WARNING STAY AWAY FROM DSE

Never ordering from DSE again, used to work for them too what a disgrace! - below is what was put in ACCC complaint I have made I had character limit of 1500 so had to keep to limit

Ordered 11 game pads put in my 1st order got cancelled reason given that account holder name didn't match card holders name - my account, my brothers card. I put in 2 orders this way thinking system error rang DSE spoke to K. who explained the issues .3rd order was made through my mums account & card showed payment had been taken only to later be cancelled except now no stock. I spoke to P. reference number 6460790 the next day and she assured me that because of everything that had happened that once there was stock available( I was told that stores no stock) to call and she would put the order through at sale price, I asked for her employee number and only given reference number she said that once they had stock to call her personally and she would take care of it, and that she was not leaving anytime soon. So I rang Burwood store yesterday and my friend even went and saw with his own eyes they had stock level of four which is still the case. I rang DSE today on 1300 366 644 and after being on hold for 1 hour spoke to a lady would refuse to give me her name and she said they could not put the order through because they were separate to stores, I asked to be put through to ''team leader'' and I was told that P. was on leave. After threatening ACC/FT she said she would contact Burwood and spoke to Lance and organise only one for me I was put on hold only to be hung up on. On top of all this still no refund

Mod: Removed personal information.

Update: Called K regarding my other order DSE batteries was told that eBay orders were separate and was given 2 numbers to call A direct number to EBAY! good luck to anyone who ordered batteries lucky I paid through PayPal

Update: 04/07 - Thought I should mention refunded after waiting 1 week!

They told me it hasn't but Im not sure also they said if I didn't want to chase it up it would automatically go back into the account in 3-5 business days I think its been about 4 so we see what happens there

        • Just called ING and was told that it was DSE responsibility to put in the to contact them and let them know to release the funds back to mums account what a joke just more rubbish from DSE

        • +1

ye man, but the transaction has to clear first. i had some homie in America take my AMEX digits and bought something online, i called up Commbank and the said they couldn't do anything till it cleared. Once it's cleared it will show up on yours and their statements, then you should be sweet from there for a refund.

takes 2-3 days to clear up on their end, and I'm sure it'd take up to 2 weeks for them to send it back. With the assumption that they have to fill out a credit notice and get all that paperwork approved….idk though cause i don't work for DSE, but thats usually how it would work.

      • so they can't refund it

        Of course they can.

        • well done buddy, you must work for the tabloids. Read the whole sentence before you reply with a useless comment

        • I read the whole post. Didn't want to quote the whole thing, but could have, and just written 'irrelevant/wrong' underneath…

        • @McFly: how was it irrelevant and incorrect? have you dealt with electronic funds before? If payments are still pending, the bank cannot contest the payment, nor can DSE release the funds they technically do not own.

        • +1

If you mean have I ever had a credit done instantly on my credit card then answer is yes, countless times. Rocket science it ain't.

        • @McFly: Mod: Removed Personal Attack If you are talking about instant refunds at the shops and whatnot, thats true, it comes back instantly, if you accidentally purchase something online, and payment has not been received by the other party, they cannot give you a refund because your bank has not cleared and processed the transaction. Much like if you have fraudulent activity on your card, the bank will contest the transaction, but only after the payment clears. True that is partly cause they want to also find the culprit.

another example would be when your work pays you your weekly wage. Say they pay you wednesday morning, you won't receive that till wednesday night or thursday, however once they lodge the payment, its out of their account. That few hours, the funds are up in the air until its processed and cleared by the bank.

I'm here trying to help jsyer86 with a rookie mistake, and you are here trying to start a ridiculous argument. Give your bank a call and they will back up what i have said.

Some months ago I ordered Phillips earphones from them. It was a deal on OzBargain.

2 months go by, I totally forgot about the order because I buy so many stuff through OzBargain I don't really keep track. I suddenly remembered the earphones had not come yet. Emailed them and a week later they replied saying the product had been discontinued and offered me a refund. I replied back saying sure I'll accept the refund. No refund ever came. 2 weeks later I emailed them again, and they said they'll look into it and refund me. Nothing ever came.

I eventually just gave up. It was $10 for the earphone, not worth chasing up $10 with these idiots.

  • FYI

DSE doesn't do price matching lately.

  • +1

Never had a problem with DSE, I'm in Marrickville. I like to try supporting a "local business" rather than online so drop in there after grocery shopping every now and then to check deals.

