    They are getting rid of the stock because the new one is coming?

    • +1

      maybe.. but it's already missed one anticipated announcement date.

    • People have been asking that for several months now.

    • I'd say it's a safe bet that there will be a new Apple TV model by the end of the year.
      The current 3rd gen unit has an old A5 chip and is well overdue for an update. It makes sense to include it in a Holiday 2014 announcement.

    Is this the way to get IPod games onto a big screen, or is there an easier way?

    • +2

      AV/HDMI adaptor?

      • +1

        At $50 for just the adaptor I cannot be bothered.

  • At this price, I'd rather buy the amazon fire tv. Apple TV doesn't do that much anyhow, unless you really want to mirror your iPad or iPhone.

    • If I have a large library of local content (e.g. iTunes library) how do I use Amazon Fire to view it? Seems I need a intermediate device (like a Kindle Fire) in rode to do that…

      • +2

        You can use Plex to view your iTunes library. Plex have an app for a whole lot of devices, and smart TV's (I run plex on 4 year old Samsung smart TV, no need for any other device).

        http://plex.tv/

        Can run on Samsung or LG smart TV. if you don't have one of these, cheapest option would be chromecast. also an app for Roku…

        • I already have an Apple TV, I was just trying to respond to Ronnie's preference for an Amazon Fire when that device seems less useful :) But thanks for the helpful info all the same, much appreciated.

          @gokhanh:

          The Amazon fire tv can do a lot more than what the apple tv. You can't choose your own apps on apple tv, some people like using xbmc which you can't on this apple tv. Also you can use the fire tv as a console and emulate old games. Saying it's less useful sounds like your ignorant of what the device is capable of. I have an apple tv too, but yeah if I didn't already have one and was looking for a similar device, I'd get the roku or the fire tv.

    • Not so - you can play anything off any local iTunes library (home sharing). You can also watch Netflix / Hulu.

    @chywala.
    Can be don't with AirPlay function/setting but I've found the wifi lagg is really bad/slow.
    I'd say don't bother.

      I have my modem next to the TV with Cable Internet wifi speed test at 45Mb/Sec Ipad 2 and there is still delay for fast paced games e.g Zen Pinball. It is fine for angry birds type games but seriously there is enough delay to make playing asphalt 8 or other car games etc unusable. It is great for mirroring and letting other see what you are playing.
      In terms of a media server it is excellent with mp4 files.
      I also have plex app on ipad and it works fine.
      Netfilx via appletv is very nice.

    can't really see much difference between an apple tv and a HDMI cable, another than the wireless features.

    • +2

      Wired vs. wireless, I'd say that's a significant difference :) Unless you're fine running a cables between your computer and TV…

    • Sitting on my bed with a remote compared to having to figure out how to control my computer remotely so I can swap between Netflix and Hulu. I know it is possible to do what the Apple TV does with a computer setup, but why bother? I am not a fan boy of Apple, BUT their Apple TV is an absolutely amazing product.

  • AppleTV will be replaced - sometime. There are rumours that the next generation will have access to the App Store and if thats the case, I will finally upgrade.

    A word to the wise, this AppleTV3 cannot be jailbroken. People have been waiting for ages for SeasonPass to be available for it but sadly, that has not happened, and thats why I still have my 2nd Gen AppleTV and why people are paying stupid prices for the AppleTV2 when they can get it. And no you cant have mine.

    Airplaying from ipad/iphone is fine. Its just a bit of a nuisance, although I often use airplay to watch iView and other catchup channels

  • Is this online only or i can buy in physical store to get the same deal?

  • Can you airplay from a macbook to an Apple TV?

    • yes apparently, though I've not bought an Apple TV yet. I want one, but I don't want one if they're going to release a new apple TV in a couple of months time.
