AKG Q701 - Highly Rated Headphones - Massdrop - $162.98 USD Delivered!

670

Hi Guys,

Just noticed Massdrop has a drop going for the AKG Q701s!!

At 162.98 USD delivered, it is an AMAZING price.
Amazon has them for 192-195 USD + p/h depending on the colour and eBay/staticice starts at 299/265 AUD + p/h respectively so it smashes those too!

There have already been 190+ purchases in just the FIRST day of the drop! That shows just how popular these little babies are!

Here are some reviews for the item:

Here are also some specs:

You get a choice between Lime Green, White and Black.
Plus, Quincy Jones Beats Dr. Dre anyday of the week! Pun intended.

Please note that these are the manufactured in China ones as they're straight from AKG. You can't really get the Austrian made ones anymore from what I understand. At least not new.

Also, you'll be wanting to get a decent headphone amplifier for these. Although they are rated at 62 ohms impedance, they are notoriously a bit more difficult to drive and something like the Little Dot MKIII or a Matrix M-Stage would work really well with them. The Asus Xonar ST/STX cards aren't too bad with them either but a dedicated headphone amplifier is better! It also doesn't hurt to have a good DAC instead of the normal headphone ports from onboard soundcards/MBPs and such.

Enjoy and let me know how you guys go!!!!

Edit. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/akg-q701-audiophile-headphones?… - is the link to view it without signing up with Massdrop. Thanks 32768.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEweybAb5ZY just for the hell of it.

Oh and I forgot to mention that these headphones are known to require a significant amount of break-in time (100 hours +) to really get its true signature. Never believed in breaking in until I had to do it for a similar set in the K712s.

        • I prefer the DAC on the O2 combo and the amp on the Matrix combo. GO figure.

        • pretty much my experience. Had the E9/E7 and the dock broke. Still usable, just less elegant.

For people wanting to play through a laptop/PC it's worth considering a cheap, preowned USB audio card for a DAC, and then using the true line out to an amp.

  • Thanks mthucs I'll be grabbing a pair.

Quick question for those buying black or white?

    • But, if you're thinkin' about my baby
It don't matter if you're black or white!

    • Neither, just get the green to be difference.

    • White. I liked the green but thought it probably wont age well, and the black looks pretty generic.

  • How big are the ear cups (or whatever you call them :X)

I currently have the dt880pro's but my ears are (apparently) huge and get squished and very uncomfortable in them .. don't want this to happen to these as well if i shell out for them.. they LOOK big, but so did the dt880's when i was going to buy them online too.. they look to be the same circle shape…

  • Worth an upgrade from AD700s or HD558s?

    • In one short word.

      Yes.

This is also a great set of phones. I owned a pair and they are pretty detailed and reasonably easy to drive. Have a detailed, neutral sound signature, a semi-open design, and are relatively easy to drive.

When Head-Fi first got wind of these they were regarded as 'giant killers'. A good choice for those strapped for cash.

No shipping to Australia though. :(

      • Ah sorry, not really familiar with that website.

  • Never used Massdrop before, so am I understanding this right: the price could potentially get even lower, if more people purchase these?

Either way, good deal, I jumped on it.

    • It's already at its lowest point for this item. If you go to the buy page, each item has a one or more little dots along this green/grey bar. As it reaches a certain threshold (bump), the price drops.

      • Ah yeah, I see it now. Thanks

Only thing putting me off of these is the reviews featuring the con of the leather band bumps feeling uncomfortable.

Anyone know whether they fixed this / whether this is a real issue? I'm currently using AD 700's and would like to upgrade, but I value their comfy-ness over an audio upgrade.

    • Only thing you can do is try it out mate. Not everyone is bothered by it. Plus, even if you are, I'm sure you can resell it without much of a loss.

Great amp to go with it. I'm using it with mine and it just sounds amazing as an intro amp.

"Back to the M-Stage, I do think that at the price they’re selling this, the amplifier is probably the best entry-level amplifier I’ve ever encountered. " - Headfonia.

Just keep in mind that they've only listed the 120V for some reason although the description says both should be available. I posted asking for the 240V option so hopefully that'll come soon.

    Enjoy!

    • Woops. Actually, this is the new Matrix. It could be dual voltage already. Not sure.

  • Still searching for a AMP/DAC combo :)

I did run into a very interesting blog about the story behind the O2.

Some light reading for those with time to burn.

  • Massdrop cant seriously cater for more than 1000 orders?

    • Lol.

      Let's see what happens.

    • The Monoprice 8320 drop had 1800+ orders. They handled that OK.

  • Opinions on using an Aune T1 with these headphones?

Looking for a decent DAC/Amp combo without breaking the bank..

  • Like I needed another pair of headphones… now to wait for a good deal on the O2+ODAC Combo….
    :D

there are some good deals on the aune and matrix m stage on ebay with the 15% off coupon deal

  • Matrix M-Stage is well known to work very well with these headphones.

    • Just grabbed the M-Stage with the eBay steal. Thanks for your valuable posts throughout this deal

      • No worries mate.

Roll some of those Op-Amps for that extra bit of sound.

        OPA627
        MUSES01
        LME49990
        LM4562

are some of the ones I have used.

        • which one is good for jazz and classical? thanks in advance!

  • Any <$150 amp recommendations? :P

    • +1

schiit magni but costs a tiny bit more than 150

      • Can only find it for $100 on Amazon and they don't ship to AU.

    • JDS Objective2 seems to be the best but some say that it's too revealing to use with these phones.
I was going to wait for the Aune T1 to come up on massdrop or get a Little Dot tube amp for a bit more warmth and bass.

  • Those who missed the deal, Amazon is going to have a sale
    http://puu.sh/9M8OX.jpg
Doesn't say what it will drop to (currently at 194.99 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004444O3W/)

    • Starts at 11pm AEST

      • green and white at 159.99pp

  • Anyone got theirs yet?

    • I haven't received mine yet, it was shipped on July 10th according to Massdrop records.

    • Nothing yet, pity we can't track them at all.

    • They should be here this week based on previous Massdrop purchases.

    • +1

Got mine today, love them already.

      • +1

Me too, had them for 5 mins, worth every penny :)

      • +1

Got mine today.. plugged into the DAC/AMP off my Receiver and they sound amazing…

Very comfy, could wear all day easily.

Time to get a desktop amp

  • Great headphone for the price. The treble is a bit too bright for some music especially the album Lorde.

    • Yeah, got mine yesterday. I feel the same but hopefully that'll change once burn in.

      Really awesome headphones!

My only gripe is the headband hurts my head if I wear them right on the centre of my head. Have to wear the
headband towards the back of my head. Anyone else feel the same?

  • I ordered two but only received one. Do they ship them separately.

    • My understanding is that, yes they ship seperate.

In the discussion on the AKG Q701 massdrop page, one person specifically mentions ordering six, and picking them up separately.
