      Moskau?

      • +3

Seriously what’s wrong with Moscow to visit? So weird, so many people go after Russia for attacking Ukraine which I also condone btw, but visiting one of the culturally significant cities in the world should be okay.
I don’t see you lots boycott when USA bombs civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
I might never go to Russia anymore but i just hate hypocrisy.

        • +3

I would love to visit. No problems here.

        • +1

I mean, I wouldn’t even want to travel there now. Even if I didn’t care for US atrocities, border security is even more of a pain now than before.

        • I agree. ive never visited either and I dont think id visit russia right now either on principal but id visit russia before i visited the US

        • How is it hypocritical? I'm not saying to not go to Russia but the fact remains that I can go the US and criticize it's government and fear very little for myself compared to going to Russia and doing the same.

        • I visited Moscow (and St Pete) one month ago and it was one of the best cities I've ever visited. Clean, safe (to me), and everyone was super welcoming.

        • You condone Russia invading Ukraine? Why?

        • I mean if you want to go to Russia you really.need to write pro Russia stuff like this on the internet.

Also… Most people hate the USA… So its pretty hard to claim hypocrisy as an argument.

        • So how exactly is it "culturally significant"?

    • +2

I think there's only one bad one!

Paris, by the way. But it's obviously entirely subjective.

    • Which one?

  • +21

It's absolutely insane that it now costs around a day's work to fly to the other end of the world and it takes under 24 hours.
I don't think a single person would have believed you if you told them in 1902 that this would be the case in their grandchildren's lifetime.

    • +6

Yes it is. And I don’t think our grandchildren will believe it either.

      • +6

        You guys can afford kids?

    • +16

A single person might never have thought they would even have grandchildren

    • +5

Etihad are hoping that you will buy the return flight with them too and make up for their 'low' one way offer. In my case the return leg was over $1500, making this an over $2K flight off season which is much higher than other options.

    • +2

Even crazier is I had to book a last minute flight from Brisbane to Sydney tomorrow evening. $500 one way on virgin and the grubs at Qantas were quoting $700. Outrageous!

    • +1

Wait until sub-orbital travel and we can travel to the other end of the world in 45 mins.

Might take a while for costs to come down .. but it will happen one day.

      • Dont think that will ever be cheap unless they come up with some extremely cheap and abundant replenishable fuel source (hydrogen?). Rockets cost so much because leaving orbit uses so so so much fuel.

Ive always wondered about a big elevator (think I played a game once where they have it so obviously science fiction) that connects to an out of orbit launch pad.
        Could work?

  • +3

Etihad is total shit IMO… having been scammed by them out of two 'free nights' which they then cancelled but failed to let us know this, so we arrive there anyway. Then they gave us the biggest BS run around via their phone 'help' centre. 400 bucks to Europe is a great price but the company scores less than 1 star in ethics.

    • They used to be good 1-2 decades ago. I have used them over the last few years and they were ok, last family trip to Europe 3 months ago was expensive, planes old and dirty, outdated technology, screens & remotes not working, food meh

      • +2

        yeah they suck after covid.
i flew with them last time was in 2018, was decent in business.
        now i hear its rubbish

    • -3

completely disagree IMO, have flown Etihad twice, emirates once and qantas once all this year from Aus / asia to Europe - Etihad is far superior to qantas and better than emirates - all my flights have been in business to be fair and one flight with Etihad I was upgraded to first class which was an elite experience

      • +4

No shit lmao, you paid for it. They're clearly talking about the typical experience: economy.

  • +9

Heads up. Etihad no longer offers complimentary checked-in luggage on their basic fare (which I believe this is). Pay before check-in as its much cheaper to do so.

  • We flew with Etihad a couple years ago to Egypt, and the experience was really nice. I'd personally rate them above Singapore Airlines having flown on both. Nice food and some nice gifts for our kids etc (mind you we were in economy class). Comfortable seats and polite staff as well. Despite being very long flight, it was a nice experience.

    • I can’t compare them. For me Singapore is the ideal distance from Australia and Europe as a stop over, and the airport is so comfortably large.

      • I wasn't comparing airports mate. I like Singapore airport and the airlines as well. Just my experience with Etihad was nicer compared to Singapore Airlines. You can't go wrong with either of them.

        • +1

I was noting that it’s more than the airlines. The airline is a small part of my choice. I choose Singapore over thd Middle East for the reasons I said.

  • +11

I believe this deal was posted yesterday by Easton (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/928239).

  • All of the Melbourne departures seem unavailable now. Did anyone manage to find any?

  • +1

Dunno what's the appeal of one way flights, sounds cheap until you think how you find the return and put one and one together.

