This post contains affiliate links. OzBargain might earn commissions when you click through and make purchases. Please see this page for more information.

Not sure if this was allowed, however I do believe people need to know about this because not everyone would have experienced the issues (i.e. half of Sydney). Thus even if this gets moved to the forums hopefully it reaches enough people so that they know to DESTROY THE VODAFONE NETWORK!

Absolutely unlimited mobile data usage FREE OF CHARGE, EHRMAGHERD!

Seriously, if you are on Vodafone. Take advantage and just download whatever you want, watch Youtube, just absolutely demolish it especially if you guys use smartphones. Just use Personal Hotspot / Tethering (Same Thing), and just KILL DAT DATA!

Enjoy you OzBargainers!

From a Store Rep of Vodafone jimbobaus:

It will work for all numbers which were active on the Vodafone network between the hours of 1pm and 5pm Thursday June 19th 2014 (AEST)

Thus buying a $2 SIM will NOT work for this offer. Sorry, unlucky.
Mixed messages, and different sources of information concede different viewpoints. We'll have to wait and see if purchasing a SIM tomorrow will enable users to take advantage of this offer.

From some mad kid:

EVERYONE I JUST RECEIVED A CALL BACK FROM VODAFONE POCKET WIFI ARE INCLUDED IN THE UNLIMITED WEEKEND!!!!!

Pocket Wifi has seem to be approved for use 3G + 4G.

REMEMBER THOUGH: IT STARTS AT 12AM FRIDAY and ENDS 3AM MONDAY AEST!
(Starting Friday Night/Saturday Morning)

Note: NEVER seen Optus or Telstra do ANYTHING like this before.
Note: I like this offer. Period.

I'm noticing this occurs after downloading around 2GB of data. Just turn off mobile data and then turn it back on.

      • +2

had to reset my network as well to fix the issue. reseting the device isn't enough to also speed up the connection.

  • +3

Having no problems sustaining 300kbps overnight on 3.75G HSDPA+.

Annoying that the connection needs to be reset every 2GB though, on Prepaid.

    • +1

Try and use an app to automate it like others on whirlpool.

  • +2

Lebara has free data all weekend (vodafone MVNO) according to a txt they sent me!

    winning..

    • +1

5.2mbs down, 2.8mbs up on samsung S3 on lebara (no 4g).. 6:30pm on a saturday.. shh dont tell anyone.. Vodafone network is awesome

  • Supposedly it's working for people with freshly bought $2 prepaid sims?

    • I can confirm it's working (activated on Friday).. But you must load it with some credit first ($5 min). I wonder if you can transfer like $1 from a family or friend :P

      • Where is the $5 recharge? Is it an add-ons for the internet?

    • +3

Yeah, Mrs went into work today (Saturday) and there was a internal memo advising that they have decided to allow all vodafone sims to gain access to the free data weekend.
Apparently, they decided it was simpler.

On the upside, reports in the media are that Vodafone's network is handling the pressure really well.
I know personally i was getting 50mbs on 4G in the city all day today (Sat)

      • +1

Well it was published yesterday late afternoon in Vodafone forums ! Thats the problems, some store reps did not even know about it today and some were saying its impossible and some not interested in free data !

As of the network , yes it has coped pretty well but only on 4G ! 3G network was dead slow and thats what 99% coverage is

        • +2

Can vouch that my mother's 3G wifi received a good hammering over the weekend; Frankston and no problems at all … Son has been downloading YouTube all weekend there. They said it was running as fast as ever. Only reason she hasn't converted to 4G is that the 3G is running well there. We didn't make any note of the data used there though.

I, 4G wifi at Cranbourne, used about 26GB on iPad2 apps, at Cranbourne; no problemos here either.

Well done Vodafone; good PR exercise.

        • +1

Likewise, Langy on 3G! Good thing about the Samsung is I've set a data usage alert. Apperently I'm 14GB over my allowance. Vodafone app says I haven't used a single byte!!!
Majority of this was done Sat morning between 12 and 3am! I could've gone crazy like some on here, but I honestly couldn't even think of anything extra to use it on!!!

        • If you are an established customer of Vodafone wifi actually you can broach a good deal on 4G with them.

Regrettably I recently changed my wifi from Virgin (Cranbourne is absolutely destroyed with everyone on Optus) to Vodafone I did not get much of a deal (only a few dollars discount … even though I have 3 mobile phones with them).

My mother (regular Vodafone 3G in Frankston) was then offered only a few dollars extra to convert her 12GB 3G wifi to 4G. Really there is no reason to for her to change over at the moment … even if it is so cheap … Aargh! I arranged her Vodafone wifi for her, as she is a deaf senior so I feel a tad ripped off, paying about $20 more than Mother when I always do all the work chasing internet/wifi/phone deals for her. I even have her mobile phone onto my account plan, which only costs $10 extra (we are old 3 customers) … I don't think they do that anymore though.

        • I'm only on mobile with VF. I've stuck with Optus for a while now for the house. Only pay $50 for 50GB cable and home phone line (used for fax). Although since moving house the ADSL is nowhere near up to the old house's cable speed, so I will be looking soon!!!

        • Been with Vodafone (3 mobiles) since the 3 takeover (etc.) but only got about $5 discount off the 4G rate, which is offered to everyone, wifi from Virgin ($39 3G 12GB wifi) to Vodafone 4G (now $60 - $65 for 12GB). That is my only whinge there; such a small discount for a long term (mobile) customer. 4G plans everywhere seem rather excesive to me; don't know how the telcos can charge so much.

