When worst thing happen and someone break into our house, do you think having the security footage will help us in getting our stolen stuff back? My impression is that the cops will not do any investigation at all. They will just tell us: no insurance? Too bad.

You have already answered your own question. Further to that the resolution on these things is average best, and that's without bringing up bad lighting.

    • Agree, so I have an expert friend in this field, they do big jobs like museums etc.

In short, the resolution needs to be good enough to identify the person, and yes then you can use it to take action and convict a criminal.

His view is simple, is it a deterrent only? Like putting the fake alarm lights up near the front door, or is it going to be used as a tool to identify and capture the thief. That's what defines how much you need to spend for the quality…

    • Cameras can actually make it very likely to get your stuff back, most of the time its a known person or they can find the guy.

The problem is most people have horrible cameras that are almost useless to police.

You need a high quality 1080p camera that has good low light/night vision or alternatively you can have a motion light.

    • half right, nil insurance you dumb a. Once in one of my past careers I had to try to help a family who lost everything in a house rental fire. The small country town chipped in and replaced their gear and furniture. One month later my boss was upset with me as I terminated the interview with these people who were helped
by the town as they refused to and never saw the need to insure their stuff [insurance, not an area of my then job]. Not often that I get angry, and other staff had to complete the interview.

On the other matter, At least the police will have vision of the breakiners, and maybe they are known, and your home insurance should be less costly.

    • As to the cops doing anything with it. Little to no chance without decent clear footage.

These analogue cameras are not great at showing faces clearly, but you have to spend a bit of $$'s to get something that will be super clear, in both day and night. If you need a few cameras a mix of some lower quality ones with a couple of higher quality ones is good.

I have a 9 channel Swann system with cameras all around my house. The greatest benefit they provide is the footage to give to your insurance company. We had next door neighbours kids break into our shed, $2000+ worth of damage and stolen items. We gave the insurance company screen shots and nothing else was required.

At my last job we spent $20,000 on digital cameras and recording equipment. It was still a challenge to get it to pick up number plates and other details. Getting LOTS of security lighting was the key.

  • If one is wanting some cameras in his house with a decent image with night vision

What brand and model and price is the correct one?

    Or IP cameras

Doesn't need to pick up a number plate, just be able to view inside the house with a decent image.

  • More than likely any thieves will just take the recorder with them as a nice bonus. Who has a secure area inside a suburban house to keep the "$1700" security system secure?

  • Enjoy the footage they leave ;-)

  • It tells you how much they make with RRP pricing..Unbelievable!

  • If you want to be able to make out faces and number plates you need at least HD-SDI, otherwise it just shows some people taking your stuff.

More dollars, but at least you can actually see something worthwhile.

Swann gear is a waste of money.

Have a look at this and decide.

Be very very weary of buying any of the Swann range that has the "Shipped by Supplier: Allow 2-4 weeks for delivery" comment.
I am still waiting for mine from the 16 or APRIL!!
Anytime i can actually get through, DICK says they are waiting for Swann. Swann says they never had stock of the DVR9-1425 anyway!
    BE WARNED!!

  • So what brand and model is recommend ?
