Might be good for those who have young ones

    They all want iPads…

    • +8

Its how you train them really, My daughter hates her Nexus 7 called a iPad, now that she has had it for a while she doesn't want a iPad lol

        • +2

Dunno if you've used an android in a while but the newer versions are pretty much the same in terms of access/ease of use as iOS.

        • +3

          @RI4V4N:

You sure? Apple product is not flexible….. I know you can't bend android….. I still avoid apple

        • +4

Android is very intuitive, and if something isn't to your liking you can often change it. You must just be "trained" to using Apple products. As user of primarily Windows and Android, whenever I use Apple products they generally feel illogically clunky and awkward to navigate/access settings to me. It's largely just what you're used to.

        • +2

          @jenna12:

Yeah im not a huge fan of having the one big button, and always having to access controls like back, via a side window built into the app.

        • +1

I got my kids Android tablets. They kept calling them iPads at first, which annoyed me.
It turns out that both iPads and Android are common with their friends, and the kids seem to be equally comfortable with either.
But "iPad" is a generic term, like kleenex or biro. So they have a Nexus or Samsung iPad.
Makes sense, because Apple was the first to sell a decent tablet at an affordable price. Have to give them credit for that.

        • @edgar28:

Not going to open a can of worms here but what do you mean by not flexible? All my iDevices are jailbroken so the surplus of flexibility is there over stock OS, but then again lots of Android users I know have rooted theirs so the playground is even.

        • +1

          @minty:

even after jailbreak, you do not have range of ways to modify the core UI and extra functions…..

not many keen to get rooted and it's still flexible, and again, not bend-able. Maybe the rooting might make it bend more……

The kids in my niece's class all have iPad's, so she wanted one. Got her a refurb Nexus 7 half a year ago with a leather case so if she drops it, will do less damage.

I gave it to her without even telling her it was a Nexus 7. To this day she refers to it as an iPad, and her classmates don't know the difference either. If they can't see the logo and just see the screen, they call it an iPad lol.

        • cant they tell the difference in aspect ratio?

you should install some android only feature and encourage her to promotoe it

all the other kids would get so confused as to why theirs cant do the same thing

    • My kids (and plenty of their friends) are quite happy with their Android devices

  • +9

don't forget to go through cashrewards.com.au for an extra 2.66% cash back on devices!!!

  • This time last week i would of jumped at this.

    • Why last week?

      • Cause that was when i was after a cheap tablet.
i ended up buying a galaxy note 10.1 3g off ebay really cheap.

  • +14
    • Can't believe I missed that. I'll add that to the post.

  • +5

BEWARE: the refurb nexuses usually come with 12-month ASUS local warranty, and you NEED it!

this one appears to be drop-shipped from overseas. And can we just says the total price in the header, and not encourage their padded shipping cost?

    • Sure thing.

    • +1

Do you? I've had my 3g 2012 nexus 7 since it was released over two years ago and I use it everyday, no issues.

      • +2

Best not to rely on one data point. Check the forums. The failure rate for refurbs has been very high.
Ah - I see you bought new, so the odds were much better.

      • Just for you guys the info: my friend's nexus 7 (2012 - brand new) has been travelled to JB hifi 3 times for warranty. Not sure how it goes now.

    • +2

I bought a refurb nexus 7 (2012 model) in Oct 2013. It randomly died. I believe it was the micro usb port stopped charging. I sent it back FOURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR times. Each time it came back to me it wouldn't charge right away. This wasnt even an intermittent problem. It took most of 4 months to finally get it back after 4 RMAs. It works now, fingers crossed. It has been for the last few days.

Of course it could've been refurbed for a different reason but it really made my faith waiver in asus.

      • Interesting, mine wasnt a refurb.

    • I agree.

I bought a refurb'd nexus 7 2012 from Centralfield Technology late last year and it would not charge. I sent an email to Centralfield who did not reply, so rang Asus customer service who said they could pick it up by courier for repair. I asked asked if I could head down to the Asus Centre in SIlverwater as it was more convenient to me. Anyway, to my surprise they swapped it for a new (but still old 2012 model) tablet.

    • I bought refurbished a year ago for 200 and it is still going strong. However, it charges slow which is a problem for the model.

Seeing these deals makes me sad that I paid $280 on launch for a 16gb…

    • +14

You could apply that logic to almost every electronic device and you'd end up never buying anything.

      • +21

        Or marriage….

        • +5

.. oh wish someone told me this earlier

  • I'm tempted to buy this but I don't know anything about nexus 7.

Mainly need it for uni, lectures, notepad, web browser. Also for Emailing and Facebook.

    Should I buy?

    • +2

Its just a android 7" tablet, of cause it can do those things just like any tablet can :)

But battery life in a nexus 7 is very good compared to cheap chinese tablets.

      • +4

Done. Price was to low to stop my temptation anyway.

        • +8

Ozbargain moto, buy first, think later. :p

        • @jv: I think you needed to say "I guess you're not studying.."?

