Tired of your parents/rellies/boss/colleague telling you their computer is running slowly and that they didn't do anything, only to find a ton of toolbars and adware all installed on the same day as a YouTube downloader or questionable game?

Get them one of these - an all-in-one Chrome desktop!

It's the cheapest AIO around* and is perfect for people who just surf the net, check emails, watch youtube, and can use Google Docs instead of MS Office.

Sure you could hook up a Chromebox to a monitor, but you'll end up with a mess of wires and problems like "I was vacuuming under the computer and now the screen is blank!".

Bluetooth and wifi are built-in for less clutter.

It has a full HD IPS screen with good color and viewing angles. Cheap AIOs usually have awful washed-out TN screens, so this is a plus.

The processor is a Haswell Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, 1x USB3, 3x USB2.

It also has an HDMI input so you can hook it up to another computer, TV set top box, or Bluray player.

RRP here is $599 but there's still no sign of it locally.

*not counting those large-tablets-slash-AIO like the HP Slate 21

  • Some of the Android AIO would be cheaper and with touch screen as well (HP and AOC deals for example, though both expired). However the Haswell CPU in this would be quite a bit faster than ARM-based Android, and personally I found using ChromeOS is much more productive than Android.

    • Oh yes, those … I've always considered them large tablets rather than an actual AIO. The UI was originally designed for touch rather than a keyboard and mouse, so no surprise I suppose.

I find touchscreens useful with laptops but not as useful with a desktop/AIO as the screen will be farther away. Making apps touch-friendly means large icons and buttons which eat up screen space. A device that's designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse would be able to fit more information on the screen, which should make it more productive.

I bought my mom a Chromebook and haven't heard any problems about it at all in the past two years. She was already familiar with Chrome on Windows so there was pretty much no learning curve. That made me decide to get one of these too.

      • Yeah same. Re-installed 2 PCs last week — one Windows 8.1 and another one Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Both took over an hour to install, have all packages up to date, having everything set up properly, etc. However when I first received my Chromebook it was just opening up, sign in with Google account and it's immediately usable. I would get my parents Chromebooks but unfortunately they (and their friends) are stuck on Skype :(

  • Ive been using LG Chromebase 22 and that price listed above is fantastic for a machine of its quality

  • How does printing work on these chromebook…is it 1) direct usb cable 2) wifi 3) both?

  • How is video format support on chrome OS.

I dont think 16 Gb is enough. 14gb Minus space required for chrome OS. Still its great buy for someone using it strictly for chrome.

And can i try chrome OS on my laptop without deleting windows 8?

  • This is perfect for those that just want to check emails and play candy crush (my missus lol) but she already has a samsung i5 tablet with full win8.1

    • Just get one for the kitchen. Use it as an online recipe book!

  • +2

I'm looking at buying another chromebook but then I saw this thread. I've never considered a chromebox, dunno why just used to laptop type setup but this looks very tempting.

Off to google some reviews and stuff.

Actually if you want to use MS Office it's quite easy. There are 2 ways.

    1. Google recently released a new feature called Office Compatibility Mode (OCM) and actually gives you the ability to edit Office files inside the Chrome browser. Once you install the extension you can open and edit MS Office files and then save them back to their original MSO format.

    2. Open a free MS OneDrive account and get access to a lite version of MSO.

One of the few downsides of Chrome OS is not being able to use Skype. That may be about to change. Google is planning to bring select Android apps to Chrome OS later this year. And Google is asking users to vote for an application you think would be super useful on Chrome OS. I'm voting for this.

Oh yes that's doable, but I was thinking more about familiarity with MS Office. For basic documents the learning curve is tiny, but some people just don't like change. The changes to the Save dialog box between Office 2010 and 2013 is enough to throw some people off. :)

That would be the easiest way I think!

Awesome, that's good to know. I just voted for Skype as well.

  • Cheers OP. Purchased at $384.

It has good reviews so I bought it :) Looking forward to my new toy.

    • Oh, you paid for the faster shipping?
      Mine just got shipped today!

Sounds like you'll have yours Friday?
