  • The websites says its Restaurant Coice, not Choice - it's french for those wondering ;)

  • Can you buy this with Shopback or cashreward gift card to double dip?

  • Thanks op

  • Silly question potentially- but with variable load can you do cents, i.e. $250.50, or does it have to be round whole number?

    • I usually get random amounts with a variable cards although I have never tried it with this specific gift card, although I wouldn't see why you couldn't (don't quote me I could be completely wrong). $200.50 is between $50-500 so if you should be fine.

    • why do you want to load something like $250.05?

      • +2

I suppose if you consistently go somewhere and order the same thing, you are able to add it up and put like a few weeks worth of money on the card, so you can have exactly the right amount so you waste none.

I see Pub+ has 30% Monday - Wednesday this month at the taverns. @WookieMonster would you have any idea if The Restaurant Choice Gift Card be accepted at these taverns ?

    • +1

      Yes

    • Maybe

    • Probably

I would like to think it would work. I have never visited any of those locations, but they appear to be businesses that should be categorised as MCC 5813.

If those locations use a QR code ordering system at the tables and you pay through that system instead of paying in-person at a counter, it will depend on whether the QR code ordering system will accept Restaurant Choice gift cards as a payment method. The Pub+ website mentions linking a Pub+ account to a me&u account, which strongly hints at me&u being used at some (if not all) locations, which can be problematic for Restaurant Choice gift cards.1

(Btw, the tag did not work.)

      1. As discussed here, me&u will not accept Restaurant Choice gift cards as a payment method if you use the credit/debit card option at checkout, because me&u does not accept Visa cards that do not support 3-D Secure (and I reckon that me&u is choosing to do this to reduce their exposure to potentially fraudulent transactions). However, if you are using an iOS device, you can get around this issue by adding the Restaurant Choice gift card to Apple Pay, then using Apple Pay at checkout.

      • you can get around this issue by adding the Restaurant Choice gift card to Apple Pay

My experience has been that this does not work as me&u is not classified as a restuarant.

        • I have made at least 10 purchases at different eateries using Restaurant/Café Choice gift cards through me&u over the last year, and all transactions worked fine.

The transaction descriptions for each of these purchases were of the eatery itself, not me&u.

          • @WookieMonster: Interesting. me&u must have changed its process (perhaps after too many people complained they didn't recognise 'me&u' as a merchant, resulting in increased chargebacks).

            • @YesPleaseThankYou: Interestingly, the issue I raised above has come up in the news:

The investigative technique has come to light in an unfair dismissal case, where an employee was sacked after disputing “multiple transactions” totalling $500 from an unknown merchant on his personal bank account.

The now former employee said “the transactions in question were processed through QR code ordering” at a pub, "but were … handled by a third-party point-of-sale company.”

That meant the transactions did not show up on bank statements in the name of the pub.

“This naturally leads to confusion, as the transaction description does not clearly reflect the actual venue name,” the former employee said in written submissions to the Fair Work Commission.

“At the time of lodging the [transaction] disputes, I could not recognise the merchants involved.

  • Hopefully flybuys points are earned for them.

Still got my discount on the 6th-10th card after scanning flybuys.

    • think if buying 6 together then 6th card will charge full.

are u going to cash out 5k?

      • I did 5 at one store, another 5 at another. Both scanned flybuys, both got full discount.

Just wondering if i will get base points for them.

        • Is flyvuyers being scanned required for the 10% off

          • +1

            @cloudy: Nope it’s not.

Update: I got 4500 base points.

            • @jusoh: Looks like the 5 cards limit per account is not enforced this time. Good to hear that you got base points for all of them as well.

Can these be used for EatClub payment?

    • +1

      should be fine
      according to Mcc list
      mcc for eatclub is 5812

    • +1

Or you can always pay with gift card then tell eatclub you forgot to use the card and they will give u the refund.

      • Oh gee really? Surely it becomes suss when you do it one too many times though!

    • Yeh it works I've tried it.

      • thanks, i’ll give it a try tomorrow

  • variable load one still available?

    • not available in the 3 coles I've gone to in VIC, heaps of $100 ones

      • Ditto in WA

      • Ditto in ACT

      • Have a look around the checkouts (in addition to the main gift card section).

  • I bought 5 gift cards. I can check the balance by phone, but none of them can be added to Apple Wallet — it says: “This card is not eligible for Apple Pay.” Any idea how to fix this? Should I email support?

    • I'm having the same issue. Hopefully just a temporary thing.

    • I have been having this issue for 6 months now. Can't add this and most other Visa based cards. Gone through Apple, the gift card company and issuing bank and never was resolved. Any type of Mastercard works fine. I have purchased a cheap android phone to load up my visa cards. PITA

  • Has anyone tried this on hotel? Can you put through an online hotel booking via this GC?

