I have searched and cheap laptops with Full HD 1920x1080 displays seem scarce lately. The last one I bought for a very satisfied friend cost approx. $700 for 15.6" i5-4200M from this deal in Nov. 2013. Can anyone suggest whether/where similar/better value can be found now? Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. The Horize W550SU-1 looks to be the best/cheapest candidate but it is still almost $1000 including Windows.
1366x768 pixel displays appear to be standard lately with higher resolutions only available in premium models. This standard/premium differentiation provides better value for money around $500 or less and $1000 or more is needed to buy similar or better specs to what I was previously able to buy for $700 so it seems cheap ones have gotten cheaper and expensive ones have stayed or gotten dearer.
IMO, before Xmas & start of the school year are better shopping periods but I was looking for a friend and have forgone the better specs and bought the $478.40 laptop on sale from this deal
is FHD literally the only spec you need?
The last horize/clove deal seemed to tickle people's fancy.