My mother is on Vodafone 3G 12GB for $39, which is working really well! But, on the same call to change my wifi over (3G to 4G), the offer for her to change to 4G was only a few dollars to upgrade to 4G for 12GB.

Yes, speeds are quite variable depending on where you are. I have taken our old Virgin 3G wifi with us on travels and happy with speeds then. Mount Hotham, Gold Coast and Echuca (just last year). It absolutely FLEW at Echuca; I believe even far faster than Vodafone 4G even! The Virgin 3G at home (Cranbourne) though is rather abysmal which is why I had to change … Optus really sucks in our area too!

Sounds like your Optus $50 50GB plan was a good one; shame you had to move hey!

Yes, I find the Vodafone usage was a bit slow to update also. Virgin was totally immediate though which begs the question why Vodafone cannot do the same. Too easy to go over your limit, especially in the last few days, even with those updates … just too slow. Checking the Vodafone wifi usb dongle seems a bit more accurate … I hope so!

          :o)

destroying it.. yeahhhhhh.. take it hunny

Vodafone network is being hammered, left right and centre but I must say I am amazed that with the current offer being run - it is the best stress test any telco network can ever get on their equipment. I am moving over to Vodafone after this event. If the provider can handle this "obscene and rampant" downloading spree, it will surely handle itself better when it's back to charging on Monday. Well done Voda! They have turned a weakness into a strength. I am just wondering how much data went through its systems through the weekend. [I do not work for Vodafone, or its resellers, dealer or even the mobile telecommunications industry.]

I work for Vodafone and it was as equally surprising for me as it was for our customers to be offered an all-you-can-eat weekend on data downloads. As some have commented “this on the back of a national outage – genius <roll eyes>…” If there was any doubt, then I guess this ballsy move has unequivocally proven just how reliable the New Vodafone has become. Will it silence the critiques? Probably not as some people are just never satisfied. But for the rest of our customers (and potential customers), I couldn’t think of a more convincing way of showing them that the woes of the past are just that… in the past!

What we’ve witnessed is easily one of the biggest, broadest and most public load tests on the Vodafone network since being rebuilt. I’ll say it again just to help it sink in… a national load test, on the back of a national incident, with absolutely no caveats and completely open to public scrutiny! For Management to make such a call immediately on the back of restoring services (which apparently affected all carriers), requires an immense amount of confidence in our new network. After all, which other carrier would have the confidence to even consider doing something remotely like this – let alone on a production network?

The stats from the weekend are simply staggering – no doubt it’ll be publicised through the appropriate channels as interest demands. But in short, my personal respect for the management and operational support teams has jumped several notches. Am I proud to be working for Vodafone? You betcha!

See you on our network soon Twosixfiveoh!

      • +2

I wanna see those stats, they muse be crazilyyy insaaneee…

        • +1

A little birdy told me it's more than 5Gbps during peak

        • +2

Official publicity can be found here:
          http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/vodafone-customer…

"Between midnight Friday and 3am Monday, Vodafone said its customers consumed 590 terabytes of data nationally - twice as much compared to the weekend before. In layman's terms, consuming 590 terabytes is the equivalent of downloading roughly 98 million songs or streaming 393,333 movies."

Damn finished my spree, 140gb over 2 days, damn happy finished my whole downloading queue :)

    • +3

Only ended up downloading about 90gb. Wish this weekend offer was more often!

  • +4

Well, that was fun. Happy to report I pulled 144GB from Sat morning and was pleasantly surprised with the 30Mbps 4G speeds I was getting at Glenwood, NSW. Was gonna ditch voda after contract but will reconsider now, so I guess their stunt has worked!

  • +1

Great deal. Didnt download that much but enjoyed it.
    Cheers.

  • +2

pity for me i was away all weekend with no service and when i got back all i wanted was kfc. tried to find the nearest one and data wouldnt work, too slow i guess.

people wasting it on d/l game of thrones when i have real 1st world problems damn you!

    • +4

You don't know where your nearest KFC is? For shame!!!

      • +2

yeah i dont have it that often, and not since moving here!

actually ending up driving past one and finding about 50 cars in the drivethru thought bugger it and went to red rooster near my house.

i could still go a bucket of chicken though

        • +1

50 cars in KFC and drive straight up to Red Rooster… Does that not tell you something? Personally not a fan of microwaved chicken & chips!!!

        • +2

          i was hungry! lol

  • +2

This can turn into the best advertising for Vodafone's new network!

  • +8

There was no network meltdown, Vodafone has proven its network is reliable and fast!

This should help get rid of the Vodafail image of the past few years!!!

    I only downloaded about 14GB.

    • +1

Can't say I've ever really had much of an issue with the network. My issue has been the last few years that someone off the street can get as good, sometimes better, deal than what they'll do for me after 15 years of custom!!!

      • +1

same here, never had that much trouble.

this was probably the only time ive ever had trouble with them. i thought it was everyone smashing the network i couldnt get my data, but from reading the comments maybe it was something else?

  • Definitely my worst experience
    I got 2 accounts (mobile+tablet)
    Worked beautiful with both
But suddenly I got overspent of $100
Mostly within two hours frame 21-23.00 last night
All of them are around 100mb block each
I didn't even use my iPad that time
At home and wifi is on
Been using this plan for 4 months with no issues
Called the call centre, no product knowledge and promised me his manager will call me tomorrow afternoon
    The mobile account is fine

  • I hope they cancel charges for those who thought it was on Friday morning as a gesture of goodwill.