  • has any got their batteries yet, they've only part filled my order.

As someone who worked in a large retail company for about half a year (not Dick Smith's though) I'll just say this: nothing will come of your ACC submission.

There's a number of things you need to understand. For one, what's happened here isn't due to the store being intentionally malicious. In big companies, information like this needs to travel though multiple people and points in the computer system. It's very easy for this information to get lost or unable to be found by the person you're currently speaking to. Despite what you may think, the employees of this store are not one big hive mind who know everything that everyone else in the company knows.

The other thing is the ACC only deals with cases that meet specific criteria that deems them a real "anti-consumer" event. A "this store is a big meanie!" complaint like yours are a dime a dozen. ACC complaints don't even work as a threat, as any large store will have heard the same threat regarding similar issues made seven times before lunch. After awhile, you become completely numb to people threatening to report them to the ACC. If issues like yours were both common and a legitimate anti-consumer complaint, the ACC would have already shut them down. If the store has been running the same way for years, it's probably safe to say what they're doing isn't running afoul of the ACC.

I've dealt with customers like you many times before and it's always the same result. No matter how much you kick and scream, your issue won't be resolved any faster. But you know what does work? Being a calm, level-headed human being instead of a walking, shouty sphincter. If you're nice to the person you're speaking to, they will feel for your plight and want to help you and make you happy. Despite what you may think, there's a thinking, feeling human being in the end of the line, not a robotic clone of Hitler. But if the first thing you do is get angry and start making threats, the customer service rep just wants to you piss off and get off the phone. I have no idea why, but a certain portion of consumers seem to have this idea in their heads that nothing will get resolved unless they get angry.

    • +3

As an expert, you'll know it's the ACCC…

      • +3

No. He meant the ACC. This is DEFINITELY organised crime against all humanity by denying a kid buying 11 controllers with his mother's credit card.

        https://www.crimecommission.gov.au/

        • -4

I am no kid jus had no money in my account and like I said not all for me

        • +1

Certainly sounds like it the way you act, write, use Mummy's credit card etc.

      • You're assuming a lot. His complaint was a last resort after a considerable amount of unprofessionalism, and there's no point in assuming he was difficult in his dealings with DSE. In fact, the third person he spoke to seemed quite helpful, implying he was being patient and courteous.

    • +2

the thing that has me so angry is that P said I would be taken care of and now they are changing their story and I had a reference number and everything as proof and still wouldn't help.

      • Life is unfair, people suck, companies are unscrupulous. Move on.

I can only assume you've had a very sheltered life if you're this angry about the situation.

        • There's nothing wrong with holding a company accountable for their actions. There are basic standards that companies, especially in a country like Australia, should live up to. If nobody complained (justifiably), can you imagine how much more they'd get away with? This isn't Russia. Reputation is an important part of a functional, modern society. Let's try not to lose that, OK?

  • +1

Trust me, whenever you feel offended. Just mention the name ACCC it would at least get their attention in the first place. Everywhere's the same, not just DSE.

    • The ACCC are toothless tigers and organisations know this. They also know that the ACCC will not investigate one unhappy customer.

    • I feel offended by your comment, gonna report yo ass to the accc.

But seriously, people will just laugh at you and think you're an idiot, save yourself the embarassment unless you know what you're talking about.

  • Apologies OP, but you do know that there are punctuation marks in the English Vernacular? I can only see sparingly use of full stops in your comments above. Or is that keyboard you have?

I purchased a LCD TV from DSE that was nearly $700 a few months ago via their web site. Credit card was charged the next day. Called a week later, told no stock with no delivery date in sight. Had to call back 3 times to get the same response. Wasted nearly 4 weeks all up and in the end had to obtain refund that took a week to be returned to credit card. Pathetic!!!

    • +3

Very similar story here. And I have heard others with the exact same complaint. They are happy to bill you but they never contact you with any important information (like the item is not in stock and do you want a refund). All the onus is on you to chase them, it's just not acceptable.

Every single online store apart from DSE that I've dealt with that has been out of stock has rang me personally the next day to ask if I want to wait or get a refund.

