These are the best CFL lamps that I've used, and the cheapest too, for less than $1.25 a lamp. Warm white is far better than the bluish daylight of earlier CFLs. Unfortunately, Big W in Hobart doesn't have much of a range - and what they do stock is usually ES (screw base). Who uses that?

Philips now has CFLs in 45, 60 or 80 watt versions, but they're quite expensive for domestic use. The 45w one costs $25 or so. These are pretty bright, they'd equate to 200-300 watt incandescent globes. Anyway, the government stopped imports of old-fashioned globes in February and will forbid their sale in a few months. Better buy them while you can. The 240 volt halogen ones are a bit more efficient but at four times the price.

  • Yeah you got my vote. I bought 4 of these months back for the full $11 price but they are fantastic lights, I'm a bit of a Phillips fan when it comes to CFL technology but I like the chevron's even more. Simply put they are the brightest per wattage bulb I've seen. And I have tried just about all the brands at one time or another.

Chevron being an American brand (well they started out being sold at Walmart) I guess they are only edison E27 screw type. Could anyone confirm if they also have bayonet type? My house has both kinds but I currently only need some bayonets and my BIG-W is a bit out of the way for a scout mission.

    • I've bought Bayonet Chevrons when these were last on sale for $5..
Got the 23W (120W equivalent) which i don't think are made anymore..

  • Thanks click_it,

I can confirm I did see a bayonet version but it was one box of bayonets for every twenty boxes of screw globes.

Might want to check with your local Big W first.

Strangely, all my fittings are screw types so it worked great for me. The lights do have the warm glow as opposed to earlier globes that cast an eerie white-blue.

    • Yeah the 20 (or 23W i forget) Chevrons I have cast a nice warm white. I only like cool white in Kitchen and Garage (working areas) and warm light in the bedrooms/loungeroom etc. The rest of my family are the opposite funnily enough - to me their homes feel like a dentist clinic rather than a homely place you want to kick you feet up after a long day. Each to their own I guess.

  • These globes have been on sale as a "Manager's Special" for 3 consecutive weeks now for $5 a box. I wonder if BigW is phasing them out?

  • Is this deal available only in QLD, or elsewhere as well ?

  • How about vic?

  • I have called a branch in Melbourne but they have no idea what I'm on about.
    may try another store.

  • Thanks SK. Look forward to your update :)

  • Got some bayonet's today, ozgrif was correct though - out of about 30 packs, only 2 were bayonet. I'm a little dissapointed that NONE of them at my BIGW store were the spiral variety as I prefer those and also none over 18W although much stock was already gone so they probably sold out early. Negatives aside they still are an impressive bulb, they start up very bright unlike most CFL's.

I also feel the chevron stock may be being phased out. That will be unfortunate. If anyone see's the 23W in stock I suggest you GRAB THEM, I have 4 from a previous purchase and they are fantastic.

  • Got loads in Karringal, Vic Big W. Had plenty left inc spiral ones.

Thanks. One of the best bargains from a regular shop from here!

Didn't see any bayonette types, though.
