Checked and found them on Ebay for $38 with free delivery.

These Halogen bulbs would be the safe option however for anyone keen to experiment and as long as you have the extra space out the back of the bulb for the heatsink & fan then these 50W Cree LED H4 Replacements may also be worth a shot: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251554…

$63 inc Postage from China. A mate has some locally sourced (& locally priced) versions of these and they're really pretty amazing for inexpensive drop-in LED upgrades. There are others around without the fan and with slightly larger heatsinks but they're a bit more expensive. I've been contemplating them for a while but as per anything LED I'm sure they'll run cooler and even brighter within 6-12 months so I'll wait until then.

May not be enough room to fit these in a bike headlight bucket tho.

    • From memory retrofitted LED headlights are currently illegal in NSW without proper housing. Can anyone confirm (or deny) this?

      • Yeah, I'd be keen to hear about this too as they may not suffer from the HID 'dazzle' which was apparently the reason they weren't allowed to be retrofitted. HIDs required a proper focussed, self-levelling lenses and water washers etc. so maybe LEDs dont?!

Ahh, just found this via DOT/RACQ:

"there are also aftermarket LED conversions available that use an LED bulb in the vehicle's original headlight assembly. We are not aware of any of these having been tested and certified as meeting the requirements of ADR46. Without this certification they are not acceptable for on-road use"

Oh well, Halogens it will (still) have to be then :(

        • If they are indeed legal, and provide adequate light for 'town driving' i would love to get a set. Got spotlights for country roads! Just did a little googling, didnt find much. Not keen to delve through the compliance documents…maybe one day..

EDIT: Shall be on the lookout for ADR46 certified LED's…
I was actually curious if there was any insanely bright H3 LED bulb replacements to replace the spotlights, but right now i cant justify the outlay..would rather keep halogen and buy a nice shiny LED bar in the future..

          +1 for the LED bar!

Got a 20" 12000 Lumen LED bar on my car instead of spotlights. It produces a really nice, fat blob of pure white light about 50-100m wide and 300m down the road which is perfect for the dark highway driving I do. I don't need Lightforce HIDs to see roadsigns reflect 1.5km away, I need to see the animals about to jump out from the bushes and run/hop in front of the car. The other benefit of an LED bar is that you can tuck them into grille openings etc. making them easier to install and a lot less obvious than two massive spotties.

        • Yeah one of my halogen globes in my spotlights died the other day. Driving ~3000km over the next few weeks, really should pick up a new globe for that. As a fellow ozbargainer, always after a good deal, would you mind linking to what bar you got? So many price differences out there, and i know some of the cheaper ones are rubbish, so im curious. My spotlights are from the time LED bar's were only just coming out, so mega expensive, beyond a poor uni students budget….

          Here's mine: http://www.monsterlights.com.au/ml100ss.htm

Interestingly it's rated at 10000 Lumens so maybe mine is only 10000 afterall. Either way it's incredible BUT it's also about 2-3 times as expensive as the typical ones you see everywhere because it was the only bar I could find that fit perfectly in a section of the lower grille without hacking it up to make it fit and that was very important to me. The bar itself was $500 about 12 months ago but I didn't mind because comparing that to a couple of small Lightforce spotties with HID upgrades I'm still way in front :)

I'd be keen to compare it to the $100 120W generics found on eBay tho. From what I've seen I'd say they'd be just as good TBH.

        • Hmm i dont mind so much about size wise as it will be mounted on a bullbar already present. One day…one day… Thanks for the help!

HID H4 bulbs including slim ballasts can be bought on ebay as cheap as $20. I've had mine on the bike for over 6 years now, just make sure to choose a colour temperature that's road legal.

    • As long as you don't attract attention you should be OK however understand that if you were pulled over for an inspection I doubt the HID will pass without the focusing lens, the auto-levelling and the water sprayer.

all of the HID kits in Halogen housings just scatter the light in the wrong way blinding people and you often end up with a very narrow beam

  • How are the Narva globes compared to the Philips brand? In particular in comparing them to the Philips X-treme Vision globes, which are usually ~$50 a set off Ebay?

    • My philips lasted me 4 years, Narva 2 yrs… So if you do the maths $ per year philips seems better.

      • What Philips bulbs did you get?

  • +1

Repco should order them in for you if they are on sale, and they will usually arrive the next day rather than waiting for someone on eBay to send them.

  • I have been using the Narva Plus 50s for a few years. Don't think they last anywhere near as long as whatever I used to use. Lucky to last nine months. I've been careful with handling and hopefully nothing wrong with headlamp cluster sealing. Just became second nature to stock up when the Repco deals came around…

    • I've used them more recently too…..and also found that their overall lifespan is short.
I've had a pair in my car now for maybe 6-7 months and one of them is starting to dim in comparison to the other. After the last 2 sets Narvas that I've used…I think that I'm going to try the Philips bulbs next.

    • The lifespan figures B3 and Tc area guide. High performance lamps have about 1/3 of the life of a normal bulb. Usually hard to find, probably for good reason. A couple of examples here and here. B3 (the point at which 3% of a test batch has failed) and Tc (the point at which 63.2% of a test batch has failed).

      • A third!

Have been considering reverting back to "normal" bulbs, but kept finding bulbs I previously bought and put aside. :)
