  • Thanks OP, good find.

It just redeems as 'promotional credit' so I guess you can use it for any purchase (apps, etc?)

    • That's my understanding. I haven't done it yet - waiting till I go home.

      • The screengrab in that article says it's for a movie rental.

And I bought mine from JBHiFi for the same money and don't qualify. =-[

        • Yes you do it clearly tates in the article which stores which including jb
i bought mine from jb and just claimed my $6

    Thank you very much..OP..!!!

    Just redeemed. Thx! :)

"Enjoy your first movie on us with a $6 credit"

  • +1

    Thank you :)

  • So do you guys find this device useful? Can you get Netflix and Hulu?

    • i want to know too.. how is the browser? does most of the website work? what about videos from various websites.. i stream most of my stuff from online sites.. would this be useful?

      • +5

There's no browser in the Chromecast - maybe read up on what it is and what it does.

        A good start:
        http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/computers/gadgets-on-the-…

      • Yup..

I can think of a good bedroom set-up using a hanging TV on a wall and a chrome cast so you can basically play those videos from the web using chrome browser (PC)

    • +5

Hey, we did a guide on how to get Netflix through Chromecast in Australia http://ausdroid.net/howto/chromecast-coming-heres-can-get-ne…

      • Nice guide, if you have ddwrt on your router is there any way to use iptables to drop only traffic from the chromecast pointing to Google DNS? I use the Google DNS on my computer and doing your method would prevent me from using it too :(

        • +2

Enter in these rules and you should be right:
          iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 8.8.8.8 -j DNAT —to-destination 185.37.37.37
          iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 8.8.4.4 -j DNAT —to-destination 185.37.37.185

        • +3

No need for IPTABLES, just create a Virtual Server rule to redirect Google DNS to your unblocker DNS..

        • It was a bit of humour, I'm a geek myself. I'm the 'go to' guy for anything 'tech' it seems. I absolutely hate the 'why isn't it working' when the answer you give them they won't understand anyway… either educate yourself or just let me fix it. Would make my job easier!

    • +3

I find mine very useful, been using it to stream the hockey world cup live from the FIH YouTube channel!

      • It would've been useful during the IPL cricket.

Chromecast is OK, but if you can grab an Android TV Stick like the MK808 at Geekbuying you can get all the Chromecast functionality (with the Cheapcast app) plus real apps for less money!

      • +1

It's a garbage experience the MK808 and all the AndroidTV on a stick experiences. Just awful. There's a reason Google has never advocated for their use and came up with the Chromecast.

        • Suit yourself..
I have both a $35 Chromecast (bought by a mate when he was in the US) and MK808b Android Stick with Air Mouse is superior in every respect apart from boot time, it's slower by a few seconds..
The fact you can (potentially) buy an MK808 from the Geekbuying sale for $13 delivered compared to $50 + delivery for a CHromecast makes it a no brainer to me!
The MK808 can just be used as a Chromecast device if you don't want the extra functionality and you can buy 3 of them for the same price of one AUS Chromecast!

        • do you have link for MK808 ? The only one i can see on geekbuying website is 48$

        • I just bought a super dooper zooper MK902 for $85 to the door with 16GB on-board storage :) Should fly compared to the chromecast

        • +2

The $13.99 price starts in 1.5 hours.
          As per this post

        • does it come with memory card and does it work well with 1080

        • -1

It's capable of 1080p with a (complicated) Firmware flash, but I found it a bit buggy and unreliable..

        • Im going to buy this one. So this one doesnt come with latest firmware? Can i mirror my pc to this one ?

        • +1

Cheapcast app emulates all the functionality of Chromecast.

        • LOL IM SLOW it is sold out :(

        • +1

          Sold out immediately

  • Any good if you already have a Smart TV?

    • +4

My SmartTV 2012 Panasonic is so slow as to be virtually unusable..
Probably depends on your TV and what apps are available.

    • I have a Sony smart tv kdl 70. And i find the smart part so slow. Chromecast so much better for youtube searching and easily casts your screen from a pc or android chrome browser. Only problem,is i cant seem to cast avi files through file explorer. Can anyone tell me if it is possible?

