Can it be used in McDonald’s?

    • +2

Yes, Fast Food Restaurants (MCC 5814) included!

      • How about KFC?

        • +2

          Yes, I did last week

          • @impoze: Hasn't worked in the app for me in like a month.

            • +2

@Imnuts7: Only working in store not app

              • +1

@aoliren: KFC's instore prices are much higher than App's so that working instore is useless.

                • +1

@Neoika: This is why I like Macca's app where you can redeem deals at in store kiosk and pay with discounted gift cards.

              • +3

                @aoliren: I tried a few ways to use this card in the KFC app;
                - pay with Restaurant Choice card in Apple Pay: Success
                - pay using Restaurant Choice as Credit Card: Fail
                - pay with Restaurant Choice card in Google Pay: Fail (card not able to be selected)

I don’t have Samsung Pay so not sure if it will give a different result.

                • @Pseudo: Thanks for sharing. So few are willing to say;
                  - pay with TCN Restaurant card in Google Pay: Success

                • @Pseudo: It looks like the KFC app by default now uses Google's payment system for credit card. The reason why Restaurant Choice doesn't work in Google Pay is because it asks for CVC again for online purchases (and keeps giving errors if you try reentering) even when you entered it when adding the card in the first place.

                  • +1

@Imnuts7: Noticed this on yesterday, I did tap and pay instead which worked fine, but won't work for app exclusive deals

                    • @impoze: ok, used to work and that was the last time I used about 3 weeks ago, they must have changed it since then….damn, same with foodhub payments

  • Can you stack this with the 10% off plus saver thing? My fortune teller has raised their rates, I need a few of these.

    • +2

If I tell you will ask your Fortune Teller to give me this week’s PowerBall numbers?

      • Well, my teller requires upfront payments. We are at an impasse 😅

    • +4

      No.

The Coles Plus Saver terms and conditions lists the purchase of gift cards as an exclusion for that 10% discount (as well as the 2x points perk):

Coles Plus Saver Subscription Benefits are not valid for purchases of all gift cards, iTunes cards, Coles Insurance products, charity items/donations, tobacco and tobacco related products, Mobile and Tech Accessories (inc. plans and recharge), Opal top up, calling cards, online delivery fees, Coles Plus Saver subscription fees, Coles Plus subscription fees, or purchases from Coles Express, DoorDash, UberEats, Menulog and Vintage Cellars.

I have purchased a number of third-party gift cards at Coles after signing up for Coles Plus Saver as part of the three-month trial offer, and the checkout has never shown the prompt for redeeming the monthly discount, even though the Coles Plus hub says my monthly discount is available. I have also not earned 2x points on any of these purchases.

        Thanks master 🙏

      • Hi
Is This card acceptable all restaurants? Or its trail approach ? I do not know about Mcc code but will try to check my statement

        • +1

Strictly speaking, it should be accepted at most (but not all) restaurants and eateries across Australia. Whether this gift card works at the next restaurant or eatery you go to will depend on the following:

          • The MCC assigned to the restaurant/eatery, and
          • Whether the restaurant/eatery chooses to accept Restaurant Choice gift cards as a payment method.

I discuss this in more detail in this FAQ on the wiki linked at the bottom of the deal description.

          • @WookieMonster: point # 2 is irrelevant as it should be accepted based on MCC?

            • +6

@zooter: Point #2 is still relevant, as that refers to the merchant’s discretion on whether they want to or can accept Restaurant Choice gift cards (even if the merchant uses a whitelisted MCC).

              For example:

              • If you have a physical Restaurant Choice gift card and the merchant uses EFTPOS terminals with no magstripe readers (and they refuse to do a MOTO transaction), you cannot use a physical Restaurant Choice gift card as a payment method. You would need to add the Restaurant Choice gift card to a mobile wallet first, then use it from a mobile wallet to get around this issue.

              • If you attempt to place an order at a restaurant or eatery by scanning a QR code and making payment the order online, the website may reject Restaurant Choice gift cards. For example, me&u is used by a lot of restaurants for ordering online whilst at a table, and that platform rejects Restaurant Choice gift cards as a payment method if you enter them into the credit/debit card section of the online checkout, due to these gift cards not supporting 3-D Secure. If you are on an iPhone, the workaround is to use the Restaurant Choice gift card via Apple Pay, but AFAIK, there is no workaround if you are on an Android device.

  • +1

How do you use this if you order something more than the value of the gift card? Split payment?

    • +1

If the restaurant allows it, yes.

    • +3

Split payments will depend on the merchant and their POS set up.