    • +1

not everyone likes having a fixed return date

I like the freedom to go and stay as little or as long as I'd like

  • -1

Etihad is not a great ride, tbh. Consider them next to a low cost airlines. Once you add everything to at least an acceptable level, the price goes above alternative options.
EDIT: Connections in Abu Dhabi are often very good though and very efficient.

  • Flew last year family of 4 to Europe
2 of the screens did not work properly
they tried to fix them but gave up.

    • nobody should rely on airline entertainment … the quality is atrocious … ipad, tablets, noise-cancelling earbuds/headphones, phone for messaging/internet .. why use the airline junk?

      • +1

Im with you on that - great, 7 crappy movies that I wouldnt watch back home, and a game that is made for 4 year olds..
I will watch the map for an hour before I bother with any of that

    • A lot of new planes don't even come with screens. Just BYO devices and content you actually want to watch.

  • I flew with Etihad from London to Sydney this year. No complaints. Everything was good. They even delayed the Abu Dhabi->Sydney flight to make sure passengers got on it due to a late flight out of London.

The only negative is they penny pinch on seat selection, requiring a payment (on my flight) of at least $40 per leg. Singapore Airlines doesn't charge for seat selection (which I also flew with this year).

Never been to Europe before, any suggestions for the best places to visit in early December? These flight prices are pretty tempting

    • +3

Paris is pretty amazing .. even if zero interest to ever visit (like me), I ended up there and it is fantastic and impressive.

      • +1

Paris is amazing but absolutely freezing in December. Prague would be my second pick but again definitely not in December.

I guess it depends on what type of holiday you're after @Pseudomocha but I'd trend down towards the Mediterranean if you want it warmer. Give Spain a miss though at the moment.

        • +2

Even the island Crete in Greece (an island far south) is only about 16 degrees max in the day .. might as well enjoy the 8 degrees in Paris.

          • +1

@matt-ozb: Yeah it just comes down to personal preference and how you handle the cold. I certainly did not enjoy the 8° in Paris haha.

And the counterpoint to that is the Summers I have spent in Europe are literally some of my favourite trips I have ever done.

            • @wavesgreen: Early December is prime time for Christmas markets - lots of gluhwein takes the sting out of the cold :P

It's also generally much quieter around November/December, which is nice if you're not a fan of the peak summer crowds.

              • @snep: Weihnachtsmarkt are definitely worth it for Germany but not many destinations in the list, I only saw Münich. Münich in Dec is 🥶, better to visit for Oktoberfest.

                • @wavesgreen: True, though no need to restrict yourself to Germany - also flights to Amsterdam, Vienna, etc. which have lovely christmas markets.

                  • @snep: I will keep my opinions on the superiority of German Christmas Markets to myself. 😅

          • @matt-ozb: Please don’t go to Crete, go to Paris, leave Crete for us 🥰🥰🥰

        • +1

unless you head up to the alps and go skiing

    • +1

Disregard the expected weather and choose the location that interests you the most.

    • Its inhumanely freezing in a lot of places, so make sure you are fine with the sort of temps where the snow doesnt melt for weeks.

    • We're going over in a couple of weeks and will still be there in early December ourselves.
It really depends on what you're into? Nightlife? History? Architecture? Nature?
I'd recommend visiting a few Christmas markets at that time of year - so German cities.
If you're sensitive to the cold, go south to Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece.
You'll probably not see the colours of autumn (as you're there at the beginning of winter) but you might see the first snowfall in various spots.
Switzerland is gorgeous, as are the lakes - but again, it'll be cold.
Really, though, nobody can offer sensible suggestions unless you give a hand by telling us your preferences.
Whatever those prefs are, even in the winter cold, there'll be heaps to do, but I'd advise doing just a couple of areas in a little more depth.

  • for a moment i thoguht it is return flight price.

  • Shame Etihad and Virgin’s partnership ended as I often booked Etihad flights to Europe and Africa using my Virgin points. We’ve now got Qatar, but Etihad always seemed to have good availability and quick connections. Much prefer Qatar as an airline though!

  • +1

How is "beatthatflight" to buy through? I've had trouble with these 3rd party resellers in the past.

    • They are just a referral to the real sites AFAIK. So you could just search on etihad and find the same flights

  • Interesting to hear how Etihad has apparently deteriorated. We used them when we went to Europe in 2016 and at the time I considered them one of the best airlines I've ever flown on, up there with Singapore. They even had a live premiership game on during the flight to the UK. Seems things have changed.

  • +2

Nice the single flight is cheap, but when I search return, the prices tripled or more from Syd

  • yeah its not the best. last time I got this with Etihad a bit cheaper around $400 I think and that was return.

  • Syd to Paris 🙌🏻 thanks for having this route.