      • +1

Look into videostream app for chrome. You'll need to start it up from your computer first. There's a free andriod remote, but this only allows you pause/play/rewind/fastfoward and NOT select the file. Not all codecs and subtitles are support

Also look into Plex. Install Plex onto the computer with your media files. You can get the andriod app for ~$5.50 which lets you select which files to play from your andriod phone.

I found both of the apps can have issues reading some files, but plex seems a little better and better UI.

        • +1

I wouldn't recommend videostream, it is usable and best of all free, i had some stutters with MKV files.

However, playing the same MKV file via PLEX was nice and smooth.

btw, if you sign into plex.tv webapp on chrome with the google cast addon, plex is essentially free as you don't even need the android app to cast from server to chromecast. Only downside with this method is you need to be at a tv.

        • Thanks will give it a go.
is there anyway if using xbmc with chromecast?

  • +3

Had no idea but I'm totally eligible. Cheers OP, I absolutely love this thing.

  • +14

May be use the credit for a Plex app (US$ 5.52)…

    • exactly what i am going to use mine for =)

    • AU$5.52 (also?)

  • There are whole eBooks on Google Chromecast… FWIW, one of which was offered Free - a while ago - to Kindle users.

  • PS How do you get the $6.00 credit…? I've been sent on a wild goose chase for it… with no geese in sight. :-/

  • For some reason whenever I click the link it says "Device missing" despite the fact I can cast my tabs, cast Netflix, use plex etc. Everything is working but not the offer page for some reason.

  • where's the cheapest place right now to buy a Chromecast?

    • +1

DWI by $2 not including shipping…

Though your best bet is JB HiFi for $49 since it's guaranteed local stock and it shouldn't need to be shipped to you since JB is everywhere now a days…

      • +1

You can walk into David Jones too.

  • Thanks just received mine last night great gadget to play with so far.

  • The credit isn't specific for movies or TV, it's general Google Play credit and can be used for anything sold there. Just in case someone doesn't notice.
P.S. Good spotting OP. Thank you.

  • I'm probably missing something but is there any point of getting one if I have a ps3? Apart browser mirroring and casting from phone, both of which I don't have a great use for. What else can I do with it?

    • Not really

    • For people with PS3, probably not useful. The device is probably more for people like me, someone without a PS3 or XBox360 or better, and my TV does not have Android TV casting type capability (old TV basically).

  • +1

Doesn't work for my US bought Chromecast.. :-(

Edit: I removed my Getflix settings just to check that wasn't buggering things up and I appear to be able to stream Netflix without needing the re-routing trick for Google DNS.
Restarted both Modem and Chromecast, still able to Stream Netflix with just Getflix DNS in the router (no Google DNS Rules)!

    • That sounds awesome! Makes it a bit easier to setup for new users. I'm gonna test and confirm tomorrow.

  • Perfect! I just bought my chromecaat yesterday, so credit will be handy

  • Looks like I have the US Chromecast, so no go. :(

    "Uhoh, something unexpected happened

Refresh the page and try again"

  • awesome just redeemed it for the device I bought at DickSmith

  • +1

    Excellent thanks for this .
Also If you dont mind doing a survey once a week or so to gain play store cash,
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.and…

I've been doing this since it came out and have about $8 bucks in playstore credit.

    • Press random buttons for maximum money and maximum privacy.

  • Chromecast looks tempting, but not sure I need it? My panasonic smart tv is slow, i agree, but i've got my ps3 hooked up to it.
Do I really need chromecast? persuade me ozb…

    • +1

      Sungguh terlalu…

      • lol just realised that

    • Chromecast has completely different (useable) functionality to a PS3! Have both and use my Chromecast for things that I would have previously unplugged my ps3 and plugged in my laptop for.
More and more functionality is coming to Chromecast so it will always be getting better. The PS3? Well there is now a PS4..

      Impulse purchase away

    • +1

Don't need it.. Anything the Chromecast can do, PS3 can do provided you have your home network set up properly so you PS3 can see all your files..

