Carlton Cold Cans 20 Pack $19.99 @ Dan Murphy's

240

I was just at my local Dan Murphy's (Hervey Bay) to buy my supplies for the fortnight and they are selling Carlton Cold Cans 20 pack for $19.99. Which isn't a bad price considering a 24 stubby carton is about $38 and the cans are still 375ml. It is possibly only my local store as the best before date is 22/06/2014

  • Website says it's also $19.99 at my local store (Belconnen ACT).

  • Also ~$20 at Bull Creek, WA. Are these decent?

      No.

Trying to resist urge to reply NOT A BARGAIN. Each to their own. If you LIKE Carlton Cold, by all means, snap some up. If you've never tried it, buy one first, not 24. It's not a bargain to spend $19.99 on one can, decide you don't like it, and have 23 more to give away / throw away. The only possible use for these is to take them to parties and drink someone else's nicer beer. That might be an ozbargainy thing to do, but it's not cool.

Yeah it was OK a few years ago before they started messing with it. But now they have reduced it down to 3.5%

Why is is cheap?. Because its almost reached its best before date.

Why has it reached its best before date?. Because its crap and overpriced.

        • what other decent beer is $1 per can?

        • +3

          "Because its crap and overpriced."

That describes pretty much all Australian mainstream beer.

If you're on Centrelink benefits, drive a VS Commodore and have a mullet - Yes.

      • +8

Guess that counts me out…I don't drive a Commodore

        • +1

Do you drive an XD Falcon ?

      They're fine.

They're not complicated and they taste pretty watery but they're fine.

      • +3

they were fine when they were full-strength….. because their only purpose in the market was to get you drunk cheaply

now that they are middies, no point to them

        • +1

OK, I had no idea that had happened. Haven't tried the mid-strength version. I imagine they're even more watery.

    • Not made from beer like Carlton Draught is.

      It's not VB so that's a plus.

      • Vb shits on the Carlton cold. I drink just about every beer on the planet, but I can:t do Carlton cold unless I have had 5 of something else and I am at least half cut, even then it's still not that good.

This is ok if you are having a party and want to cheapskate on the people who are in for the long haul.

  • Good post, OP, thanks.

Always good to have a bunch of cheap mids to offer out as unlimited freebies at parties you host. There's always a few people that didn't bring enough drinks of their own or a few people that have probably had too much to drink and need to sober up a bit on some water-beer, haha. Cheers, will pick some packs up.

They are no longer Carlton cold, they are Fosters cold. If you read the label on the actual can.

    • I don't know, the print on the can says Carlton Cold when I look at it?

  • +1

Its a low-alcohol beer. Cheaper to buy VB and add water :-)

  • +2

Geez, glad I read the thread - I havent had them for about 20 years but at that price I was up for some but not at 3.5%

  • +1

It has thermo chromic ink, worth it just for that!

  • Mid strength

  • I'd drink XXXX Gold from time to time and quite like it. The Carlton Colds though, even for a mid, are just terrible. I will drink almost all beers but most of the block of cans I bought before have turned into dust bnnies in the back of my beer cupboard….

  • If you don't have a Dan's nearby, BWS has it for 2 for $40, although then you'd be buying 2 cases.. of Carlton Cold…

  • not bad once you add some vodka and raspberry cordial on a hot day!

  • Only beers I won't drink again are anything pre brewed by mountain goat. (have heard their microbrewery is good) and cobra beer, too flat and weak for me

  • +1

I loved this beer when it was 4.9% alcohol. Then they messed it like VB and it now tastes like shit!

  • +1

The only thing worse than this is when they used to sell it in the PET bottle. That stuff was horrendous.

  • Not the way it used to be - not a fan.
