This is a popular item in Ozbargain, so I don't think I need talk about it too much, loads of reviews online.

There are a lot of "Korean" 1440P monitors for sale at ebay for around $350 mark.

But for the better warranty. much better input option and base, arguably better picture quality, I would still prefer to pay more for this.

If you looking for a high quality dual-monitor solution, or you have a friend wish to have the same monitor and buy together, it works out as $522 per monitor which is lowest price ever! if my memory serves me right.

I just bought one for myself,now waiting for the delivery.

      The cheap Korean LCDS are actually using rejected panels from Dell or Apple. The rejected panels that do not pass quality testing are returned to Korea and local businesses there purchase and use these panels to make their own monitors.

      That also explains why the Korean monitors on ebay have tend to have a fairly loose dead pixel policy (e.g 5 dead pixels is still considered acceptable), because they use these 'recycled' panels.

        Dell and Apple don't make LCD panels… They both get them from Samsung and LG. It is true those Korean 1440p 27" monitors use the rejected batches. But bear in mind, a rejected batch constitutes of a handful of LCD's being tested from a very large amount, so chances that most of the "bad" batch are actually bad are very low. I've got a Korean monitor myself, and its bloody brilliant, not a single problem, so 27" 1440p with a Samsung IPS panel all for $300? YES PLEASE!

          I thought they were panels which were mostly rejected because they didn't meet Dell's (very strict) colour calibration standards, so they're still great, just don't have 'graphics designer level' colour reproduction.

          are you talking about PLS (samsung's modded IPS)? I don't like them, they have insane black crush… slightly more saturation but can't stand their blacks.

          I was very close to buy one of those

          However, I found if I want something with zero dead pixel+display port +HDMI input+better base, they will cost around $400 mark.

          So I figure, why not spend $100 more,get a decent brand with 3 year warranty plus consider the resell value too.

          The total owning price won't be that much a different if you factoring the resell value.

          Honestly PLS is my favorite LCD technology atm. Even though there is some black crush, PLS still achieves a much better contrast (darker black level) than other IPS technology, and the only other tech with darker blacks is MVA panels, which has even more crushed blacks than PVS. So basically PVS is the best all rounder imo, movies and games particularly benefit from the increased contrast.

          at ~$520 the dell is a no brainer.

          Only go korean if:
          - you want to OC to 100hz+ refresh rates
          - don't want osd or scalers to get the lowest possible response
          - you hate anti glare coatings (if the apple cinema display is out of your budget)

          The dell is gonna come calibrated out of the box, along with good support

          agree with you @ $520, you can't really be wrong for getting this, in 3 years time you can still probably sell it for say $220~$300 easily.

          and buy some no brand from ebay,even if it works perfectly after three years, the resell value will be much less, probably only around $120~$150.

          I have really life experience of trying to sell something not a internationally recognized brand product with similarly specs and perfect working condition at a much much lower price.

          What basically happened was that Dell/Apple ordered a batch of panels from LG and when the batch arrived, a sample was taken and from that, the amount of issues found in the batch determine the class of the panel. If the panels cannot be classed as A+ panels, they are rejected and sent back to LG who has to do something with them to break even.

          Some issues picked up include deal/ stuck pixels and panel defects like backlight bleed and colour associated problems.

          These panels where then sold locally to Korean companies who are interested and they design the stand, PCB and inputs for the monitor. Because they get these panels in so cheap, they are able to sell them at these prices, ship them expedited around the world, pay eBay/PayPal fees and still make profit.

          yep, only a small sample of each batch are tested, so odds are there are many perfectly fine A+ panels in any given "bad" batch. If your unlucky you may get a panel with a dead pixel or back light bleed, but most people that go with Korean monitors have a good success rate. Mine was perfect :)

          They're just noted as being Korean because that's where all the eBay sellers are located, which, in turn, is because that's where all the panels are manufactured. Since they're eBay sellers, selling (generally) an inherently less reliable product, they're regarded with some wariness. Most panels are made in Korea by Samsung and LG anyway, so it's not (well, shouldn't be) any kind of racism, if that's what you're asking.