  • -1

All of those saying they haven't had any problems with DSE in the past clearly haven't tried placing any orders in their sales over the last week:

I placed an order for a MacBook Pro on the weekend with the order and payment both in the same name. The amount was charged to my card but I received a cancellation email the next day. I spent 2 hours on the phone to get through to their customer service to be told that it was my bank's fault and that I would have to reorder, which I did and it was cancelled again within a few hours. I called up again and was on hold for 1.5 hours and when my call finally was answered I heard a male voice shout on the other end and I was hung up on! Eventually when I got through I was told that their security system had flagged my order and I will never be able to order online from DSE again unless I have my bank send them a signed letter stating that I am allowed to use my credit card. Having to get permission from my bank to use my own bankcard is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! I would seriously not recommend ordering anything from them until they sort out these issues. Have a look at their FB page, there are at least 20 complaints from orders in the past week being cancelled due to apparent 'security' risks. https://www.facebook.com/dicksmithaustralia?ref=ts&fref=ts

    • yep exact same story for me 100% same

    • +3

Rubbish. I have. I ordered right at the end of the 20% off sale on Monday night. Have received tax invoice and shipping tracking number yesterday. Now it's only been shipped today it seems (and it's coming from Perth to Brisbane for whatever reason) but so far it's fine for me.

They no doubt have a huge number of orders to get through. Give them some slack.

      • +1

I would have been happy to cut them some slack had they apologised for their system being at fault and rectifying the order, as from the amount of complaints on their fb page they clearly knew about the cancellation problem. But after about 5 hours of phone calls, trying to pass the blame onto my bank, incorrect advice from their customer service reps, and $5400 of my money still not being accessible to me, I think it's really poor form on their behalf. Out of interest, what did you order? Most of the order problems seem to have been people who have ordered macs with the extra 5% off on Sat and Sun.

        • '$5400 of my money still not being' how many MacBook did u put in the order?

        • 1 MacBook @ $2700 charged twice because of the order being cancelled twice.

      • +3

My order is coming up to nearly 3 weeks from the date I ordered and paid during the ebay 20% off sale and still no item. I am yet to receive an order or shipping confirmation from them, but they have my money and gave me positive feedback. How much more slack shall I give them?

        • So over 3 weeks later, having not received even confirmation of my order and 5 emails later, they finally tell me the item I bought when they had 15 in stock is out of stock with no window as to when it will be back in stock.

      • I purchased a laptop from DSE during the sale over the weekend. It was processed on Monday, shipped on Tue (from Hobart to Melb) arrived at my door on Wed morning. I was pretty impressed. My only other DSE online order was the Enloop batteries a few weeks ago and they arrived in similar fashion. Have had no issues so far.

  • +3

Like others I've also ordered many things from DSE and not had a problem, but clearly they do have issues and pretending they don't is just as silly as saying they should be boycotted.

    • Anyone an idea of their business model? Franchise stores indepently owned? Who runs their online business? Maybe that explains some challenges they might be facing.

I had only good experience with my local store although I only go there to pre order games and save $10 bucks. Made a few purchases from their online store, amongst that a ps4 and $8 headphone and was happy with it.

Dick Smith's customer service is abysmal at best. Their Facebook support team takes an hour to respond to a PM. Always takes longer than 30 mins to speak to someone on their support lines. Shocking really.

    • +1

I send DS a written request that someone take ownership of my issues and that I would like a call back. The reply I got was 'Thanks for the feedback'.

I could not agree more that the customer service level should be classed as 'abysmal' to 'non-existant'.

    • +1

OMG you had to wait 1 hour for a Facebook response!

Think of the lives that could have been saved!

Should have easily sorted out your individual problem within 2 seconds or less.

  • Only ever had a few problems with DSE in the past, and instead of ringing them I just message them on facebook. Takes a few hours to reply but I get answer or whatever sorted pretty quickly. No need to sit on the phone all day wasting my time.

  • +1

I just ordered a $399 TV set from DSE last Sunday and they send me today a cheaper model ($340) instead. If I did not recheck the model number very carefully today, I will definitely ignore that as they look exactly the same and I did not even know there's a cheaper model before. That's really unprofessional and nasty for such a big company to do so.

  • Went in to collect my one of two G19 keyboards from Logan Central. Surprise surprise… both of them had been 'shoplifted'!

    • I used to work there years ago. Stock missing was neither rare nor common - we used to classify things as ''stolen' when in reality it was likely either an inventory error, a mistaken sale, a damaged item or return not correctly written off etc. etc. etc.

  • Get over it and move on with life…

  • +2

Ya know I wasn't gonna mention this but seeing as we have a complain about Dick Hea… oops Smith thread I mean I'll bring it up: every single time I've gone into DSE stores for a deal I found on OZB it no longer was available.

