The YHT-196 includes compact black gloss speakers with a feature-packed AV Receiver to deliver dynamic sound and video performance. YPAO automatic calibration and Yamaha’s SCENE function ensure simple operation while the HDMI inputs offer connectivity with the latest HD audio and video sources. The preset remote control simplifies useability by controlling TV’s and other devices, while the HDMI inputs allow connectivity to a Blu-ray player or game console. The YHT-296 is a great value and simple to use entry into home theatre.

  Note that it doesn't look like this has YPAO, or indeed, do TrueHD decoding.

  Thus it's really a lobotomised amp, compared to their more usual offerings.

    But then we're talking about a less than $300 Yamaha amp. What can you expect for that price.

      Oh I agree, you get what you pay for. Just pointing out the above description is wrong.

      However, I'm prepared to bet that the bits it lacks is more to do with differentiation with their higher priced AV amps than any real technical difference. Might even be just a firmware difference and a missing socket.

  no Dolby Digital TrueHD or DTS-HD … but cheap, hard to decide.

  Yamaha HTR3066 (identical to Yamaha RX-V375) was sold for $240 at Harvey Norman last year. I almost purchased it but could'nt justify it.

  I dont think this is a good deal.Yes you get 6 boxes (sold as speakers), but they'll be rubbish anyway.

  Would this be better than the Logitech Z906?
