MacBook Air 11.6" (Mid 2013) 1.3GHz $899 from DSE

90

A great price on the outgoing Macbook Air models - only $10 more than the Apple refurbished price.

There's also the 13" model for $999

I pricematched this deal at JB HiFi with no proof, as well as an AppleCare for $199 - down from RRP $279.

They were probably too busy laughing that you bought apple care to worry about the price matching.

    • dont own a mac yet, so was just reading what apple care was. Sounds to me just like having genius bar on the phone.

      • The AppleCare Protection Plan provides global repair coverage, both parts and labor, from Apple-authorized technicians around the world.

    • Why the Apple Care hate?

      • lots of people like to hate. apple care is good idea if u want your mac fix for free.

        Because extended/enhanced warranties are bullshit.

You just paid almost 25% of the cost of the laptop on a warranty, and all goods come with warranties anyway.

        • Yep - free -https://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

        • All goods come with a one year warranty - I now have 4 years of guaranteed use of the laptop.

Having used warranty repair from Lenovo (where the laptop is picked up and repaired onsite) I'd thought Apple Care would also be worthwhile given the worldwide repair network.

Exactly. You just paid for something you're entitled too as a consumer for free. You paid a premium for a high end laptop. Accepting that it would only last 12 months is wrong. Even a crappy Laser tablet from BigW comes with a 12 month warranty.

        • Accepting that it would only last 12 months is wrong.

Okay, I understand where you're coming from.

There's a 30-day refund policy on AppleCare, I may take advantage of that.

        • there are a lot of things that are not covered, like dropping it…

        • I got my screen replaced and it had a drop dent in the corner. My cam was a bit funny and I think the drop officially killed it. Probably just got lucky.

        • or facing north and typing on it…

      • Under Australian Consumer Law, the vendor is supposed to provide warranty support for the realistic lifetime of the product. However (and I'm prepared to be corrected on this), its on their (undocumented) terms.

All a "sold" extra warranty (ie Applecare, extended warranty etc) does is stipulate the terms for the stated period. In Apple's case, this means the service level experienced in your local Apple store, telephone service, advance exchange (on some items), all with no quibble, argument or persuasion on your part.

For your peace of mind, reduced hassle etc, its probably worth your $200. If you were prepared to be a more "assertive" customer, you may well be able to match the terms of Applecare without buying it.

        • Under Australian Consumer Law , that is hilarious-
yeah, and under Australian tax law Apple [ays the right amount of tax for all the revenue they earn from Apple store consumers in Australia.

Firstly, I've invoked several so called "extended warranties" and not had any of them actually meet their terms and conditions. That includes the ones from Harvey Norman, the Good Guys (the worst I've ever seen) and NAB, all have landed in dispute process or direct to consumer affairs to be resolved as "statutory" warranty issues. So extended warranties are B$SH%T.

Secondly, the more we as consumers get sucked into this idea of paying for someone to do what we already are entitled to the harder it is for ALL of us to push back on retailers/manufacturers to actually honor the consumer code because they play the game well as not only do the make a big profit on extended warranties they use it as an excuse to push back (confuse people) on statutory rights.

Thirdly, Mac's are pretty reasonably built things not like your average laptop.. better off with a portable cover under a general contents policy at least covers you for a more realistic event like theft or accidental damage.

Or save the cash for your next purchase, laptops get dated very quickly.

  • I can see the price as $279 in DSE website.

The 13" model can be had for $999.

    • +1

Yeah I reckon thats the best model to go for. The extra screen real estate and the well sized keyboard is definitely worth the extra $100.

      • Keys are exact same for 11 and 13 inch (unless talking about Palm rest real estate).
13 inch also has 12hr battery, vs 9hrs in 11 inch. But yeah probably worth extra $100.

  • Any idea if the refurb models will clear soon? Retina mpb's have an extra discount ATM.

  • I paid around $980 for the new 11.6" 1.4ghz around 5 weeks ago from Apple. Not sure why you'd want the older model when it comes to selling / upgrading, the 14 will make sense for <$10 % more).

Had numerous Apple Macs and laptops over 20 years, they are extremely well made, never had Apple Care, my CC also gives me one extra year. Like many upgrade about each 3 years anyway and never had one bit of Apple gear requiring service or repair, found no need for it. Currently in our house with all of 2 adults, have 2 x 27" iMacs, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and 2 ATV's guess one could say we like them!.