Now I dunno if it's just me and my bad luck or what but I started being suspicious that they do this to get people into the stores without the bargain that bought them there. Am I crazy :D :D

  • OP, i bet you $50 you will be back at DSE the next sale they have!

My gut feeling tells me you need to put your finger in the electrical socket a few more times before you learn. lol

    correct? lol

    • -1

I don't know about that, you should have a look at their Facebook plenty of complaints similar to mine I wouldn't buy anything certainly not purchased through PayPal even then risky business, they acting like a company about to go bust not only did I not receive the controllers but looks like I am not going to get the batteries I ordered either. Thankfully ordered using eBay/PayPal for that order

  • +2

I hope the outcome is a fair one for you. I'm sorry that some of the people who commented were so rude and obnoxious, it was very inappropriate. Just focus on the more logical and civilised responses.

    • Thanks mate at least I have the money sadly would have preferred the controllers though Just been a massive waste of time, have a look at their Facebook page you see I am not the only one.

  • +5

I'm surprised by the lack of sympathy for the OP.

    1. How many he buys is irrelevant. It seemed it was legitimately and intentionally advertised at the price he saw.

    2. All he wanted was the goods for the order.

    3. He got dicked around (Pun!), firstly RE: credit card names, and getting his order cancelled, then getting told they would sort it out for him and that didn't happen, and then after a week, finally got a refund. Plus the time wasted, trying to follow up with DSE.

    I'd be annoyed too.

Having said that, I'm not gonna boycott DSE just for one incident, but if this incident happened to me, I'd be shirty too. edit Perhaps that's why this post got so much negativity, on skim reading it looks like a whinging self centred entitled OzBargainer, because he asked everyone to stay away from Dick Smith. But reading deeper, they really stuffed him around.

  • "I just ordered 8 I don't even need that many".

I sympathize with you. I do.

That said, if you only order what you need, and leave some for others. … good karma will mean you don't miss out either.

    • where did OP say that?

"I just ordered 8 I don't even need that many".

      • -1

I did type that but I always order a few more then I need for really good deal for little things anyways like the dse batteries for instance because my friends have jobs and can't order also this time around I ordered a few for my little cousins as well they love playing games on my pc so I thought I order for them to, $10.98 really good price generic pads on eBay cost more

  • I totally agree that Dicksmith has the worst after purchase service ever!!!!!!!!
They got the delivery address invoice mismatching the actually delivery address for my purchased item. How am I to get a tax refund idiots???
So I've been calling all this morning wasting my money on 1300 phone calls. And for each call I choose to get to my online and no consignment number selection (1, 3) I just get a dead dial tone! Dicksmith you are wasting my time and money too!
Get you IT system process and HA NFRs correct!!!

Reminds me of another time when I purchased a tv and didn't follow up for 2 weeks to find out they didn't have it in stock and they didn't even notified me.
Stop dicking your paying customers around!

This is one company well deserved of being beaten out of business just due to high quality service and support. Online doesn't work for you Dick stick to brick and mortar…

I wish people could vote up or down (in this case) posts. I find this information useless for me and far not enough to justify subject "stay away".
Myself have great experience with DSE.

    • Maybe you should have a look at DSE Facebook page

      • Maybe not everyone has problems with DSE? My order went through and was delivered just fine.

        Let it go.

    • when it's delivered, it's good. But until you asked for a refund because they can't fulfill your order, it's going a nightmare, took ages to get your refund.

  • I guess it's a mixed bag when it comes to DSE?

I ordered an Xbox one with titanfall pack last Sunday during the 20% off sale, fully expecting to wait weeks/months to actually get my package.

It arrived at my doorstep via courier on Wednesday. Can't complain about that!

    • That's because no one is buying them, people are waiting months for PS4's from them.

  • Hi

I too have had my share of good and not so good dealings with Dick Smith. But shit happens sometimes :(

I'm not going to enter into this topic to any lengthy degree, only thought I would post this link in support of some comments posted a few days ago:

    http://www.australiancontractlaw.com/cases/boots.html

Basically the store has no 'legal' obligation to sell anyone anything…they 'reserve the right' to refuse a sale. Its at their total discretion.

Much as it may sound lame, it's a way to balance the rights of both retailer and customer.

Usually stores will bend over backwards to help a disgruntled customer, but its a choice, not mandatory.

