BP Petrol/Fuel Gift Card Discounts - Effectively 5.66% off @ OneBigSwitch

505

You will need to register at One Big Switch (as per link) and you will have the option of buying either of the following amounts. There does not seem to be a definite quantity on how many you can buy, however I'm sure there will be limited gift cards.

Pay $50 - Get $53 worth of value.
Pay $500 - Get $530 worth of value.

*Works like an EFTPOS debit card
*Valid for all fuel types including diesel, plus in-store products
*Valid at participating BP outlets with eftpos Australia-wide for 12 months

This deal certainly beats the petrol vouchers the major supermarkets are offering, however the obvious drawback is you will need to pre-purchase the amounts.

That quote refers to the insurance campaign, not the BP fuel campaign.
The fuel one specifically said no commission was received, from memory.

Also, would it not be a deal if it was half price fuel but news corp received 1c/L? I think it would be quite obviously a good deal. All that matters is that it's cheaper for the consumer, not who earns the profits. That's the ozbargain way. If we were that concerned about who got the profits, we'd be paying more for Australian products and not taking advantage of pricing errors etc.

Reckon this is more of a tiny discount rather than what I would consider a bargain!
BP always more expensive than independent.
If your a true ozbargainer you should never fill up at a BP unless you really had to.

There are a fair few who have to, though. So therefore I wouldn't consider it a negg-able offence. It is a discount. Most car enthusiasts swear by BP ultimate 98 premium unleaded above all other fuels for quality and won't put anything else in their car regardless of the extra cost. So for people like me, who already only go to BP, this deal is saving me money. I wouldn't neg it.

    What's better? $50 or $500

    • dunno.. 1 tank or 7-8 tanks ?
since most people 1 tank can be $70
1x $50 card or 10x $50 cards - share them with you family,

  • -1

Basically a 0.66% difference. Can't really see how they justify that with having 20 million dollars buying power. They are getting a decent commission.

    • How do you work out 0.66%? It's 5.66%

There is no commission. See below from the FAQ:

Will the Big Petrol Switch benefit from this campaign?

Neither the Big Petrol Switch nor One Big Switch nor News Corp Australia will receive a commission if you >take up a special offer as a result of this campaign. The aim of the Big Petrol Switch is to help families >cut the cost of spiralling fuel bills.

      • It's because most of us on OzBargain are already getting 5% off our fuel (either discounted WISH cards, ING/ME Bank rebates, etc). This is onaly an additional 0.66% saving for most of us.

        • -1

Ah I see. But can't you stack those deals?

Also, they'd still be considered separate deals either way. Otherwise you'd effectively be removing 5% of the saving from every possible deal on here.

        • Your way simply lose people a dollar, for many who aren't wasteful,
          50 / (0.975 * 0.95) =
          53.9811 already.

Fortunately, Paywave does NOT lock in to specific vendor, and giftcards I have a choices x2 by applied discount fuel dockets.

        • Sorry where does the 0.975 come from in that equation?

And you can't stack the ING thing with this deal? Is the ING one only over paywave? and the wish gift cards are only at caltex? And there's no other general % off deals that are stackable?

        • From 4c fuel docket worth 2.5% in foreseeable future ($1.56 of 1.60L+/-)

Coles + Woolies Gift cards are bought 0.95 with paywave and as they go through that reader, qualify for rebate. Unlike your predated fuel deal. Thus paywave (card) +discounts stack.

        • @daver:

fuel vouchers can't really be counted though. Because you have to spend money to get that deal. They also have deals at BP where you can spend in store to get a few cents off per litre, but i wouldn't include those. Plus on occasion I find that the coles/woolies non-discounted prices are higher than the prices at BP standard. Although the discounted ones are generally slightly cheaper as well.

Also, if you get premium, that 4c/L is about 2.2% in Canberra where fuel is more expensive. And since the price difference here is more like 2c/L after the discount (because non-discounted prices are higher at coles and woolies here than the non-discounting servos) as I mentioned, that's more like a 1.1% difference.

I do see how they stack and in that case they'd work out to be a roughly similar discount in Canberra after applying for an ING card and transferring money into that account or changing all my bank dealings to use that account, driving to coles and buying food, getting a receipt and keeping that in my wallet and then going to the service counter and buying a gift card on pay wave and then driving to Coles and getting fuel which is non-ideal for my car.

