being the equivalent of 6 hd screens wide and 2 hd screens high for a total of 12 hd screens worth of pixels for 3 of them all up)

Are games at 13.5 fps fun?
Are they still fun at over a grand per fps?

        • +18

          Lol I'm calling bullshit.

          ur just jelly

        • +6

Of your fake PC? Or your terrible trolling abilities?

        • Those benchmarks you have are wrong, as I run in that same resolution and get from between 30-60 fps on most games, 250-300 on CS:GO, which is my most played game by far. I have a GTX780, which I OC'd a bit. Other than that, yeah, Davo is full of shit, just a shame to ruin the credibility of your whole comment with that.

        • +1

You run games across 3x4k screens?
          Thats 11520x2160 resolution all up…
And that's what he is claiming.

heres a link showing 4 way titan setup at only 5760x1080 res not even hitting 100 frames in good games.

          http://us.hardware.info/reviews/5231/5/nvidia-geforce-gtx-ti…

And he says he is running double that resolution.
So pretty much half anything in those benchmarks for the 4 way titan at the highest res in each test for a rough fps i would think.
So less than 30fps in anything in the bench pretty much?

10 seconds.. takes me at least 20 WITH AN SSD. I must have done something wrong.

      • You most definitely are. (no troll)
My PC, i5 Haswell with SSD boots in less than 10 secs.

Check you dont have too much stuff on the boot drive. SSDs run fast until you fill them over 50-ish%
I have a separate drive for non-essential programs (ie games) and files, so my boot drive stays lite.

        • It's over half empty at the moment :/ Is thee a special way you have to install the OS?

        • +1

You are possibly comparing apples to oranges, some SSD's read/write times are slower than some mechanical drives. I am talking recorded not stated… through benchmarking, before anyone gets their knickers in a knot :P

Try comparing SSD benchmarks of your models?

        • Check your startup programs, and check your bios settings. Those are usually the ones which add to boot time

My bios splash screen on flashes for a second, and I have no startup programs. I can launch my browser or whatever program straight away.

To answer bondy below, I have a 128gb Plextor
I'm not a tech-nitty-gritty person so I have no number to contribute though.

And to answer imcold, it's from cold boot. I dont usually sleep my stuff because boot is so fast, and doesnt waste power.

      • +1

probably boot from sleep.. not cold boot ^^

      • Tons of things could be the issue, here's another to consider.

How many drives you have connected to the sata ports. Perhaps some of them are faulty or take a really long time for bios to detect and boot them. Maybe you have it set to check the cd drive first.

Change the drive boot priorities so that your ssd is the first on the list. Having it check for a cd, usb whatever first all adds to time.

Ssd's are nice for boot times, but it's not the only factor (although probably the biggest). Having it plugged into a sata 2 port could slow it down too depending on how old your motherboard is. Lot's of things to consider without knowing the rest of your system.

Bah, didn't realize how old this post was. Got distracted and forgot the page I was looking at was searching for something else lol, oh well.

    • Impressive build! How hard was it to get OSX to run on it? Have you had any issues or trouble since?

      • Thanks! It was actually a lot lot easier than I expected. The only hard part is getting a OSX installable USB which I had to make within a VM but that's all. I changed the BIOS to a Legacy boot when installing OSX and then to UEFI.+ Legacy so I could dual boot using the Chimera bootloader. That is installed by the Unibeast utility itself so its easy. Also, I didn't have iMessage working at the time when I first installed it but have manager to get it going since then.

Overall, it was really easy and made even easier by reddit.com/r/hackintosh and tonymacx86's great guides.

        • Nicely done! Dual booting with windows?

        • Yea, 1 SSD each for windows and osx.

        • Well done.

You able to see the dual boot screen? My first hackintosh had a 7950 too and never was able to see it so I swapped it out for a 780.

        • Yea when I boot up my comp, it shows all the hard drives connected and I just select either Windows or OSX.

        • You know what that means? It means you did fantastic! I had a black screen and windows was the second drive and more than half the time, I'd accidentally boot into OSX. Annoying as hell!

Well done though. You managed to do this better than most.

        • Ahh you used that one. Interesting. I was trying a different method for my cousins computer as what i did to my own was compatible with his. Thank you very much for the link also thank you Ozhunter, I will probably use them when I start my rebuild at the end of the year (hopefully get my cousins computer running with OSX).

Its a good system if you get another mobo

      • Unfortunately I don't have any old compatible parts to test out which component went kaput.
But when I opened the case it did have a faint burnt smell coming from it :(

Replacing the mobo and CPU would get expensive.
I'm in the hunt for a new laptop anyways, so I might just spend more money in getting a gaming laptop instead of replacing my desktop mobo and CPU

    • Ever used 32gb of ram?