    • Yeh it has worked for others but only if you book directly through the hotel online or pay in-person/over phone.
You can't use it on sites like Booking.com and Expedia because they use a different MCC (Travel Agencies)

      • +1

I suspect the Restaurant Choice gift card would also not work at hotels that are assigned unique MCCs (MCC 3500-3840, as seen on pages 34-46 of the Visa Merchant Data Standards Manual). I am not sure how widely used these MCCs are used in Australia though…

    • I've used a bank card to reserve a room then at checkout pay with this card at front desk.

  • I tried to use one of my restaurant choice cards through a third party payment site for a chinese meal but it kept rejecting (foodhub I think)….I have paid using a different card a while ago (which is not $0), so not sure if it has blocked being able to use it through there now? I even checked the balance, plenty on there and the details were correct, so no reason to not work….strange. I have used the card once as a tap, so the card works through wallet. Anybody else found this?

    • Others have commented running into issues using online, but ok tapping at in store POS.

    • +1

I've come across this before, those third party ordering/payment sites can be very hit and miss at accepting these cards. This is because they may be using a different MCC or they may be enforcing 3-D Secure like discussed above. Possible workaround is to try with Google/Apple Pay instead of entering CC details (if available)

      • thanks, I was wondering as I have used the RC cards before on that portal for the same restaurant, without any issues

  • Plenty variable at my local

  • Variable one still in stock in Coles Worldsqure, just bought 2 30 mins ago

  • Anyone successful in adding Restaurant Choice to Apple Wallet? I get invalid card details error, and I know the details are correct.

I wonder if Apple uses its own MCC when adding cards, which gets declined as not an eligible MCC.

    • +1

Anyone successful in adding Restaurant Choice to Apple Wallet?

      Yes, 2 cards.

      • Ok thank you for confirming. Must be this particular Apple account.

    • Ideally you will need to buy a NFC enabled android (preferably a Samsung due to the additional Samsung Pay) if you often buy digital wallet gift cards.

    • +1

I had a similar issue, turned out that I had too many gift cards already in apple wallet. Deleting an old gift card from my wallet did the trick. Now need to delete an old one before adding a new one.
Discovered this when it failed to load on the iPhone but worked fine by adding it to an Apple Watch.

  • Question, would this work at a restaurant overseas? Are the merchant codes the same?

    • Merchant Category Codes should be the same overseas as Australia, because it is standardised by ISO 18245. The MCC manuals from Visa, Mastercard and AMEX (as examples) are based on this ISO standard. That means overseas payment providers should be assigning MCCs to merchants in the same way as they are assigned in Australia. That also means the weirdness you sometimes see with assigned MCCs would also occur overseas…

I am not entirely sure whether or not this gift card works overseas.

      • I have no personal experience with using it overseas.

      • The Restaurant Choice product page and the Where to Use page both state it can be used in Australia (which appears to suggest it can only be used in Australia).

      • The gift card terms and conditions does not specifically state it can only be used in Australia, plus clauses 11 and 13 both talk about acceptance at overseas merchants (including a 3.5% international transaction fee).

    • It will work as long as MCCs permit. There is no restrictions on currency/payment processor country of origin.
I have personally used it overseas.

      • was there an international fee surcharge?

        • The fee is detailed in the T&Cs, so presumably yes.

        • Yes but you still come out saving a bit of money compared to using a no forex fee credit card.

  • Stopped working for me on Hungry Jacks app. Can anyone confirm?

    • +1

Worked for me just 2 hours ago.

      • Thanks. It's just me then.

        • I got issue using the app today too. Order and payment went through even though there was error message. And the store didn’t receive my order either.

    • could not working on KFC app, HJ app, but working at store
      from my own experience

  • When you are paying with this GC do you get charged for the eft machine fee 1.5%?

    • +1

If you are using this gift card at a merchant that surcharges for Visa debit payments, you will need to pay that Visa debit surcharge.

      For example:

      • If the merchant applies a 1.5% surcharge for all card types (including Visa debit), you will need to pay that surcharge.
      • If the merchant applies no surcharge for Visa debit, you will pay no surcharge.
  • There's a new offer on these cards: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/916920

  • i have purchased $500 gift card on this deal on 13th July, used a few time on apple pay and someone stolen my card information and used remaining amount ($347.57) on starbucks account top up.

just wondering if anyone else had the same issue, the phycial card was kept in my wallet whole time, the card got regitered by another person. i have contact TCN and Starbucks, there are just tell me to reach out to another party.

i have also contacted coles support and waiting on them to response.

    thanks in advance

See the disputes section here https://www.restaurantchoice.com.au/terms-conditions/ and escalate to AFCA in need.

Also, see the other thread linked above — others have also alleged fraud.

      • thanks, i'm hoping Coles to help me out, just waiting on the response, if they also can't do anything i will make a complaint at AFCA
