$479 is a great price for a great phone. The minor improvements in the Z2 don't justify an extra $300 in my opinion.

    • -3

Just wait another 3-4 months difference will be $150, then its justified for z2. Then ppl will rethink why they got this deal.

      • I highly doubt a phone like this could drop below 400. It still requires some money to produce this.

      • -1

Neg all you want. Some people just can't accept the truth. CrazyCS already said in 3 months will be around $600 for z2, maybe even high $500s

    • +1

To be fair the screen on these compared with the Z1 compact or the Z2 or most other modern phones is pretty abysmal. To some people it would be worth the extra to get the Z2 or sacrifice some screen real estate and get the Z1 compact for a similar price.

      • Um the z1 is full HD and the z1 compact is 720. z1 has higher ppi than z1 compact. Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. If you're talking about the ultra then fair enough.

        • +1

It's not all about resolution. It's viewing angles and vibrance. The Z is washed out and has poor viewing angles compared to those other phones.

        • That is the Z not the Z1 which has a better screen. Although I dont find any problems with my Z, guess I dont view a phone on angles.

    Warranty period 2years?? Aus Stock??

    • +1

MSY don't sell grey imports AFAIK

      • But for some reason their warranty is only 12 months

    • Sony still only provides 1 year warranty. Telstra offers an additional 12 months from their stores (i.e. making it 2 years if you buy from them)

      • +2

That's Australian law though, isn't it? To have warranty for the length of the contract

        • Correct.

    Please add shipping to title

    • I am not sure about shipping cost as I always go to a store and I don't have an online account with them. maybe someone and help telling me the shipping cost and I will add to the post. Thanks

    • +4

You dont need to add plus shipping when they got stores in every state.
Thats like asking every time someone posts a coles or a woolworths deal to add plus shipping.

      • Yes, because they have a store in each city in every suburb on every corner…

is the Varsity Lake one open back yet?

    • Don't think so, yet. I'm in Northern New South Wales, so hoping soon too.

regular Xperia Z is now $329. I'm going overseas on Monday, has anyone got any opinions if the Xperia Z1 is worth the extra $150 over the regular Z? It's either that or the Huawei Ascend Mate…

    • +3

I would go the Z1 - the Snapdragon 800 is a great chip and you'll get noticeably better battery life.

    • If you're considering a phablet in the Ascend Mate, why not go Z Ultra? It's cheaper than the Z1 with same specs but just bigger screen.

      • Ascend mate, $320 at JB Hifi. Includes a LED flash, and is borderline in the size department already, 6.44 inches is too big :/

    • regular Xperia Z is now $329

Where did you see this price? Cheapest I've seen is $350

      • +1

MSY although it is out of stock stock is store depenedant.

        • Good find, the Z is cheaper again, last time I seen was $379 . Should I add it to the post?

        • +1

No, wait until I buy one before you cause a stampede to the stores ;)

      • Hmm, should I sell my Moto G & get the Z?

    • Yes regular Z has overheating problem that affect the waterproofing. 3/4 phones me and my mates own have been back for warranty.

I believe they fixed it in the z1 - it runs much cooler.

      • So the heat causes the waterproofing seals to shrink thus weakening?

        • Something like that - more to do with thermal stress. Also the z1 has a massive improvement in low light photography compared to the Z.

The design change in the Z1 seems to have addressed it with different edges and a plastic rear cover.

      • The Z1 is not 100% it would seem reddit. Google results allude to it being related (for the Z at least) to an update to 4.3 and being fixed in 4.4. I know 2 people with Z's neither with issues, one is running 4.4 the other some custom 4.4 based rom.

Personally I'll be chancing it with an Xperia Z, I can't justify the extra for the Z1 considering it may have the same fault anyway.

    • Get it, we have 3 of these Xperia Z in our family. No problems at all. No overheating at all on the 3 we have, one has music stream over 4g for hours most days, another is on wifi at night and used heavily. Water proofing works fine (one is used in the shower to play music, another gets wet when hiking and also rinsed under a tap when used at the beach.
Battery life still great.Mine says estimated 3days 14 hours (with my normal usage) and 7day20 hours on standby , thats at 89% battery. I charge about every second day (every day when a lot of music streaming).
Had the phones since they were first released by Telstra - around a year.

I prefer the Z to the Z1, smaller physical size and lighter (same size screen), and heaps smaller than the Z2.

what's the difference between this one then?

    • That's the original Z released Q1 2013. The advertised one in this bargain is Z1 released Q3 2013.

      • -3

dude we talking the ultra here not the 5"

        • +2

What, you linked to the Z, not the ultra.

        • -2

What he mean is that the difference between the Z Ultra in this deal and the Z in the COTD deal.

But that is kinda dumb question since he already know that one is a 5" iphone and the other is a 6.4" iphone.

        • :S

        • That 'iphone' of yours sure loves auto-correcting :)

        • -2

Yes, smart phones = iphones :)

  • My gawd I'm so tempted to get the Ultra….

    • +1

      Ultra was $399 @Sony centers?

      • Not anymore …..and I was even more tempted back then but just missed the deal….

        • Kogan is currently selling it for $429 + shipping. It'll only be a matter of time before it drops down to $399.