      • I am a programmer, so the 32 GB RAM comes in handy for running Eclipse, database, webserver etc..
The SSD is great for that as well.

Not in NSW are you? I have some parts you could use for testing if you want.
Sounds like a dead mobo but. If it was PSU it wouldn't start at all.

      • Thanks! I am in Sydney and Sydney West. Where about are you located?

Might be a late reply, but I had this EXACT issue and it turned out that it was a stick of ram causing the issue! If you want to be sure, take out all but one stick [if possible] and try booting? Wouldn't hurt you at all except waste a few minutes of your life and could save you some dollars! I'd like to hear if it worked for you too, because it surprised the hell out of me that it could display those symptoms.

      • Thanks. I will give that a go.
Not if you would need a minimum of two sticks… but will try..

That's a nice 'I won't be seeing pussy for a few years' setup you've got going there.

Yes, I have gotten "The virgin is strong with this one" comments before :D

I really hope those are fake specs, that poor PSU.

      • Under full gaming load you'd be looking at under a 600W draw. The PSU would hold up just fine. There's only 5 internal HDDs and 3 SSDs that require power and they only draw 10-17W each… when under load.

That PSU would be quite comfortable with that system.

        • The stock 7970's alone have a 300W TDP, 2 OC'd versions plus the i7 is at least 700W. Add in those 5 HDDS and motherboard and you'll be up at 800W. While the corsair's are tough psu's, running it at over 90% load is asking for trouble.

        • And when you actually go to the trouble of measuring what they actually use the system will use under 600W under full load.

The PSU doesn't check the online specs page and supply what they say, it provides what they actually draw.

      • Why? It's not going to tax the PSU in any significant manner. A good 750W can run a very powerful rig with a two of almost any card on the market. I have a Platinum AX760 that can and was until yesterday running an R9-290X and GTX780 with no issues what so ever. A good 850W PSU could do that with ease. Good PSUs are better than you think.

The psu seems to cope just fine, I have always had good success with the Corsair PSU's ever since the toughpowers came out years ago. I am more woried about the UPS tripping on full load. I was going for a silent PC but the case was too small to fit aftermarket coolers on the 7970 as most of the aftermarkets took 3 slots each so they tend to scream a bit when gaming. I could not be bothered making a customer water cooler for crossfire just for silence.

      … why?

      • It has the recommended PC build…

        • +2

… but no-one is asking for recommended builds…

        • +1

          Please ignore it then.

I went all OCN and Whirlpooler on this… doubt i'll have a life anytime soon XD

    • Which monitor do you game on mate? And how's the performance of the GTX780 on the 1440p while gaming? I only have a 1080 at the moment and am looking to add a 1440 next week or so. Figured I'd ask since you might know.

      • Depends on what fps you are getting now, i noticed that going from 1080 to 1440 doesn't actually affect fps all that much… that's just personally experience, perhaps i'm not doing it right. But yeah 1080 —> 1440 is like a <10fps difference.

Also, as i have GTX780 in SLI my fps is usually 110+, so i use adaptive v-sync.

        Hope that helped!

        EDIT
If you like i can do some benches (TR and Heaven/Valley)

      • I got a 780 with a u2711 and it's alright for the majority of games. There'll be a few newish titles where I need to turn down the settings to get min 60fps due to shitty optimization like ac4.

I have no doubt I'll need to do the same for watch dogs too.

        • Lol AC4 is so badly optimised that even i can't keep it above 60… though i have heard thats because the game itself doesn't allow for triple buffer >_>

        • Supposedly you're meant to turn v sync off in game and have it on in some external program just to get v sync working properly but I've tried a few things to no avail. So yeah, the game's junk. I regret paying $25 for it. Only own most of the previous iterations because of that Origin 'promotion'.

It'll teach me to ever get on a hype train again.

    • Just a question in regards to the HDDs.. do you notice having too many old HDDs slow down the whole system? I think my ones are slowing it down… I mean of course if you are loading apps from the they will be slower but I'm talking about when you boot and it spend some time initializing the other HDDs… I have a Sandisk 256gb SSD and 1 750 WD HDD and an old 500Gb HDD…

      • +1

Not really, all core programs, with the exception of games are stored on my SSD. So on startup, they are quite fast. Even lightroom and codecs are stored on my main drive and i don't use very often. Also i used sean's win 7 optimization guide from OCN, that might help… (he also has a win 8 one if thats the OS you are using).

        Warning
Although after using that guide, i have an issue when shutting down… alot of the times, fans and PSU will still be running after windows shut down. I narrowed it down to a possible win 7 mis configuration but have no idea what it is =/

    • Though i'd add some pictures of my rig =)

      Here

My parts list is on there as well… though i haven't updated it for awhile… but the water cooling build is the same as the one i put on there.

Looks like a good candidate for a MAME gaming PC.
