so with this one i can get 2gb with the $30 recharge and unused credit can go to Google play right? Wheres Bruce from oz when u need him

    • 3gb and no. It's one or the other not both or a mixture

      • has it changed? I thought activating it as ipad gave u equivalent per MB rate for 2GB (used to be 3GB)and u could use credit for Google play also?

"When activating a different Starter Pack for use on iPad plan, the included credit is a $30 $ amount rather than the 3GB Data Pack of the White Starter Pack. (That means you can use credit to transfer or buy Apps etc. Recharging should roll over credit, unlike Data Packs.) That credit Recharges at the rate of the iPad RECHARGE. That activation process has not changed - $30 credit still goes on your account, but the iPad RECHARGE rate has increased - buying only 2GB" quoted from bruce

    • Updated 2 days back at the bottom of the useful forum Telstra Sims Starter Packs Guide to Cheap Data

So now only 2GB for $30 credit if activate SIM Starter Packs as iPad device, or 3GB data pack (no $ value) if you buy white iPad Starter Pack.

If you already have iPad Starter Pack connected at old rate like I have, just keep it active by transferring credit from another Telstra SIM just before access ends - extending access to 14 days & data at 1c/MB.

      • Can the $ value be used to make phone call? What is the rate?

        • Of course. Check the forum link above for the different approaches, and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/149772#comment-2065843

        • I went to the link but can't find where it says if I activate as ipad sim, the $ value can be used for making call and the rate.

Is the answer yes and what is the rate?

        • @ongrudy:
By t&c when you activate, Data only (iPad) service (referred to above) is only data - you agree only to use in "ipad". (If you used the service for calls, you would lose the cheap data service & charge could rise from 1c (on old rate) to $2 per MB!!)

I was referring to your choice to activate as either data only (select iPad as device) or usual prepaid plan phone with $30 credit (& $220 cap with Encore) to use with more expensive data plus calls on phone. Options discussed in forum.

  • It didn't work for me last time.
I had my main SIM as Long Life. I purchase this 2nd SIM and activated it as ENCORE.
I then made 3 credit2u transfers from 2nd SIM to MAIN SIM.

Main SIM then had $29 credit which I then changed to SIMPLICITY which I then used for mobile data.
300MB later, all of the $29 credit was used up!!

300MB for $30 isn't good, and I am too scared to try again.
So didn't work for me, not sure what I did wrong…

You need to recharge after changing your bonus deal. Sorry to hear that happened. You could see if Telstra will give you some credit.

10c per MB that seems about right… maybe you should have bought a data pack… though their data packs arent really that good value

Activate main SIM as LongLife, IMMEDIATELY change to Simplicity, activate throwaway SIM as CapEncore, and then CreditMe2U $10/$10/$9 from throwaway SIM to Main SIM.

      From http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/telstraprepaid

CreditMe2U transfers of $10 or less are not treated as a recharge if there is an existing balance in the receiving account – In which case they increase the account balance at the same call or data rate as for the currently active recharge.

Changing pre-paid Offers does the following:

      1. Switches to the Call / SMS / Data rates for the new offer.
      2. Enables any bonuses that belong to that offer ready to be triggered by a recharge.
      3. Deactivates any existing bonuses that are not part of the current offer.

Your way: $29 CreditMe2U increased your account balance at the same call and data rates as the currently active recharge, i.e. LongLife plan rates.

I think any future CreditMe2U to you main SIM should now be on the Simplicity rate, if you have not switched back to LongLife in the mean time. A fresh recharge with real money should not be necessary.

  • There's a helpful new Wiki under construction… A guide to using Telstra Prepaid Starter Packs replacing the aging forum Telstra Sims Starter Packs Guide to Cheap Data - expanded to cover Telstra Starter Packs use in phone or data.

Over the next few days, I'll be plundering useful tips from these posts to make the experience cheap & hopefully easy to understand. I hope it will become the only place we need for advice on how to get the most from these Packs.

You are all welcome to collaborate :-)

  • so what happens when i activate to many under my name??? won't the government be all over me? :P

    • Seems there is no issue, so No.
How many SIMs do you have active at once?

      • well this is #3… and i think telstra MyAccount only allows 5? is there a way to deactivate it from your account?

        • Wish I knew as have plenty of no longer used Telstra SIMs that stay active for 6 months. (Handy disposable numbers for things ike online signups, selling on Gumtree, etc)

I just use more than 1 MyAccount - set up by Telstra. I use Telsta 24-7 App to view other MyAccounts on the smartphone, but you can access through each MyAccount login. Then there are quite a few SIMs still active with other telcos… So 3 is just a start ;-)

I'll have to add that to the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki!
          Added.