I know it can be frustrating for a customer, especially when the store rep says a price or promises this or that, I've been on both sides of that scenario.

At the end of the day, the store can be nice and honour whatever was promised, or tell you to get lost :(

And as long as there was no ill dealings or misrepresentation etc… there is nothing a customer can legally do. A complaint to ACC or FT may convince the store to be nice, but again unless the store has breached any part of the Australian Consumer Legislation there is no enforcement of any promises.

Anyway, thats my 2c worth LOL

    :)

Chill out and have a nice day.

    Pookie

    • The problem is with online shopping, they happily take your money before refusing the sale, and they don't give it back at the same time they cancel the sale, at least in this case.

      • Update: 04/07 - Thought I should mention refunded after waiting 1 week!

That's perfectly normal, it takes a couple of days for the payment to clear down their end and it will take a couple of days for the money they send to clear as well.

Add in a day or two of administrative time and that's not a lengthy wait at all, it's not their fault we don't have real-time settlements.

        • It's not the customers fault that they refused the sale after taking the money.

        • @Grillman: How do you suggest they give you a refund at the same time they cancel the sale if it's not actually possible to do that given the constraints of our transaction settlement system?

        • Then they should make it up to him in another way.

  • All sound dodgy. Your account and your brother's credit card? Your mom's account and her credit cards? Emm…

  • Might be a bit OTT, but it annoyed me..

Dick Smith and Star Track Express sent my PS4 just in its own box, with no packaging around the box so my PS4 box is damaged with scuffs and rips and they also stuck all the postage details, invoice, a map for the courier driver because apparently they struggled to find my place in a small town and a sticker with "non-conforming mail" on it, too.. Pretty careless and unprofessional, I would say.

Even I make sure when I send items that they are well packaged so that nothing can get damaged and I'm not even running a business. They were able to send the extra controller I bought (which is obviously of lesser value) within another separate box so why not the PS4.. :\

I see it that I've paid for something and the box is included in the purchase/investment and they've basically mistreated and defaced it, plus if I plan on selling it in the future, a damaged box diminishes it's value somewhat. I was expecting it to come within another box with padding around it to protect the PS4 box and the actual PS4 itself.

I also think that it's probably against protocol to send things where anyone can see what it is. Some sort of privacy breach? Thankfully the PS4 itself is fine but don't think I'll be buying from their eBay store again.

I don't know whether to bother taking it up with them, to go through the same thing again.

    • I do understand where your coming from, esp with these courier guys handling it (it prob roll around the back of the van). I dont know how big a ps4 box is, but perhaps they dont have a box big enough to fit the ps4 box?

      • The PS4 box is pretty small, only 48cm in length and 10cm in depth, so a bit smaller than say the size of a box that a DVD player would come in. It's just negligence on their behalf.

DSE online is one of the worst websites ever. I did a purchase of a sale item that was a reasonable quantity. Order dishonored. Talked to a former DSE employee who acknowledged that employees hoard items that go onsale to deny the public the sale items. He also admitted theybuy sale items to later put on Ebay.

  • My order from Sunday 20% off sale turned up on Thursday.
Was very quick. Only 4 days so I was very happy.

I am posting this after getting a response from DSE ebay store. Just before the 20% off sale I put a Samsung tv in my cart as it was $1399 then just before the sale it went up to $1592. I sent them a question as to why it went up and why the price was different from the DSE website which still had the price at $1399. This is the response I got which shows that they put the price up specifically for the 20% off sale and also showed they had no idea as to the terms of the sale and had no idea there was a price cap and the rice they thought it was claiming to be was not correct. I am going to submit an ACCC complaint as it does show they put the prices up. The tv then went back on sale on both the website and dse at the reduced price.

    Thanks for your enquiry,

The advertised price of $1399 expired to make way for the 20% off sale on Sunday, which made the TV $1273.60 down from $1592.

We do regularly run exclusive sales on our eBay site, which means that the price in-store and on our website may be different.

    Thank you for contacting us!

    • dicksmithonline

So given the discount was limited to $200 price would have been $1392 which at the same time dse had a 5% extra online sale which and since the tv was still at $1399 it had a final price of $1329. o not only do they not have any idea what they are doing their so called exclusive offers on the ebay store were worse than their normal site and they admit to jacking up the price for the sale. I don't care if the ACCC do nothing I am still going to put it in and I encourage others to use the above information to do the same.
