Melb -> Sweden One Way Only $486 Jetstar / Norwegian Air with Dreamliners + *Nonstop Flights!

1360

*** By nonstop flights I obviously mean the two individual flights are nonstop since commercial aircraft on the way to Europe from Aus have to refuel. The stopover in this deal is in Bangkok ***

Been doing quite a substantial amount of research for one way tickets to London so I can go back to Cambridge and work away; although I stumbled across this amazing deal.

Flying out of Melbourne with Jetstar on a non stop flight to Bangkok for only $219 (select dates) on a dreamliner 787.

From Bangkok, you can fly to various places in Europe although the cheapest is Stockholm for only $247 USD (~$267 AUD) with Norwegian Air also on a dreamliner 787.

Example dates:

MEL -> BKK on the 23rd of October 2014
BKK -> ARN on the 24th of October 2014 (stop over time in BKK ~12 hours).

I paid the extra $7 to guarantee an (a)isle seat with Jetstar but am taking my chances with NA since they charge the insane amount of $42 USD for seat selection.

So with my $7 (a)isle seat on Jetstar I'm going to Sweden for $493 AUD.

Remember to pay Jetstar with direct deposit or paypal so you avoid service charges.

Sounds like a pretty good deal there thanks! I'd hate to think how much a ticket to Stockholm would usually cost!

    • I flew to Helsinki in January this year and it was just shy of $1600

EDIT : but that was return not one way

  • +1

    Crazy good deal.

  • +6

You're pretty safe with 12 hours, but what happens on these sort of mixed-airline deals if the first flight falls through or is delayed enough that you miss the connection?

On more than one occasion I've had to fall back on an airline to sort something like this out, and it only worked because both inward and outward flights were on the same ticket.

    • travel insurance

      • +9

        does not cover this normally

    • +3

I had Cathay cancel a SYD-HKG, and Qantas a LAX-SYD flight. (And for the LAX-SYD flight, the in bound MIA-LAX flight was almost 2 hours late, I would have missed the LAX-SYD in anycase) Both had to be rescheduled to the next day. So 12 hours might not be enough, especially with the LCC

  • +4

    How much to get home?

    • +54

if you pay $7, you'll be on an isle apparently so you can't really get home unless someone comes to save you.

      • +3

Had to read that 4-5 times before I got it

      • +3

        Haha typo's ftw :)

Not even going to correct it because I laughed at your comment.

      • +1

A $7 Isle is my new home

        • +2

          i'll drink to that.

        • +17

          isle drink to that too.

        • +1

          and that was the joke……

      • +1

Isle save you. Now which I'll will you be on, that's the question?

        • +1

Aisle be there… wasn't that a Four Tops hit back in the 60s?

    • +5

      Stockholm to Bangkok $244
      Bangkok to Melbourne $196

  • +5

This deal has been around for good 6 months now you gotta love Long Haul Low Cost Airlines :) They also connect to Florida and NYC if people are interested in doing a very cheap RTW ticket.

People should also note that you will need to claim baggage and enter The Kingdom Of Thailand at Suvarnabhumi airport then recheck-inn for your onward flight. There is also an 11 Hour + wait in-between flights

    • +8

Someone should post a <$1k RTW deal!
      @TA Airways?

      • +1

I had a go at planning one of these previously, easy to keep it under 1K until you reach the sector that crosses the pacific to come back to Australia. One way fares on that route are upwards of 1K by themselves.

        • I tried a few months ago and could only get it to about $1500. Was an entire RTW on budget carriers. To cross the pacific i did a LCC from Mainland USA to Hawaii then Jetstar HNL-SYD/MEL/BNE when Jetstar had there Hawaii airfare sale.

          SYD>KUL
          KUL>BKK
          BKK>LON
          LON>NYC
          NYC>HNL
          HNL>SYD

          Would be a fun trip

    • which airlines connect to NYC?

