  • Love to hear feedback. Sales are very quick, but I like to know what the pro bargain hunters think so please lay it on the line.

    The Microsoft Mini mouse was pretty cheap as well.

  • It compares very well on price here.

    Intel T3400 debate here and here.

    T3400 spec's here:
    * CPU Speed: 2.16 GHz
    * Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    * L2 Cache Size: 1 MB
    * L2 Cache Speed: 2.16 GHz

    ruraro, do you have an opinion on this one?

      A great price for what you get. The ASUS F5SR specifications show there's a P8400 model, suggesting it can be upgraded to a 1066Mhz FSB cpu.

  • Good price for what you get I think.
    I think this is the spec page
    http://za.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=2573&l1=5…

  • Are Asus offering the free Windows 7 upgrade when it's released?

  • Wow .. specs looking pretty good … no idea how T3400 performs … but it is better than Core2Duo T6400 according to http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist…

  • damn, I will not buy laptop from Dell again and instead wait for COTD. Well done. I bought quite a few stuff from COTD already & the service is good.

  • Can I hook this laptop to 40inch plasma or lcd screen via dvi and does ATI HD3470 can handle the output to watch 1080p resolution without any rendering issue or slowness? anyone have any idea? looks good if it does so I don't need to build HTPC and just use this laptop and I can unplug and bring to my bedroom if I need to use it.

    Edit: oh yeah, how about the sound output? I think it won't produce 5.1 digital, am I right?

    • Definitely..
      It won't do 5.1 sound.. unless you buy a usb sound card.

      • Thanks.
        What is that "1 x Headphone-out jack (S/PDIF)"? spdif normally digital right?
        will research this usb sound card and still researching about this laptop because it confuses me with F5SR and Pro50SR because both different or the same.
        Hm..almost gone but if sold out then too bad. wait for another time.

        • S/PDIF is digital out.. you will need a 3.5mm to toslink optical cable to output 5.1

          • @CVonC: Yeah.. wow!! That's a Very full featured lappy!
            I didn't even bother looking! :-)

          • @CVonC: and when you get an adapter for it is is absolutely awesome for connecting to a HT system.

          • +1

            @CVonC: Are you sure it's not a 3.5mm to Coax???

  • Just wondering.. is Windows Vista CD included in the package? or is it just installed on the laptop and CD not sent?

    ps. never bought a laptop before :P

    • It'll be pre-installed and you'll get a "recovery CD" ie not actually a MS Windows Vista disc, but an ASUS disc that will install Vista and all the "useful software" (ie bloatware) that ASUS have pre-installed on your system.

      • There's a built in recovery too.

  • Does this model have a gloss screen or matt finish?

    • Probably gloss…all the new ones seem to be gloss now.

  • Yeah, just got one myself. The $50 off for paypal, specially when you can use the same credit card is a bonus.

    Very feature rich for the price point.

  • ALMOST GONE!

    not bad , got one as well

    I bought one. I would have liked a higher resolution but 1280x800 is okay. My 2004 laptop has the same resolution but this laptop is half the price and 10 times as good.

    • The LCD quality on the F5SR isn't good. There were no stuck pixels but the colours change when looking at it from different angles. I've heard of LCDs with poor viewing angles before but I didn't think they still made those and it shouldn't radically change just from a slightly different angle. It seems impossible to get the colours/brightness perfect. My 5 year old laptop has a better looking display.

  • Got one and it's 8pm with still some left…

    • Sold out.

    • P.S. Where are the chipset drivers for XP or Vista on this model, don't see them on the site, newer laptops have Chipset listed (Intel inf update driver), I like to integrate these things into XP install, guess will have to get it from Intel till Win7 (Vista=NO!)…

      • The comment on this site http://www.linlap.com/wiki/asus+f5sr says everything inside is tied together with a SiS chipset. Linux seems to have issues with the graphics and ethernet and his friend had lots of crashes on Vista but could just be bad luck. I'll install Windows 7 on it.

        This also confirms SiS 671DX chipset http://za.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=2573&l1=5…

        • thanks, will see how XP goes, I assume it automatically recognises the chipset otherwise lots of posts of people complaining that they cannot find the driver for it heh, could be trouble… as a last resort I can always integrate heaps of driverpacks into the xp disc I guess…

  • Man I had been pondering this purchase all day. Just needed some justification in buying it. My Dell just wont give up 3 years + for some reason. oh well…

  • i just got in and bought this lappie..just wondering tho as mentioned above..is the windows 7 upgrade actually free?? it actually asks for your CC details, nowhere does it mention its free

    • It appears ASUS wants $35 for S&H.
      With this Win 7 upgrade will the Vista serial no. apply or will there be a new one? How'd it work last time?

  • good deal
    can play dawn of war 2
    pity already bought a laptop last year

  • I recommended this laptop to a work colleague who bought it, I ended up configuring it and I think it's a decent bargain for $700.

    The screen is crisp and clear, the keyboard is not bad, and overall it runs quite nicely.

    • The glossy screen is far too reflective for my liking and it has a poor viewing angle compared to most modern displays.

      There are no independent volume controls, so you need to hold Fn + F12 to turn up the volume. The default audio software displays a huge overlay for the volume in the middle of the screen that can interfere with a fullscreen game. There are some media buttons that open certain apps, I'd like to remap them to volume but not sure how.