So you can see how that last paragraph is a lot more effort than just clicking buy online and opening my letterbox and paying on those cards at the same servo that I already exclusively go to because my car needs BP ultimate. For roughly the same discount. But I do see how if your circumstances differ, it wouldn't be for you. Just as some other people mentioned that the discounted coles/woolies price is still much higher than the price at united and other independents by more than the 5.56% apparently in their cities. Again, we don't really have independents much in Canberra, so that also doesn't apply to me and wouldn't anyway due to my car's requirements.

        • @rhino015:

rhino, you've missed the point entirely. Just the ING is worth 5%. You don't need to shop at woollies or Coles at all. Just have the ING account and your done. You can use the ING in any BP petrol station with paywave. In fact you can use the ING 5% discount at ANY petrol station so it is far less limiting then buying BP gift cards and then being forced to buy fuel from BP everytime.

        • @apate:

Naa I knew that bit. 5% is less than 5.66%. I believe daver was saying that you can save over 6% using the gift cards plus shopper dockets if you use coles instead.

I see the point that if you didn't already exclusively use BP and you already had an ING account that it might not be worth the effort for the .66%. I meet neither of those criteria though. So for me it's better.

  • from the FAQ's

Can I buy as many cards as I want?

Yes, you can buy as many cards as you would like to. However, some BP stations have Point of Sale terminals that can only process one card per transaction.

    from BP T&C's

If your purchase(s) are greater than the balance remaining on the Card, you will be liable for the payment in cash of any excess purchase amount.

So his means they you have have to pay cash for the remaining balance, if there is not enough value on the gift card to cover the full cost.
That is you cannot use a gift card and a credit card to pay.

It does not say where the location of these 'One Card per Transaction' places are, so I would ask your local BP first about this before purchasing a gift card, that way you are not caught out with out cash.
Yes you can always use the ATM in store for more cash - maybe hit you with an ATM fee as well.

    • +2

Pretty sure by "cash" they mean you pay the remainder of the balance out of your own money whether it be cash or credit, just not another gift card.

      • I agree with unco. They definitely allow a gift card plus a credit card. They can even generally do cash+card splits or card1+card2 splits just generally.

So they obviously mean that if you get $50 of fuel and you have only $30 credit remaining on this card, you have to pay the other $20 in another way. Which was quite obvious really.

I also suspect that you could use the last $20 of one gift card plus another $30 from another gift card, but that quote may be suggesting that only one gift card can be used per transaction. Presumably just due to limitations with their POS equipment. It's not that clear to me whether or not you can use 2 gift cards per transaction from that quote. Not a huge deal to me though, as the money will be spend on the cards either way and the savings achieved regardless.

    Melbourne based car enthusiast here.

This is a great deal for me.

I was desperate and had to fill up at a Liberty last week with their 95 RON. Got a woeful 330kms for that tank. I really want to support an Australian company, but that was terrible. I usually get at least 450kms on a tank of BP 98.

The question is, can I buy these BP Gift Cards with my AMEX?

    • +2

I just asked the online help - Visa / MC only, no surcharge.

    • ~50% better efficiency from 98 vs 95 octane fuel???

LOL - for an enthusiast, you know very little about engines - probably nothing.

my guess is that it is you that is drinking the fuel and not your car.

      • Its more like 30% better economy, which I would suggest from my own experience with a small 4cyl car is about right between standard crap and ultimate.

      Liberty… Australian company…

I have to laugh!!! Have you seen most of these independent store owners and the staff they hire. An ex of mine was AM at one and had nothing but overseas "students" (on student visas) working there! Not her doing… But had no choice as the "Australian" owner hired them directly!!!

  • YEah that was my question if AMEX accepted grrrrr…bugger!

  • -2

By the time you sign up, go through the order process, check their spam emails, wait up to 4 weeks for the card(s), fuel will go up.
We need a quicker process or better discount.

    • Fuel price going up doesn't affect the percentage discount you get. If it goes up you were going to be paying more anyway. So just buy more cards up front if the dollar saving is your concern.

  • has anybody received their voucher cards yet?

  • i havent, this is definitely taking a while.

    • —Fuel is up now, so good chances of card arriving imminently.
*Reducing any excess, hopefully you 've scheduled >than '1'..
~180.7 in SYD Sth for this ultimate product people swear on.. .
      Opportunity cost some~<30.0 c(after discounts) post lock-in

  • Received mine, on 15/7. Thanks OP!