  • man if the Ultra had the camera from the Z1 I would have bought it at release RRP. I'm now stuck waiting half a year for the Note 4 to make my big screen + great camera dreams come true (besides Nokia 1520, windows phone is not for me).

    • Why not choose Note 3 now?

      • note 3 camera is good, but not on the level of the Z1 and 1520 cameras. If I was to buy now, I would get the Nokia 1520, but don't want to deal with WP 8.

  • Almost bought it - then read this. Z1 Screen cracks by itself - because of Heat - holding in hand …

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Xperia-Z-Cracked-Screens/3707…

    Just got Saved .. !!!!

    • Why hasnt this phone been banned yet due to screen cracks issue? Shouldn't Sony make product safety recall etc?

      • +1

thats the xperia Z not the Z1… I believe the z1 its been fixed with the pocket cracking.

    • I have read the Ultra has similar issues. I had one on order from Sony for $399 last time but backed out.

  • I saw my friend's Z1 have a different fault. It was a problem with recharging which resulted in returning the phone for warranty repair after 2 months of use.

When the power adapter was plugged in a beep would sound to show it was connected, then 1 second later a different beep would sound to show that it was disconnected. 1 second later it would beep again and the on/off beeping repeated until the battery got drained. The recharging dock gave same results. He said the problem started as intermittent after only 1 month of use.

  • heres my 2c:
dont get the z ultra, the screen tends to crack for no reason at all and sony does not take responsibility.
research this yourself, its been reported many times.

    • From what I've read the Z Ultra (I do not know much at all about the Z/Z1 issues) screen does not crack for no reason at all it cracks due to stress on the device caused by being in people's pockets or other situations that apply a force that will bend the device. This is a widespread issue but I have never read of it cracking all by itself.

I think anyone considering the Ultra should budget for a stiff case and tough screen protector (preferably tempered glass) to avoid this potential issue. This will take away from the device's extraordinary slim looks of course.

      • No cracks on mine so far. I don't carry it in my pocket though.
It'll definitely flex if kept in a pocket.

        • Me either though I am babysitting it so to speak until I decide between 2 sturdy cases I'm considering.

I would prolly go with Armorz Extreme R tempered glass if I hadn't put a couple of nasty scratches on the back of it :| (be warned new Z series owners, the back plastic scratches very easily) … I think this will sort of "hold the whole thing together" since it's glued on to both front and back.

The nice thing about this is it only adds a ~1mm on each side and it's clear so it doesn't mess with looks to much. Oh well, hopefully new owners will gain something :p

      • my friend had his ultra z sitting on the table. clothed by a sturdy case and extra screen protector (tempered glass) on top of the stock sony one, once he came back, he had found the screen cracked and unable to use the touch screen.

btw nothing will ruin the slimness more than the official sony case with battery.

  • When you buy a Xperia, you shouldn't worry about cracked screens, that's just cosmetic, the thing you should worry about is a cracked touchscreen digitaliser. Due to overheating, a single crack appeared and now I can only use the bottom 5th of the screen. They don't honour their warranty in Australia. I used to think Sony was a trustworthy brand.

    • "Cosmetic" looks is a huge part of owning a phone for most people and it will cause many of them to seek repairs or replacement though.

  • Most models will have isolated incidents where the phone overheat, screen crack etc. Not sure if the Z Ultra is good or not but my Z1 works brilliantly since I have it. Camera is good, battery lasts the whole day plus more on moderate use, and everthing is smooth.

    • +2

if you read up it seems much more than a few isolated incidents. No-one is saying it happens to every phone, just that it seems much more fragile than similar phones.

      • This ^

  • +1

I would still rather an LG G2 at this price point.

  • This is cheap, I paid $532 for one from Kogan couple of weeks ago :(

  • Out of stock

  • Just thought I would post here because I have owned a Z for about 14 months now. Have a couple of issues with the phone:

    • don't risk it in water despite being resistant
    • wifi range is terrible compared to other phones I have used
    • Phone speaker equally bad
    • It does get hot however my screen is all good besides general cosmetic deterioration

Besides that I really like the phone and I am thinking about getting a Z2 this weekend.

  • +1

I've got an original Xperia Z I've had for 14 months as well, and it works like a champ!

Agreed that the speaker is shit, and the audio volume isn't good for driving decent full sized headphones (fine for canalphones/earbuds though). I have no issues with water resistance though… just took it to Port Douglas last weekend and filmed some fish underwater.

I think the screen issues are blown out of proportion. It's a pretty solid unit that I've dropped a few times with no probs at all. But to be on the safe side, maybe get a warranty if you grab one?

  • I'm considering buying the Z1 from Kogan for $369 + delivery. Is there any real benefit in going with the more expensive LTE model?

At present I'm just using AldiMobile - which is 3G.

    • Resale value?

    • I'm seeing the Xperia Z1 at $509 at Kogan. Are you sure you are looking at the right unit?
      Xperia Z is $369 - still 4G, though.
      Xperia Z1 compact is $479. Also 4G.

Generally only a $10 difference to get one with LTE (see SP) - you never know who your next plan will be with.

    • buying the Z1 from Kogan

Maybe you meant 'Z1' as in Z ver.1 & not the Z1 model that is Z2's predecessor?

  • Great phones, couple of friends have the Z1 and it looks great.
But do we really need a phone with a 6.4" screen?

    • Z1 is 5". Z ultra is 6.4"