      • Thanks everyone for your input. Might hold off on this one. I have PS3 set up for streaming files from media server to watch my movies. Finally got it to work reasonably well with wireless. still lags a bit sometimes though.
Now if Chromecast could do that, I would have picked it up in a heartbeat. Need something for the secondary 'non-smart' tv.

        • Streams 1080p over wireless instantly and without issue. For $50 I'm sure you can find a use for it.

        • +1

I just got mine to work properly, but chromecast + plex basically allows you to stream any media (that's in the server) at any tv within your home.

chromecast would also work really well with smart tvs since some smart tv lag when you try to pick an app to use.

        • ok now this is intriguing…. never used plex before, but how does it work with chromecast?
Can i use it to stream stuff? using UMS at the moment but happy to switch if something else is better.

          Reconsidering decision not to buy.

        • +1

Sorry i took so long to reply mate.

Basically install the PLEX media server, do your firewall setups and you're ready to go.

There are two ways of then choosing what to cast to your TV.

          1) Use chrome,
          - Install google cast
          - Log into the plex.tv webapp from chrome
          - Choose "cast to" and directed to your chromecast
          - Enjoy

          2) Get android app,
          - Choose "cast to" and directed to your chromecast
          - Enjoy

That's how i do it anyway… could be other ways.

          Hope that helped mate!

P.S. Just an added bonus to tempt you into buying it lol, chromecast is more portable compared to the PS3 lol

        • thanks thanks!

  • +1

Thanks OP! Got mine, and love my Chromecast!

All I can say is, Chromecast + Web Video Caster!

  • I like mine, youtube watching is a gem, queue your viewing and watch continuous Youtube. Playing rental movies (content) from play store is faultless. DId I mention youtube being excellent with a chromecast?
Allcast App will play files off your device. What more do you want?
More development all the time to meet this device.
Having got my first from Amazon a few months ago & I'm getting my second one very soon for tele in the bedroom. Easy to move around from TV to TV but having attached to HDMI on each TV would be the way to go.

  • I got mine from JB about a week ago. Using it for Youtube, Netflix, Hulu+, iPlayer & Plex - all working flawlessly after setting up the static route on the router with Getflix. $6 Play Store credit is a huge bonus!

About to give Web Video Caster a go as suggested by levitize.

  • Thanks - I needed that extra nudge to get one. This was it!

  • Interested, but not sure what advantages it has over my current setup. I have a "semi smart"TV hard wired to my wireless router, so it's already part of my wireless network… I can use imediashare currently via my android devices to play Youtube and a host of other channels.

Can anyone tell me whether chromecast will add anything more to my current setup?

    • Netflix with a bit of hackery..

  • prefer not to mess around with my wireless setup…. have had too many occasions where I've been left without wifi!

How does google play movies compare with netflix?

  • anyone with more than one chromecast? is it one $6 per customer or per device?

    • if you have more than one chromecast you can claim each $6 to the same google account

  • sweet, been enjoying my chromecast and while it is a nice token gesture, I will most likely never spend that $6.

hadn't bothered looking at the Google Play store before… $5.99 for movies, really? are they serious?

I'm sure that big network of bricks and mortar stores they have to distribute new release movies must be expensive to keep running, ohhhh wait, they're basically doing nothing? and distributing bulk GB costs them practically nothing? and a new release movie you have no tangible relation to still costs $5.99. SEEMS LEGIT!

    laughable.

charge $1, see profits explode and a large chunk of piracy disappear. why can't these greedy idiots get it right?

    • +2

You can buy apps as well..
Plex for example or AllCast which you can use with your Chromecast..

      • i know how to use the chromecast. i'm just laughing at the fact that the legit way to pay for things is beyond a rip-ff.

        • I'm guessing that price structure was lifted straight from the good old days of Video store rental prices..
Failing to take into consideration that they never made all the money that a video rental cost and that they're trying to sell 10 year's ago pricing to an audience that barely recognises a DVD let alone a Video!

  • Worked for me!

  • Has ppl received their chromecast yet?
