@competitions — I understand that you are trying to lead traffic from OzBargain to your own forums but I think what you have done over the last couple of days is quite excessive.

As of spending $300 at IGA to get 40c/litre off — the same grocery probably costs $200 or less at Aldi so you do the maths…

      Agree with scotty wholeheartedly!

    • +2

I agree, I shop at IGA sometimes, but there is no way I could even spend $100 worth of groceries without buying things that were available and also cheaper at a place like ALDI but even wooloworths/coles

  • +3

    Haha, IGA too?

  • +3

I still think it's a bargain worth sharing. People want to know. Let them decide whether they want to use it. After all, this site is about informing not persuading isn't it?

    • +5

No one is arguing that this deal is worthy of making it to the front page. But don't also try to promote your own site while you're at it.

      • +4

A site that costs $44/year to access no less. I think if this user chooses to post bargains in their own right then that's fine. Using this site just to try and suck people in to subscribe to his over priced forums should result in a ban.

I think itsross and elguapo are both right - added positives to counter the negatives someone has added.

        • +2

          exactly.

  • Frankly $300 to get a discount is discrimination against single people and those on social security who would would never buy that much.

I get really annoyed with this sort of thing, like all the '2 for' deals. I can't use one whole loaf of bread, let alone two.

    • -1

Those airline ones that are two travel for the price of one annoy me when there is 3 or 5 in the family!

    • +2

There are also health implications in enticing people to buy, e.g. 3 boxes of icecreams at once…
(or, as I've just seen, 3 pizzas)

    • +2

You better not try and shop at Costco then when it opens.

  • it is kind of sad to see that the more 'community-based' grocer like IGA is just ending up with a 'follower' not market innovator. If you can afford, just do it first before Woolwth/Coles do.

Also I have been constantly dissapointed at their price standard in my local IGA (Newtown 2042), every single product sold here seems to be more expensive than even Coles/Wlwth stores in CBD.
As a result, I tend to shop almost all grocery shopping at Coles/Wlwth in CBD rather than a few minuites away local IGA shop. - even for a milk!

I may sound harsh but I really wish they go down and taken over by ALDI or even Woolworth (I knew the takeover proposal by Wlwth was rejected by ACCC, but now I want to write my opinion to them). There seems not much benefit that IGA can bring to their customers in the neighbour. I am sure At least ALDI or even Woolworth can do.

Or better senario is simply ALDI or any new market commer in the future (Walmart like?) buy IGA franchise and take over all IGA shops in OZ.

So what you want is less competition- how stupid.

      • It might be better overall competition if Aldi owned IGA outlets, as I said in another post, it is hard to get any kind of value at IGA — you get the odd items of value, but it is not worth visiting their stores normally.

        • +2

          any competition is good competition.

  • +3

It all seems rather reactive to me.

But as with all these sorts of offers, it comes down to a question of whether the qualifying condition (spend $300) can be incurred sensibly AND whether the 'saving' is worthwhile.

If you don't drive a car, it'll never be worthwhile (nor will buying bulk nappies be a bargain to ME given that all my kids are older). Horses for courses!

I DO like the fact that IGA often have interesting/different product lines. I DON'T like that some of their products are pretty expensive compared with the competition. I COULD probably spend $300 there in a sensible fashion.

On the other side of the equation, the saving is limited to $0.40 x 80 litres.

I drive a 'tank' (well, Toyota Prado) that takes a fill of 150 litres. SO for me, the better saving can be obtained by sensibly shopping at Woolworths or Coles (last week) and filling my 150 litre capacity on a TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY saving $60 (or $66 if I buy $5 worth of 'cr*p' from the overpriced lolly selection at the checkout and get an extra $0.04 x 150 litre discount).

This represents close to a 20% discount on groceries that I would still buy - but over a longer period. I do need to buy petrol (that is a given). AND I have the capacity to be able to afford to spend that much in one go. So, I think it is a pretty rational decision for me!

PS. Anyone want to buy a share of 151 packs of Barilla dried pasta? :-)

    • Usually milk and/or bread helps with the in shop spending. But Woollies normally charges way too much extra for milk, so spending $5 there is much harder. WW started to have $5 for 2x 2L milks and that was okay, but it's stopped already (from what I've been told). Now Coles Express has (or possibly had) $5 for 2x 2L. There is competition b/w these two at least even if it is a duopoly on the whole. Before hand Coles Express had 2x 2L at $5.50 which was fairer than WW pricing at the pump outlets.

      • I normally buy the multi-deals on powerade / V to try and make up the $5, if they dont have any on I don't bother. But sometimes the deals on V/Powerade is very comparable to what they are separately in Coles so it's worth me picking up given I drink both of them.

"At IGA, we’re all about being independent."

    Aw, c'mon!
    You can not be serious!

Define what you mean by being "independent"

Independence in thought or deed is not evident here.

Rather, IGA are playing the "me too" game of the majors.

What do I get instead if I don't want petrol? Am I paying more for my groceries or cross-subsidising those who do want to play this mad game.

Coles, Woolworths and IGA, helping you save when you want to burn a larger hole in the Ozone layer.

It is rare to find value at IGA, much harder than with Aldi, WW or Coles/BiLo by a long way.

I've just discovered that as an ACS member, I am actually entitled to buy the gift cards from Ambassador and get 5% off (or 4% if paying by credit card).

The one store that I dreaded being taken over was Franklins, they at least offered a "third" choice when they existed. Woolworths swallowed them up, now we basically have Coles / Woolworths. BiLo was somewhat independent of Coles, despite the ownership, but they are now far too closely aligned with Coles to be able to differentiate the two… although sometimes some things are still cheaper at BiLo than around the corner at Coles at the same shopping centre.

I wish that IGA was a competitive option, but unfortunately they are clearly not at all competitive.

  • IGA Still sell Dr Pepper?

  • I hate shopping at IGA.
It takes at least 10-15% longer than shopping at Coles, because you are constantly checking the "Use By" dates.
IGA sure treat locals like crap.

Still might be good value for those that want to combine their shopping with friends and bring a jerry can or something to the pump :P

  • So, what if you spent $300 last week at coles/woolies, got 44c off at the bowser because you bought some 2 for 1 milk and a newspaper in the servo, and then took that petrol docket to IGA this week…are you saving up to 84c a litre on petrol for that one tank?

    • If you spend $605 a fortnight on groceries, you deserve to have you petrol for 35c a litre :P

      • Hmm, that's only 2,736 tim tams (assuming they were on special for $2 a pack, and 9 to a pack)…TOTALLY WORTH IT!