        • @Ozdeals:

it's hope (jv is right here)- if the person study english it's a fail, if the person study other languages / technical field in uni so it's kind of acceptable/ not too bad if get it wrong?

not many people studying english in uni ……

        • -1

          @edgar28:

jv only took free udemy courses and self proclaim english literate

          LOOOL

another use of my neg button … soo sweet

        • @edgar28: Thanks for explanation, I learned something new.

    • -2

Screen is a bit tiny - go for 10".

      • Gee, tough crowd! A 7" screen is too small for 'serious business'. You will have to zoom in on documents more often which distracts you from reading and memorizing the information. If you are taking notes you will have to write tiny or be zooming in and out - do you take an A5 notebook to lectures? No, you take A4.

  • +1

Great price! Love my Nexus 7, well worth the $

  • Are they any good at emulation?

    • +2

Any Android device will do NES, SNES, GB, etc. fine. Playing just with the touch screen can be pretty annoying but you can get bluetooth controllers.

      • The more powerful ones can also do NDS, but I don't think this one's powerful enough.

  • Thanks op been looking for a good deal for a while. How do we get the 12 month local warranty though if needed?

  • Bought one also….damn lol

  • Excellent price, grabbed one.

  • does it come with 12 months warranty?

    • +7

3 months and not local it seems. Dealbreaker for me given the issues the refurbs were required for.

      • have there been problems with previous refurb ones sold?

        • +1

I bought 3…. 2 of which had to be sent back…. There were issues around the ota updates, with some wi fi machines given the 3g updates and perhaps vice versa, which bricked the machines.
Wasn't a major hassle, asus dealt with it and they've been great ever since.

      • +2

3 months is pretty bad, considering EVERYONE else offers 12 months ASUS warranty pick up from your own home. Even the official refurb sellers on eBay offer 12 months.

Depends if you wanna pay an extra $20 for peace of mind and whether it's worth it.

  • +4

Great device, plenty of storage, great battery, been using it for awhile now, but the only thing for me is it cannot direct stream mirror to my chromecast cuz its not supported.

  • Well do you see kids now days out on the road with iPads or android devices? Correct answer would be android, even companies, restaurants, venues have them, very common.

  • Nice find OP…. Just bought one

  • arghh, the last asus memopad from myer has not been opened yet. ;(

  • Bought one, thanks.

  • +1

Just bought one, don't know if I will regret this but I have been trying to find a cheap paperwhite kindle for a while and I use a GS2 to play android games so I hope I have just picked up a swiss army knife device.

  • I just spent around the same amount for a new screen for mine :-(

  • Thanks liverpoolfan! Not that I REALLY needed one, but in the spirit of ozbargain I just ordered the 3G model. Will beat the pants off the crappy chinese tablet I bought last year.

  • +3

Probably worth a buy at under $100 to those willing to risk it, however I bought 3 of the 2012 model new, a few months after launch. Within 6 months all 3 were dead, despite mostly sporadic use.

Sent them back, was provided with refurbished replacement units, of which 2 have again died from the same issue. I expect the 3rd to die shortly.

Not one of my units has lasted out the 1 year Asus warranty period, and Asus refused to repair or replace the dead refurbished units despite them dying after 4 and 5 months respectively.

TL:DR - Bargain hunters might get value at this price, but be aware of the issues before you buy!

  • +1

How does this compare to the asus memopad that was $99 a while ago?

    Better
    Worse
    Same?

    Thanks.

    • +1

A little better from memory, screen resolution or CPU, one of them was superior to the memopad. But not worth replacing a memopad for.

    • +1

A bit better in every way, but if you already have one, not sure i'd upgrade for it.
(Unless u wanna pay a bit more for the 3G).

      • Oh yeah, 3G would be the only reason to upgrade, I forgot about that being an option here.

And if he hasn't bought the memopad yet, but this for sure, provided happy with the associated risks of a refurb which I'm assuming the memopad also was.

        • +1

It wouldn't be an upgrade, my wife loves my memopad and wants something similar for herself so just looking at something of an equal or better quality for a similar price.
A bit unsure whether to pull the trigger as reviews are bad in regards to it being a refurb.

        • +2

          @treeman:

Only you can make that call. But $95 really is bargain basement price point. If you're comfortable spending more you will certainly get peace of mind knowing there are better options. But at $95 this is about the best you'll find I believe. Sub $100 I call Chinese pad territory and I'd pick this over those. Others may disagree.

I've kinda done the same thing. This is for my wife and doubles as the car tablet on long drives. If I get 12 months I'll be happy…

        • +1

          @Click_It:

Cheers got it. Hopefully all is good.

Will hopefully sell the old 10 inch one she doesn't like anymore for $50 to make some money back.

