Hi Guys,

Running a 24 hour sale on our new Tread Depth gauges

We are doing one tread depth gauge for $1.95 (normal price $3.95)

and also doing 2 for $2.95 (usually $5.95)

Our price seems to compare pretty favorably with our competitors, and all our stock is located in Australia.

As always, happy to answer any questions below

Cheers,
Matt

  • I don't understand what these do. I usually just measure by eyesight. We don't own trucks… If anyone really wants to wear tyres down to an absolute minimum before replacing than they are going to know it come time to actually jam them on in an accident situation in rain.

    It's not rocket science…

Yeah a lot of people will just go by eye, but you tend to find most mechanics etc will own a couple of these so that they can measure exactly.

They are a handy tool to have, and we've priced them pretty cheaply.

If a mechanic owns one of these it was an impulse buy that he/she never uses…

I was thinking the same thing but a tool is a tool and I guess if you are really into vehicles you would want one.
      Seems cheap enough.

  • I had a police officer measure my tread with his fingernails considering whether to charge me!!!

    • +9

Sounds like I need to start marketing these to the police departments then :P

    • What about the tread wear indicator?

    • +1

Must have very precisely well groomed fingernails to be able to judge them at exactly 1.5mm!!!

But like above said… Why the hell wouldn't he just check one of the 30-40 or more (TWI) tread wear indicators located on every tyre???

    • +1

I use a finger and rotate it around the tread until I find a wear indicator. Although I generally look for the wear indicator by sight because you never know what is embedded in a tyre.

      • +1

If you look at the sidewall of a tyre (on the shoulder) it will either have a little triangle/arrow or the letters TWI showing you exactly where they are located in the tread!

      • The cops run their fingernails over the tyre to feel for a wear indicator and then feel if there is any depth to the indicator 'at any point across the tyre', if the wear markers are 'smooth' with the wear marker BANG unroadworthy!

Bought a couple. Particularly useful for motorbike tyres (harder to tell when to replace, because they tend to wear in all sorts of different patterns). Thanks OP!

average ozbargainer uses finger, anal ozbargainer uses one of these devices http://www.ridelust.com/wp-content/uploads/tread.jpg

    • +1

No-one should be allowed to use both 'finger' and 'anal' in the same comment :P

You know who should be buying these? The people selling second hand tyres on eBay!
The amount of times I've seen people listing them as having 50-70% tread and they've only got 2-3mm left at best!!!

    • like most things on fleabay, well overstated is the norm

  • +2

If you know where the tread depth indictors are maybe this tool isn't so useful, but if your tyre is some 'mid way' through wearing this might help you decide if the tyre is wearing evenly across the tyre.

Maybe it will help you predict when it will reach the legal 1.5mm limit and help you plan your budget around that or start looking more carefully. This little $2 tool doesn't have to save you much to pay its way :)