      • If using this deal, Norwegian fly to NYC from Sweden for $245*

    • People should also note that you will need to claim baggage and enter The Kingdom Of Thailand at Suvarnabhumi airport

Oh and that means you have to pay the Visa fee for the Kingdom of Thailand…
Last time it was around 10 $ or so I think..

      • 30 day Visa on arrival stamp is free

  • +1

I'm assuming this isnt a return ticket, but still a good price.

  • +1

Luggage not included on the Jetstar flight

    • +2

Nor the Norwegian by the looks of it.

      • +1

Yes this deal is still good even if you pay for the baggage.

It's more aimed at back packers etc. I'll be going with 10kg worth of luggage in my backpack and staying at my cousins house in Sweden then flying to London for like $50 :)

    • +2

so probably $550-$600 after food and luggage… and $1100 to $1200 return
also, need to pay 2 nights accommodation(1 night each way) & no frequent flyer points

I bought something similar in 2012, and missed the second flight due to flight cancellation on Jetstar, they upgraded me to the next available Qantas flight for FREE at the airport because of my issue, but still missed the second flight and I didn't buy insurance…

It's risky to travel transfer flight from different carrier, need to go through the immigration out & in and check-in again.

  • +1

Sounds like a great deal, thanks

  • +1

    Fug Australia's far away…

So got to buy a ticket to Bangkok then another to Sweden x 2 (return)

Where's the special? With Jetstar to Bangkok or the dreamliner to Stockholm?

  • +1

    awesome deal

  • +1

Please specify one way or return OP

    • +2

      Lol? I don't get it?

There's HEAPS to do in Sweden.

      • -5

Like what? Tours of the Volvo factory?

        • +4

Clearly you have never been to Sweden before.

        • -5

No, but I've been told by someone from Sweden that's there's not much to do there.

        • ROFL. That's like me being a stereotypical 20 something year old currently living in Canberra.

"There's nothing to do in Canberra! GOSH!"

Seriously, experience it yourself mate. My cousin earned approx. $500k a year and moved from Perth to buy a house and live happily ever after in Sweden with this hottie he met there and he absolutely loves it.

        • +15

But there really isn't anything to do in Canberra…

        • +1

          It was a joke… Because I live in Canberra…

          I think we're done here.

        • +7

          They have OzBargain in Canberra?

        • +3

With 500k a year even Canberra could be a paradise

        • +1

Anyone enjoying Canberra must have Stockholm Syndrome. Hang on,can you catch that in Sweden? Is it contagious?

        • Are you the prime minister?

        • 500k = 300k after tax. Still want to know what kind of job pays that kind of money?

        • +1

drug dealing. property. mining, engineering. some sort of exec role

          though calling bullshit on thisone

        • They have the internet in Canberra??

        • Pretty sure it's the NBN epicentre

    • +18

What to do in sweden? Scandinavian blondes would be a good start.

      • -6

I already met a couple here in Melbourne before. Why do I have to go all the way there for that? Plenty of them come here all the time.

      Couple of Stockholm suggestions:

    • +5

Then go somewhere else? i do not understand why people continually complain about great deals posted on OZBARGIN. if you think you're better then a deal then ignore it. You sound like haters on youtube videos.

After using this deal to get to Sweden….Airfare from Sweden to
      Poland $12
      Germany $30
      UK $30
      France $30
      Belgium $30
      Finland $33
      Croatia $36
      Greece $41
      Spain $41
      etc

  • +4

I do this kind of thing quite often (though within asia not onward to europe)

Just last week I had a 3 leg journey where the jetstar flight was the middle leg.
I had already arrived from my first leg, and got an sms from jetstar saying the flight would be delayed by 12 hours (apparently not long enough of a delay for them to provide a nights free accommodation).
Anyway I got a refund and booked an alternative flight with another carrier to arrive in time for the 3rd leg of my trip.

