Flights from KL to London return (to SYD?) mid Sep-late Sep (plus, how to get Arsenal match tickets?)

Hi fellow Ozbargainers,

Looking for some assistance here.. I'm trying to find a reasonably priced (note: not necessarily cheapest) fare from KL to London (don't care which airport) departing between the night of Sep 13 and Sep 15, returning around Sep 27 so I can get back to work on Monday Sep 28. I am intending to book to KUL on AirAsia before these dates from Sydney, and I would be happy to book a return but if there is a cheap flight straight back to Sydney I would take that too, but I do plan to be in KL for a couple of days before London.

I am definitely flying with my mum who is 60+ TO London, but may not be returning with her, so for her sake I am considering taking a business class/premium economy fare up, and if I fly alone on the return I am happy to fly economy class.

What I have looked at so far:
1) The awesome Etihad deal posted a few months back - can't find anything below $1000 for my dates. Also, not keen to go through so many stopovers with my mum. If I was by myself then no issue.
2) KL-London return economy w/ transit: I saw some one way tickets on Vietnam Airlines for $450ish with a stopover, did not check the return but these prices no longer seem valid.
3) KL-London return economy w/o transit: $1200ish return on Malaysia Airlines
4) KL-London return premium economy w/ transit: $2650+ on China Southern (codeshare w/ Air France?).
5) KL-London return business class w/ transit: $2700ish on Sri Lankan Airlines - comparing this to premium economy above, no brainer as to what I would pick. Kuwait Airways also appears
6) Sydney-London return economy: $1900ish with Malaysia airlines with transit in KL (I actually would not mind this, but I would like to get out in KL for a few days on the way there..)
7) KUL-HKG return with HKG-London on Premium Economy redemption: I would have to pay for KUL-HKG (nothing below $250), and my dad was intending to help us redeem HKG-London using Asia Miles points (probably Cathay Premium Economy for about 72000 Asia Miles if anyone is familiar with that)
8) KUL-HKG-London return on redemption: as above, but 108000 Asia Miles points instead
9) MEL/BKK-Stockholm: Too many stopovers and didn't really consider exploring Stockholm. Also worried that it is a little risky (connection-wise).

I am happy to consider the option of possibly stopping in another city if it is cheaper, as this is a family euro trip and we will most likely be travelling around a little bit out of London anyway.

Does anyone have any ideas for me? Planning to book soon.

SIDE TOPIC (Football - how to get tickets to watch Arsenal?):
While I'm in London, I would like to buy some tickets to watch an Arsenal match. Ideally at the Emirates, but not compulsory. I've heard it is very hard to get tickets and you actually have to be a member to even have access to buy the match day tickets. An alternative is to buy off a scalper on the day, which costs $200+ AUD for a ticket?
Also having a look at the fixtures..
13/9 Man City H
20/9 Aston Villa A
24/9 Capital One Cup ?
27/9 Tottenham H

I'd love to go for obviously the Man City match or the North London derby, but my dates don't quite fit in. Certainly not for Man City. Anyone have any ideas on firstly how to obtain tickets for either the Villa away game or the home games? I'd be happy to go Birmingham for the Villa match. I suppose I could extend my leave for a little longer and watch Tottenham.. and in fact, I will probably do that if I know I can get tickets.

Thanks in advance!!

Can't help you with the flights but I have an Arsenal supporting mate who asks around gunners supporters groups on twitter and facebook, he usually gets sorted out that way. Failing that, get down early for the city or spurs game and try your luck with the scalpers :)

    • That's a good idea. Thanks!

  • Have a look at Finnair. Think they fly via Hong Kong to Helsinki and then on to London or major cities. You could also possibly use your dad's points I rang their Sydney office and could do Bkk to Vienna , daytime in economy then Business, night flight , back from Dusseldorf to BKK for AUD 1900. I prefer the long unbroken flight rather than break it in Middle East airport

I know this may not be of direct use but worth investigating. Have you looked at Norwegian Air and maybe sending your mum business Class?

You could also ask on Australian Frequent flyer. They are a really helpful group.

Does Air Asia fly to LHR? Would there be any carrier to go to Manchester or Dublin and then get back to UK?

Might need to use ITAmatrix and search all carriers . It is a most useful tool.

    • Bangkok to Vienna that you mentioned using points is with which airline? You have Asia Miles too?
Yea I think a long unbroken flight (on business class at least) would definitely be preferable to a stopover in the Middle East, unless you get business class on both legs.

I have looked at Norwegian Air but as I mentioned in my post above, one of the reasons I don't wish to pick that routing is because I am concerned about connections + I did not really plan on going Stockholm… and, it would probably be one too many stopovers: KUL-BKK-ARN-LHR - I would prefer just one stopover + it is not a huge saving if taking their premium class.

Just had a quick look at Australian Frequent flyer. Looks like it would be a useful site overall, never thought of using them though. But it seems you have to pay a $29 fee for someone to help you out with an itinerary which I think I can do myself (given that I have done a bit of research already).

ITAmatrix.. have not heard of them either. Just tried using it but it doesn't seem to be as user friendly as the likes of Skyscanner and Kayak.

Thanks for your help though! I did see your post for the Malaysia Airlines deal though and that is amazing for a full service carrier.

  • Also cant help you with flights.
But have a look at the official ticket exchange. Members or season ticket holders can sell their tickets there if they cant attend the game.
It is safer but you only find more tickets available closer to the day.

If you are finding it privately, its best to meet directly and swap the ticket/money. Never send money through anything, a friend got scammed this way.
    (Just like gumtree here basically).

    Good luck

    • Alright, I will definitely take a look at that. Yea I wouldn't be confident using something similar to gumtree for this sort of thing. Thanks!

  • There is a special flight SYD -KUL return for just over AUD 500 this week end only. Have posted it on deals for today.