          Dells HM series has lower colour range than the H series, so not comparable to Korean LG panel displays.

          What's your point? Yeah the HM isn't as good as the H in that regard, but it's still an LG panel and I never stated this specific panel was made in Korea.

    Great deal OP, agree that this is the best price seen on the retail site for this monitor. Single retail price is currently at $829, so this is a saving of $307 or 37%.

      It is a good deal. You should never pay retail for a Dell screen, they always discount. I got this screen for $580 two weeks back.

      It is nice, but not as good as the old Dell 2711. The colour gamut is not as good (99 vs 110%), and the number of inputs it will take is less. That said it weighs half what the 2711 weighs, and the stand pivots vertically.

      The most serious shortcoming of this screen is that you cannot run it at native resolution on HDMI, you'll need to do it via DVI.

        you really need a good graphic card to run game on this resolution and all good graphic card has DVI-D and Displayport which will support them perfectly.

        in terms of color gamut again, at 520, can't ask more.

    I'm still waiting for a 120Hz IPS monitors at an appropriate price. Will wait a while.

    Maybe I'll just take my plunge with an X-Star/QNIX and hope for 120Hz and minimal faults.

    Not saying your experience will be the same - because it's been a while, but there are a lot of people on whirlpool who got stuck in the faulty U2711 (not 13) chain where Dell would continuously send them repaired units - to the point where people were getting defective ones that other users had returned. My house mate was one of these people and I think those people would be reticent to deal with Dell again. Sure, they'd get a "new" monitor delivered to them, quick smart - but quite often it'd have other defects and you got the impression they were just passing lemons around, hoping for one of them to take.

      bought a dell laptop before, problem happened they have a thousand reasons to void the warranty responsibilities,

    Hi guys,

    I have a MacBook pro early 2013 edition. Should I buy this as a monitor (can it support 2 screens?, or only 1?) or should I wait for apple to release a new updated thunderbolt display?

    If I do select the first option, can someone tell me how to connect it to mac book pro? only has 1 HDMI slot.

    Will there be any display problems? Laptop runs at 2880x1800 whilst the maximum the dell monitor supports is 2560x1440.

    Any other pros / cons?

      This screen will not run at full resolution on a single HDMI, you need DVI.

        actually hdmi 1.3a will support upto 2560x1600, so a single HDMI will be fine

          My Mac Pro does not have a display port, only HDMI and thunderbolt. Where does it say that the Dell monitor supports thunderbolt? Apologies, but my question is that if I do buy this monitor, will my mac pro also run at a resolution of 2560x1440 or 2880x1800?

          Thunderbolt is DisplayPort. Or rather, mini DisplayPort, but it's the same thing for all intents and purposes. So all you'd need would be a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable, and the physical side of things is fine.

          On your other question, that's up to OSX to support, and I have no experience in that area. I'm sure googling around a bit will provide some idea.

          Guys, plz make sure that the cable you are buying complies with DisplayPort 1.2 standard or higher to get the 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) resolution. There are plenty of cables on ebay which are only 1.1 and with these you will only get 1920 x 1080 (FHD).

          I bought this to connect to my Thinkpad T430s laptop mini display port to Dell U2711 and get the 2560 x 1440 (WQHD) resolution. Works like a charm :-)

      I don't know if it would run two (anyone?), but I have my early 2011 macbook pro hooked up to my U2711 through thunderbolt>displayport, purchasd through Lenovo.

      Looking at building hackintosh post production workstation and 2*27" could be preferable to 30".

    A word of caution to anyone looking to buy a monitor with these specs, if you haven't used one before — The native resolution of 2560x1440 is nice for doing detailed CAD\modelling\graphics work, but the downside is that everything on screen will be smaller than on a standard resolution monitor — Unless you have 20:20 vision and a real need to cram more open windows onto your screen. This is not an ideal way to work as it will ultimately lead to more eye-strain.
    Of course, you can drop the resolution down, but the image quality will drop along with it, and you loose any benefits from buying an 'Ultrasharp' monitor.
