Cygnett Universal in Car Phone Holder $7 @ The Good Guys

23

Found this in-car phone mount when browswing around to find a cheap one. Harvey Norman is selling at $14 and Dick Smith at $19.95. I tried to go in store to Dick Smith today for a price match, but they wouldn't accept it! They said the cheapest they can offer me is $10, so I reckon $7 at The Good Guys is a pretty good deal for this.

  • The issue I have with cheapo universal holders = the suction cup. After a while they just don't stick anymore -_-

    • They work all winter for me. First hot day parked in the sun, the plastic softens and it fails.
But once you get a good seal, the suction thingy stays on for months. Try spit.

I've found sanitising hand gel (eg. Aqium or Dettol) works brilliantly for keeping suction cups on el-cheapo mounts stuck to windshields!

      • I've always thought that you should put it on a hot day so the amount of gas to volume ratio is lower.

Gas expands when it's heated and whatever gas is still left inside the suction cup so if you apply it on a cold day, on a hot day the gas inside expands and thus the suction cup fails. Conversely apply it on a hot day and the volume of gas will remain the same in similar temperatures, and contracting gas on cold days would improve the suction.

  • Rekon it can be used for a Note 2?

  • if you search ebay you can find this generic holder very cheap http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/IP068CM-360-Windscreen-Mini-Car-M…

I had this. Not recommended. The weight of the phone on its own makes it wobble badly, because there's no way to tighten the joint. The spring mechanism ended up breaking completely in the heat.

    • Agree, not sure how this design was approved by a name brand.

  • Sorry don't recommend this brand either, my one turned to crap when we had a heatwave :(

  • Reviews say this mount is terrible.

I am going to neg to warn people this is a pretty poor product.

Suction cup seems good, but the hinge is rubbish.
Personally I had to pull mine apart and jam paper in it to have it stay in place.

I was using with an iPhone.

  • i have this aswell, it just wouldnt damn stick after like 2 uses, frustrated the hell outta me and i threw it out of the window.

  • Though price is attractive, I paid $15, but Mine lasted less than 3 week

  • Can anyone recommend a cheap, unobtrusive iPhone car mount? I had one from Kogan but after 2 months it melted the plastic and the suction came off, got a replacement from Kogan and same thing happened after another 2 months. Gave up.

  • I've had three of these suction type ones, no name brands, they've all been terrible. Mostly they don't stick, or if they do it's a temporary thing.

  • ok-ish price but mine warped/melted in summer. Now has no suction. But when it was working was ok i guess.

  • I bought the Kensington mount (Windshield + Vent attachments) for $7.98 from DS on sale last week. Very happy with the quality as its sturdy and feels solid. RRP is $39.98 and hence it was an awesome bargain at $7.98 and 2 Years Warranty.

  • I suspect a lot of these car mounts are simply repackaged versions of cheapo Chinese ones you see stalls sell in the middle of shopping centers. They're a lot cheaper on banggood (which also has free shipping from China) if you're prepared to wait.

Based on the other comments here the quality seems to be similar too but if it cost $4 last at least half a year then good enough in my opinion. Ideally you could play $20 and get one that last forever but seems like even the expensive ones here don't do that based on the anecdotes here.

They use to have a lot more so maybe I'm using the wrong search terms.

  • Hmm, looking at the comments, I guess there's a reason its selling for $7 now? There's also another model that sticks to the airvent insteasd of using suction cup, but price is more expensive, $22 @ TGG. It's selling at $49.95 at HN and $39.95 at DS though, so still a decent deal from TGG. Would this model be better compared to the suction cup models?

  • Sorry maybe i wasn't clear with my earlier statement..but my model was a more expensive one than this deal
it still melted in the heat [STAY AWAY] :)

I bought a Samsung original to replace it (but it hasn't hit Summer) so at the moment i will recommend that, heaps better quality and cheaper than Cygnett.