      For example:

      • At one restaurant I ate at recently, they could do split payments, but they could only split payments based on items on the bill, rather than an actual dollar amount. For example, I could choose to pay for one main meal ($27) and a drink ($6), then have my mate could pay for the other main meal ($29), but I could not pay $30 towards the total amount owed, because none of the items on the bill added up to $30.

      • At another restaurant, they allowed split payments, but would apply a 5% surcharge for doing so.

Also, you need to factor in any payment surcharges for Visa payments, as the gift cards in this deal operate on the Visa network, and a lot of restaurants and other eateries like to surcharge Visa payments (and may not even tell you about it beforehand). If you are trying to use up every last cent on your gift card, that will make things tricky.

      • +1

At another restaurant, they allowed split payments, but would apply a 5% surcharge for doing so

Seriously, adding a fee because you're asking to split a payment. That is ridiculous.

      • +2

Grill'd lets me do split all the time.

I pick a quiet time and use up all my vards with odd leftovers.

        • Good to know. Any surcharge? I really don't like it when there is an odd balance left, like $12.35, and then there is still a surcharge to calculate backwards before you tell them how much to put the split…

      • wow, that is pretty shit

      • 5% that's got to be illegal

    • +1

McDonald counter can do split payment

      • Only card and cash

Long gone are the days you can do card and card

  • +1

I can see this selling out 1 min after opening time.

    • +1

They are popular, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

  • I have a stack of small amount at home, how do people spend though?

  • +2

My credit card is ready !

  • Can these be converted to digital and added to Apple Wallet?

    • yes

    • +1

For these gift cards, you do not actually need to convert to digital (which is what you have to do with the physical TCN restaurant-related gift cards). You can add them as a new payment card to Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet.

      • no, you can use the physical card

        • +1

You can also use the physical card if you prefer, but only if the merchant accepts swipe payments.

Most EFTPOS terminals I have seen at restaurants and other eateries lately have magstripe readers, but I was at a café recently where they only had the Zeller Terminal 2. That has no magstripe reader, which meant I had to use a Restaurant Choice gift card whilst stored on a mobile wallet to make a payment at that café.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: ok, good to know. I usually store it in wallet if I have a physical but use the physical card when I can at point of sale as I have other digital ones and sometimes it goes to the wrong card. (I just tape the balance left on the card on the front of the card to keep track) I like to use them up one by one but I hate it it takes it out of the wrong one. I nickname them with the balance but when you see the card in the wallet, unless you click on it you can't see the nickname. It can be a little annoying

            • @souths123: we must be twins in the brain…i nickname them as well in the wallet..annoying with 25 characters and no numbers allowed though! in Android, it shows the nickname as I swipe through my 100 cards there :)

        • The physical card is also restricted to some places vs add to Google wallet / apple pay

E.g physical card can't use at bakeries but if you add on your phone you can pay

      • How do you convert the TCN Restaurant Choice physical card into the digital form?

        • I am confused, because "TCN Restaurant Choice" does not exist.

          • TCN Restaurant gift cards are operated by TCN and are sold either in physical or digital forms. If you have the physical form, that is an eftpos-only gift card that cannot be directly used for online transactions or added to a mobile wallet. However, if you go to the TCN website, you can exchange the physical form for the digital form (which will be added to your TCN app and then you can add to a supported mobile wallet or see the card details to spend online).

          • Restaurant Choice gift cards are operated by Blackhawk Network, and the ones sold through this Coles deal run on the Visa network. You can use the physical card itself, or use the details on the physical card to add it to a supported mobile wallet or spend online. (If you have a digital Restaurant Choice gift card, you can use the details to add to a supported mobile wallet or spend online).

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thank you for that. Yes, I meant the top one. Thank you for the explanation.

So when you convert TCN Restaurant Gift card from physical to digital it can be used at more venues ie fast food?

            • +1

@unity1: Be mindful also, in recent times looks like you need to register TCN Restaurant card before you can activate and add to wallet otherwise you'll run into an error.

              • @Craze: I did just try it an hour ago. It didn’t work immediately after purchase but 15-20 minutes later it did without registering. Registration was optional. You could skip that.

              • @Craze: true, i ran into this issue as well

  • what's the maximum load to this variable card? $500?

    • +1

OP mentioned in the description - $500 max.

  • 10% is pretty decent, I miss the good old days of 15% off on the digital cards

    • sometimes when Restaurant Choice used to see direct from their website they had up to 20% off….those were the days…

      • 20% and then use that on shopback to buy another discounted restaurant card

  • @WookieMonster, can we still buy 3rd party giftcards with TCN eftpos cards at Coles or have they plugged this loophole?

    • +1

      That should still work.

      • What about category choice or Zip's visa groceries gift card?

  • this one can be used at 5462 bakery as well.