Make sure your laptop/mobile is fully charged when doing this kind of thing as you might well end up stuck and having to find some alternative flights at the last minute.

  • I too do this kind of thing but usually budget out/into Aus and then full service for the rest. For those interested in this one, just be aware that Norwegian Air is a budget airline.

  • -2

Have I missed something or is the title very misleading? It says "… + Nonstop flights", then a disclaimer in the description & talk of a 12hr layover. How is that possibly nonstop?

    • Have you ever been to Europe? Lol!

It's currently not possible for commercial jets to fly non stop to Sweden from Aus hahahaha.

      • +3

        Actually, it is possible.

According to google, distance from Darwin to Stockholm is 7754 miles:
        https://www.google.com.au/search?q=distance+darwin+to+stockh…

        7754 miles is 12479 kilometers:
        https://www.google.com.au/search?q=7754+miles+in+km

According to Wikipedia, the longest-range variant of the Dreamliner "can fly 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,700 km)". Presumably the variance in range depends on how much weight (i.e. how many passengers) are being carried, and on the prevailing headwinds/tailwinds (yes the airlines do take full advantage of these whenever possible).
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_787_Dreamliner

Even Sydney to Stockholm is possible, but at 15591 km, you wouldn't fly in a dreamliner, you would be left with practically no fuel in the tank and no safety margin. You would go in a 777, which has a range up to 17372 km:
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_777

        • If it's "possible" as you suggest why can't I get a one way ticket with no stops from Sydney to Stockholm?

I guess you're right and every single airline in the world is wrong when they need to stop and re-fuel.

        • +3

Because at the moment, long-haul flights are dominated by economics. You would be unlikely to fill an entire plane with passengers if you did fly Sydney to Stockholm, the way it is currently done gets more passengers and is therefore more profitable, so that's what the airlines do.

Also it's more expensive to fly non-stop. The long-range versions of the planes need larger fuel tanks, and the extra fuel increases the take-off weight. Fuel weight is roughly half the take-off weight for a dreamliner, it's not insignificant. Lifting more weight = burning more fuel, your efficiency goes down. Or you can lower the take-off weight by reducing the number of passengers, and be less profitable. As there is plenty of competition and aggressive discounting, the airline would be placing itself at a commercial disadvantage.

Where airlines DO think they can fill a plane, they DO fly non-stop. Qantas flies Sydney to Dallas/Forth Worth non-stop, and at 13,804km, that's longer than the Darwin to Stockholm example I gave above:
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-stop_flight#Currently_sched…

Singapore Airlines flew Newark to Singapore, a distance of 15,343km. That route was run from 2004 to 2013:
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Airlines_Flight_21

        • Fair enough.

As stated the stop over is for refuelling.

    • +2

It's just a slight misuse of the term, but the description clears up any confusion.

Of course, a better description could just be 'Two non-stop flights', or 'one-stop journey' or 'transit in Bangkok' etc.

Technically speaking, the term 'direct flight' does include stops (e.g. A - C, stopping at B on a single ticket), but it wouldn't apply here because different airlines and tickets are involved.

    • Video description would go like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9cNtrrCP0E

  • September last year I flew to Paris from Sydney for $1020 on Qantas. =))
    This deal is great though!

  • Can someone send me the dreamliner link?

Also can i go to some other part of Europe instead of Stockholm? Been to Sweden. Boring.

    • -1

There we go - finally someone else that agrees with my comment.

      • +2

Chicks there are hot but extremely introverted and not fun at all.

Landscape is flat. Norway for landscape, Eastern Europe for girls.

        • Plus, the girls in Sweden have very deep masculine voices. Not my cup of tea.

        • I thought you said you haven't been to Sweden?

Generalisation is the best! Especially if you haven't even experienced it for yourself haha.

        • +1

Better than Aussie chicks though - skinnier, blonder, and less of a bogan attitude.

  • I'm a little confused… WHERE is the deal? Surely not in the Jetstar website as they don't fly to Europe.

