Help needed - new website for coupon/sales

I have a website which is on it's last phase to be launched. Can you guys have a look at it and give me feedback and reviews? I would really really appreciate that. You can also suggest me for the things that I can do to make it better. Website's name is http://icorim.com

    looks fine actually…

    • It's fine but needs a lot to survive

Please have someone proof-read it. There are lots of grammatical errors, and missing punctuation and so on.

Maybe it's just me - doesn't anyone else find that sort of problem unprofessional?

    • Thank you. That was a good pick. I will remove grammatical errors. Can you give some more about everything else?

      • What's with the domain name? How do I pronounce it?

        • It's I-CO-RIM. There's no special meaning of icorim (I haven't found).

  • I was also wondering if a student can launch websites like this. I'm a student. What are the rules that I should follow?

    • +1

What do you mean? Do you mean in terms of Centrelink you might be getting?

      • I mean the legal ways(ABN, TAX). I don't have the right to work more than 20 hrs a week.

        • Not too sure myself, but I think the limitation applies for paid employment. I will consider this to be a 'home' business.

Worse come to worse, they'll probably ask you how many hours you devote each week? They probably won't even care since they have no way of verifying the information provided.

        • Thank you. I already have an ABN of sole trader. Do I have to apply again for 'Home Business'?

Its a website and a new establishment, you will spend many many hours setting it up, its not exactly a 'job', you're a student setting up a website thinking its going to make you money, maybe it will, who knows? The one thing I've learned with websites is backup all the time. You can claim stationary, electricity for computers, computer hardware, internet (cant claim it all if its a shared connection for personal use).. im sure you get the picture.. you can even claim fuel/restaurant bills if you're meeting 'clients' and service jobs for your car if its registered for business use with the RTA.. doing this increases your greenslip, insurance and rego fees so you need to sit down, study it all and evaluate if its worth it.

If you have a dedicated room in your house, you can claim it as business use and calculate how much space this room takes in your house, for example 5%, then you can claim 5% of your mortgage (and even work carried out on the room like renovations) on tax but when you sell your house, you have to pay 5% tax on the selling price if you end up selling.

        • That's an extreme information. :) Thank you.

    • Anyone can make a website.

Honest feedback? There are already too many useless coupon websites out there.

    • You are right but we would like to engage more users in our website and try our best not to make it same as others.

      • +16

        Thats what they all say.

      • +11

How are you going to make it different?
You're basically just copying the very website you are asking advice from right now…

        • -1

Good point. That has hit my mind already. I'll try to make a difference.

        • +4

Sorry mate OzVoucher made by OzBargain is better

  • +12

"The most promising coupons listing site found in internet."

Don't make up quotes for marketing. That's worse than being unprofessional. It's also awful grammar. Makes you look especially seedy and uneducated.

    • +1

That's just something we came up with to fill the space. Will replace that with something better. Thank you for the feedback.

    www.ozvoucher.com.au
    ^^ best in the country

    • +1

      copy that one

    • +3

Sorry that one does nothing but just collect all the coupon codes on OzBargain :) Doesn't even try to "engage users".

  • Fantastic looking site! I'm thinking of starting up my own site too (dw not a coupon site lol) any chance you could give me hints/advice on how you made your website? or if there is a tutorial you used? any help would be much appreciated!

    • +1

Thank you. You can find some video tutorials to learn online at www.udemy.com. Both free and paid courses are available there. I recommend you to load your website with some frameworks like laravel, zend framework, symphony2 etc. unless you are a professional to load a custom one.

      • great! I will look into that. Thanks heaps for the advice!

All I can see is a white page with PHP errors.

    • Ditto

      • Sorry sk3iron, we had some issues yesterday. The errors are gone. You may have a look now.

    • Sorry Mark-F, we had some issues yesterday. The errors are gone. You may have a look now.

is this just not what Retailmenot.com is?

    • Yes it is. It's like every other coupon website. We will bring extra features slowly.

      • What sort of extra features?

At the moment your website has nothing to offer, since as you said it's like every other coupon site.

You have no member base… all you're going to be is an imitation of whatever website you copy deals off of.

        • better user experience will be a priority now.