    • Are you sure? I thought only TCN restaurant card allows bakery?

      • i did use it at breadtop and paid last month.

worth trying it if you are not sure, buying a $4 bread is easy:)

        • +1

Interesting, I'll give it a try!

      • +1

        It depends on the breadtop

Some are 5462 which yes guy can use the digital wallet version of tcn restaurant, restaurant/ cafe choice. The physical card will reject on all 3.

and some breadtop are 5411 which will work on groceries choice gc

  • +1

Can someone confirm the use of this for hotels?

    • It's hard to test because most hotels want a credit card at check in for your deposit and then they charge that credit card when you check out.

      • You can always ask to pay with another card at check out. Unless you use express checkout then you can settle your bills in full the night before checkout.

    • +5

I’ve successfully used Restaurant Choice on the ALL (accor) app to prepay for two seperate hotel stays in Sydney.

      • Does paying this way affect/nullify the Accor reward points or status points on the booking?

        • +1

No, it’s essentially just checking out with a Visa Card and you earn points and status nights just as you normally would.

          • @JordanM: Awesome. I learnt something new today about points hacking. Thank you.

Presumably as the card has a $500 limit, your booking must be under that amount, as there is no way to split transaction with Accor online? So essentially restricting you to a 1 or 2 night stay type of booking?

            • +1

              @Jstrrrr: Correct

Potentially could do split payments onsite at hotels but I wouldn’t count on Hotels being necessarily happy to do so.

    • I stayed in an apartment once where the owner took payment over EFTPOS machine on site. It worked and also they let me split over a few cards…

Also used at motel and hotels stays

Also restaurant of hotels as well

  • Finally ! The variable cards included I thought those sites put the end to these cards.

    • Only happens once a twice a year at Colesworth

Make the most out of it

  • +2

Only complaint about these cards is that theres no quick way to check balance like for TCN restaurant

    • +2

I save them to Google wallet and use the card "nickname" to save my balance each time I use it. It's a pain though, as the nickname can only be written words, not numbers.

      • yes, I do the same, but I occasionally manually check the balance to ensure it is correct

    • Best thing is to add to your my prepaid centre profile

You can check all your restaurant choice cafe choice ultimate celebration gift cards all other Blackhawk gift cards all in one

  • +2

    Why is this so popular?

    • +4

      10% saving at Restaurants/Fast Food.

      • Hotel motels accommodation bakeries and more

  • +2

don't forget similar deal running at Woolies (equates to 10% off) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/912289

Differences between TCN Restaurant and Restaurant GC seems to be the following:

    1) TCN is physical but you can convert to digital - https://choice.gift/pages/the-pamper-card#landing-retailers

    2) TCN is limited to $50 & $100 unlike variable load

    3) TCN balance can be checked directly in the app if you convert

    4) TCN can actually be used online with accepting merchants (I think so, I cannot say for sure, but I have used this online)

    • This restaurant can be converted into or added on to Apple Pay IIRC.

      • Yep, indeed (Google Wallet too).

    • +1

Was gonna buy more of those but will buy a $500 variable of this now because slightly higher discount (straight 10% discount is slightly better than 20x points, and this gives Flybuys points) and not being $100 max value, although I do prefer TCN Restaurant for the app to check balances and store cards.

Have used both Restaurant Choice and TCN Restaurant online (of course, doesn't always work though - most recently tried to use TCN for The Cheesecake Shop online order but wouldn't go through even after entering the Mastercard code sent by SMS).

      • how do you use restaurant choice online? It has never worked for me….even in google pay it says unable to verify card for use online

        • Not sure what the issue is for you, when I've used them in the past they're accepted just like TCN… for app/website payments…

Edit: Were you trying to use online with the eftpos-only RC cards?

          • @MiscOzB: I'm talking about the restaurant gift available in shopback

Also maybe depends on the billing system and what MCC comes through when I order?

        • don't bother trying to verify the card in wallet…last time I tried that not only didn't it work but it stuffed it for me to use as a tap payment. I had to redo the card in wallet to fix. Just get the full card details incl exp date and CVV and add that manually as a card payment when paying online or in app

    • 5) TCN cards can always add to wallet with SMS verification, however RC couldn't be added if wallet got flagged

    • Their use cases are very different outside the 581x shops. However BH tends to be very strict with online purchases, most of them would get declined.

  • Can you buy these with Choice Groceries?

    • +2

Yes. You may have to pay at front counter/manned checkout rather than self serve if doing split payments with them (IME Coles self serve gives errors when trying to split pay for gift cards, unlike Woolies self serve).

      • Shhhhhhhhhhh that's a Coles secret

Also woolies is rubbish now you buy over $100 of gc they supervisor needs to come over
