Help - Car towed (Sydney)

I parked in the bus lane today accidentally - absolutely absent-minded, I know. I deserve all penalties applicable for the inconvenience caused to road users.

Does anyone know who towed my car and who I can contact to get it back?

  • Well that sucks. I'd guess you'll receive something in the mail shortly on how you can retrieve it.

it was a guy called Doug.

    But seriously, ring the Council.

I like that you admitted your mistakes and still so cool about it. Some of the posts I have read in this forum where the OP strongly defends his 'crime' is a real shocker! Hope you get your car real soon.

  • Could the RTA/RMS help locate it? Or police?

Waiting for business hours might be a pain so I'd give the local police shop a call to ask for advice on where to go from here.

(note: I really have no idea, but I am curious what happens in situations like this!)

  • I would suggest calling the relevant authorities as soon as possible because the longer you wait, the more the towing company will charge you to release your car.

Happened to me a few years ago. From memory I think I called an RTA number and they let me know which towing company would have towed it. You will probably find the car will be nearby. In my case, they towed it around the corner and left it in the closest legal park.

If your car was towed, walk up upto the first corner that a Towie can turn left, then walk to the next corner and turn left again.

You should find your car there.

Towies notoriously tow it just around the block (ie 2 left turns) and drop it where its not a clear way.

Alternatively, you call the Police, and they tell you to call the local Towie who will also charge you a fee to tell you what I just said above!

      Serious? That's crazy. Sneaky buggers!

  • Plot twist, it was stolen. (Not really I don't know I just decided this thread needed a plot twist)

    • thats what I thought, maybe not towed but stolen…

  • Call 131444 and they should be able to suss it out. The RMS contracted mob have to report to somewhere IIRC…I got towed like that 13 years ago so my memory is a bit sketchy.

Thanks everyone, those who tried to help, or poke a little fun, that's all good.

    Update:

Called RMS, got redirected three times (talked to four persons), then the last guy I spoke to told me where the tow truck driver left my car. It was a street about 3KM away.

Here's an interesting plot twist if that's what you're looking for.

    I got three tickets:
One for parking on a bus lane
    One for the tow truck
One for parking longer than indicated

It turns out that the tow truck driver left my car at an area that is "1P". I fully understand and accept the bus lane parking ticket and tow truck demand for compensation, but not the ticket for parking longer than indicated.

Damn. Are you going to dispute the last one? You should be able to explain what happened. Bit unfair if they force you to pay for the towie's decision to park your car in a restricted zone again.

How much were each of those fines?

    • I think you can honestly claim you didn't park there.

  • Dammit! I did the same thing this morning. If parked in the bus zone out the front of my house with full intention of moving my car before 6am when it became bus lane again, only I slept in and by 730, it had been towed around the corner. I have moved it to a safe park now, but there was no ticket etc on my car. I will be expecting my fine in the mail I suppose…. But can you tell me roughly what your fine was or I should expect? I cant imagine being towed would be a cheap fine… Not the best way to start the day :(