Link to the actual website for booking this would be good instead of linking to the Jetstar main page.

    • -1

hahaha you're not alone. scroll up and you'll see people having to read 5-6 times to understand the deal.

So Jetstar from Melbourne to Bangkok.

then, you'll need to go to Norwegian Air's website for the second part of the deal and that is

      Bangkok to Stockholm.

      Google Norwegian Air. =D

      Cheers.

      • -6

Thanks. So… when does this deal expire?

There's almost no information in this "deal". Tempted to neg it not because it's a bad deal but because the OP has not put the most important information (deal website and expiry date)!

  • +3

Sweedish Chef… who could forget? http://youtu.be/B7UmUX68KtE

    • In Sweden he was called the Finnish Chef

  • It probably should be noted that it isn't this cheap outside of October. BKK -> ARN is usually $400+

  • That title just sounds scary, one way to Sweden. I guess its a good thing and Id find my way back. Pretty cold place imo

    • +2

      'sok just bring a jumper

  • -1

Any alternatives? Rather not go to Sweden, prefer Norway. And think most people would prefer to travel earlier like August / September.

  • I had a Seoul to Osaka flight delayed by a snow storm - therefore late to depart and arrive by over 2 hours. Missed my Jetstar connecting flight to Australia (checkin closed only 5 minutes before I got to the counter - they wouldn't budge).

Had to claim insurance for the night accommodation at the airport as next Jetstar flight was in 24hours.
Luckily insurance paid for my flight in the end as I decided to take another Jetstar flight in the morning which was to a different Australian city (I just wanted to keep moving, not be stuck in an airport all day and night).

YES make sure you have roaming enabled or an overseas sim card, and battery life!!!!!!

  • Could someone confirm if I would need a transit visa for Thailand for this route? I am living in Australia but don't have an Aussie PR.

    • +1

What passport are you traveling on? Need more information

      • Pakistan

        • If you are a resident of Pakistan and traveling on a Pakistani Passport - You will need to get a visa before traveling to enter Thailand as your countries people are not aloud to get visa on arrival, or 30,90 day visa free entry to the Kingdom Of Thailand.

You are also not aloud to enter Europe(Schengen) without a visa because you travel on Pakistani documents, You would need to obtain a visa to board your flight arriving in Sweden before traveling.

If you are eligible to an Australian citizenship and therefore an Australian passport i would highly recommend it as your freedom to travel is greatly increased.

Holders of a Pakistani passport can visit 32 countries visa-free or with visa on arrival

Holders of an Australian passport can visit 167 countries and territories visa-free or with visa on arrival, and Australia is currently ranked 6th in terms of travel freedom

        • I look forward to the days when our borders cease to exist. After our war with ETs, of course.

  • -2

Screw it. Deal is too complicated. Probably only worth it if your in Melb.

  • -1

Sydney return to Melbourne - about $130
Melb to Bangkok return - $600 (mid Sept - mid Oct)
    Bangkok - Oslo/Stockholm - $650 return.

All up around $1400. So much for $486 one way.

    • Sydneysiders can put their $100 tigerair vouchers to good use for this?

    • It says one way from Melb, not Syd, or is the title not clear enough?

Also, read the above comments you can actually get back to Aus cheaper than the cost of getting there.

      Stockholm to Bangkok $244
      Bangkok to Melbourne $196

      • What dates? The cheaper ones have been sold out.

        • Look on the airlines website… https://www.norwegian.com/en/ http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/home

September,October,November all have flights under $290 from BKK - ARN Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays. There are also flights from BKK to Osolo,Norway on Tuesday & Thursdays

If you are from Sydney then use Air Asia X, Scoot or Jet-star for a cheap flight to BKK during September,October,November, where then you will overnight in Bangkok and check-inn, connect on to your flight to Europe.
Its pretty simple booking otherwise go to a travel agent.
