Seems like Pccasegear is having a sale on their XFX R9 290 series cards. Both are listed as pre-order with stock expected to be delivered tomorrow. Standard Startrack shipping is the cheapest option at $15, bringing the totals to $414 and $564 respectively. Next cheapest 290 on SI is $449 (GB WF3) and 290X is $579 (MSI REF).

Both these cards are based on the reference design (with reference clocks) with the aftermarket Double Dissipation cooler fitted. The 290 is definitely a great price. The Double dissipation cooler is supposed to be one of the quietest around, but a little on the hot side. Both come with a copy of BF4.

I have an XFX 290 Ref and I haven't had any issues with it. The performance is seriously extreme and it has overclocked well.

Just noticed there are some others:
290 DD Black edition $100 off - $449
290X Reference $100 off - $499
290X DD Black edition $100 off - $569
and there's even some Gigabyte ones but the savings aren't great.

  • I noticed most of the stock r9 290 cards went off the AMD list for the past few months. Interestingly I just sent a 290 back that had black screening and that was sent to manufacturer. I wouldn't be surprised if this is some new revised batch coming through, and I'll more than likely get a double-dissipation unit when my RMA comes back.

AMD never admitted to a wide issue with the cards black screening, but would obviously be a big setback for them too - a flagship product needing callbacks/rma, so perhaps the manufacturers are now pushing the fixed units through on the low.

Well, lets hope they fixed it up, but these prices are quite nice.

Is this the issue where the monitor goes to sleep and then you're unable to wake it?

      • I have that issue to occasionally. I was initially thinking it was something to do with kb/m being on USB3 and not waking the computer properly. Never really thought about the graphics card causing the issue. Will have to investigate.

    • My current main issue with their 290 is the BSoD when watching a video on chrome or media file. Quite annoying if you can imagine.

      • wow can you guys tell me more about these issues?

I have a reference r 290 card bought secondhand and would like to know what to watch out for ( i was given the receipt so I can claim warranty).

        • Mine BSoDs when I open, close or skip to sections of a video file. Mind you, this doesn't happen all the time. I'd say below 2% of the time it may BSoD when doing one of these things.

  • Sorry, but what's the difference between a 290 and a 290x?
Does it justify an extra $150?

    • +3

Performance difference is 5-10%, Cost difference is 35%. So no, but the added e-peen with the 290x may make it worth it if you're into bragging about how epic your rig is on the internets.

      • Ahh, ok thanks for the reply. Probably will stick to the base model then.