    • +2

Bear in mind that the Memo Pads they were selling were new with 12 month local warranty whereas this Nexus 7 is a drop-shipped refurb with a 3 month foreign warranty. Not exactly a direct comparison. Anyway…

Comparison Memo Pad vs Nexus 7 (2012):

      • CPU - equal performance. Memo Pad has a more efficient process technology (28nm).
      • GPU - Nexus 7 ~20% faster
      • Screen - Same res. Nexus 7 has a higher contrast ratio. Memo Pad is slightly brighter.
      • Battery - Nexus 7 has a larger battery. Despite this, the Memo Pad lasts slightly longer. Interestingly the Memo Pad lasts about twice as long on full load which probably reflects a more efficient CPU and slower GPU.
      • Memo Pad has MicroSD
      • Nexus 7 has auto-dimming, 3G option, pogo pins, probably more software updates and better aftermarket support.

Which tablet is better? Well hard to say really. The Memo Pad is a year newer so you'll end up with a much more recent construction. The Nexus 7 is a little faster and it is a "Nexus" device. If both devices were new local stock I'd definitely the say the Nexus 7 3G. This is obviously not the case. As it stands, you could go either way.

I've had my 2012 since launch, it had one dead pixel that I lost notice of after I couldn't return it. Zero problems since. Have had a 2013 model for months without issue.

Getting one of these for a permanent in car Torque and Dash Cam viewer.

    • I've seen these professionally installed in cars dash areas, while it requires a level of skill (and money) the end result looks AMAZING. always wanted to do it to my older 90's car…

      • +3

        I've done it on mine.
        http://i.imgur.com/MNjfbP9.jpg

        • Love it, top job there mate! Was it a tricky job in your sube?

        • +1

@Click_It: Not too bad honestly. The area behind the tablet is quite empty when everything is removed. Works a treat with a USB DAC.

  • +2

Man I'm getting a bad run with these.

1st unit too over 20 hours to get to 80% battery charged so I returned it.
2nd unit takes about 8 hours to fully charge and going to return it today.

After doing some research I came across a good article at xda and they do have charging issues, not the charger but the tablet itself and is a known issue.

Also a lot of people say they have problem with refurbished units and upgrading the os some have bricked device and required to be returned to Asus to repair.

    • Have you tried using a shorter cable? Mine charges much quicker using a 10 cm cable.

      • +1

i think im destined not to own a nexus, second one cant hold a decent rate of charge.

with OEM charger and cable i get just over 800mA into the tablet rather then the rated 2A (2000mA).

with samsung galaxy note 2 charger (same out put of 5v and 2A) i get:

        1st = 1000mA
        2nd = 356mA
        3rd = 450mA

with the samsung charger but with OEM cable i piss poor 320mA.

i think ill see what else theyy can offer me with 3g or third times a charm.

        • When you're getting <500mA look under Settings>Battery, you'll notice it states Charging (USB) instead of (AC). The device for some reason doesn't detect that charger as a coming from the wall, and is a common feat with many chargers and phones. Example I bought a 2.1A iLuv wall charger for use with my nexus 5, though only charged at around 300mA (charged my moto G at around 900mA). Think the issue for me was the charger was made specifically for apple products and not fully compatible with android devices. Quite a common thing with USB charged devices unfortunately; think they'll all charge the same, but apparently not.

        • +1

@beaver2233: this is the oem charger, regarless of what I used it would always have a different charging rate and to co firm it was indicating charging ac and in some cases not and was a low current and I am not happy about that.

I retutned it and got a tab 3 8 and no issues at all. 2 samsungs tablets and 2 samsungs handsetsand all winners.

  • +1

Can't believe people are buying refurbs electronics…
Anyone who has returned electronics to get it fixed knows that it will have continued problems more often than not.

    • +2

Thanks I think I'll stay away.

    • -1

most electronics these days are kind of "refurbished" even the "brand new" stocks.
they take most of the parts from old planes and recycle/reuse them in the devices

      • +3

I was wondering why I have a random ''entering pilot cabin is an offense' sign on the back of my Nexus… Sheesh :/

        • I am getting sick of the seat belt sign and the crew calling light.

have a look if you are interested
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEPDgSUCVbw

        • Got it. Big difference between recycled metals and a used broken Tablet that has been opened to repair or had software tinkered with.

  • +2

I was annoyed when I missed out on the recent $110 deal so I snapped this one up, thanks for the share.

Will take my chances, this is mostly for long distance car travel for the kids. My wife may use it sometimes. Here's hoping it lasts. Have had 2 (NEW) ones fail in the past so my expectations aren't too high but if it makes just 1 x 7hr drive more peaceful I'll consider it paid off.

  • Good deal, I bought two a few weeks ago off ebay for $117 and $100 via an auction.

  • +2

Awesome prices but 3 month warranty is the killer for me. 2nd gen refurb dropping in price quickly in the US too, so only a matter of time before that hits our shores.

    • 2nd gen will be superseded soon. I like second gen, cm11 + slight overclock = snappy with reasonable battery life. The next google tablet if the rumours are true I don't like that much

      • +1

That's why they're becoming cheaper. Just a little more patience and the precious will be mine. :)

  • Anyone know if you can stream sites with this device?

  • Cool 2 year old tech for $100.

  • Order is "on request". Let's see if they have enough…

  • Had anyone returned stuff to them under warranty? What was the experience like?