        • +2

That's why he's here, to ask advice. He hasn't even launched it yet so why did you expect there to be members…? Maybe read why this post is even here before you shoot people down buddy.

Sure it's a basic site focussing on a well covered market but everyone has to start somewhere.

        • Well good on him for copping it on the chin, but i was talking about the UI. it looks almost a carbon copy of retailmenot and other such sites

        • Thank you, Andrew. That's helping me too.

        • Exactly. Thank you.

  • +4

please don't follow retailmenot and some other coupon sites, don't make us click an extra click to get to the coupon. other coupon sites launch pop ups etc or some sites fail to show code or make us do surveys etc to show code.

If the code is coded into the hyperlink (like vistaprint), let us know.

    • Cool! I'll keep those 'extra clicks' on mind.

It feels extremely messy. Something I would back straight out of if google directed me in.

The main thing is the organization and formatting that needs a bit of a clean up.

    • Yup, design needs to be worked on. Thank you.

    • Lack of HTTPS and HSTS
    • I can't afford it right now. But I'll try my best to make the data secure.

sorry, its too cluttered. perhaps you need to hire a graphic designer, tidy it up.

    • everything are jumping out, screaming pick me.
    • cut down unnecessary text & content
    • the white background is distracting, and i think if you change it to a darker background even if its light gray, it'll make site less messy.
    • too much gray background. you need to design a colour scheme and stick with it. at the moment your site is looking like a generic template
    • its good to have margin around images and texts, but some on your site are unnecessary, making site longer and happy. tidy up space after title, paragraph etc
    • logo on header, hard to read what the tag line is.
    • header make header height deeper. and text The most promising coupons listing site found in internet. bigger

I can mention lots more but really, you need to hire a graphic designer -_- …. all the best.

    • Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Remove the words 'coupon/offer' from the tab headings, just have 'Latest', 'Trending' and 'Most Viewed'. I'd also add a tab called 'Just Released' for new coupons.

    • Good call. Thank you.

  • +2
    • some spelling and grammatical errors

    • the word under ICORIM and some other areas are too small

    • We read from left to right. So put your 'Home', 'Category' and 'Blog' tabs on the left hand side rather than right hand side.

    • Better wordings. I do not know what 'specialty pages' are

    • Thank you so much

Regardless of whether or not 'coupon' websites have been done to death, there are a couple of things I criticize when I visit websites.

    • Not a big thing but image resolution. I hate pixelated images, even slightly. It's distracting.

    • Page elasticity. Since swapping to a single monitor setup from a triple, I find myself running two, three, even four windows at the same time.
If a website can't maintain its form when the windows are resized and moved around, it instantly bugs me.

    • Your footer is off as well. For pages that have no content (i.e. one of your categories), you have nothing to pad your footer to it's proper position. I had this problem when attempting to build my own website.

    • Grammar and spelling as well. Comes off unprofessional and slack.

Apart from that, I don't mind the colour scheme or layout.

    • Thank you. much appreciated.

i find it hard to remember the domain name :(

    • exactly. It is not the brand's name. The word doesn't relate itself to coupon or deals which makes it less memorable.

Looking at a few similar websites : ozbargain, slickdeals, topbargains, hotukdeals. We have an indication of what these websites are without actually visiting them.

      • Sorry about the domain name, its a new word. Let's see what happens with it.

        • +2

Hey, don't be sorry about it :) You're steps ahead of everyone who is just sitting around in front of their monitors :)

        • Well, thank you. I'm loving this community.

  • +1

Why have I not heard of OzVoucher before???

  • Simple looks is good.

Sorry to be a bit off topic but I just think the domain name is hard to remember. "Hey, I saw this coupon a few hours ago at ike.. imko..iro.. nevermind"

Also, a .au website is feels more like home for Oz people. .com is just like "maybe they have coupons for US or Canada, meh.."

    • Yup, that sounds better. Thank you.

      • Definately get an AU if you are targetting aus shops. I don't like the logo or the name though.
I'd choose more blue less green. Also I think showcoupon should show it in the list instead of a new page.
Maybe call it couponwallet also have couponpurse (site changes color).
