People using private bins (industrial skips) as public dumping sites

Hi everyone,

To say the least, I'm quite annoyed as recently the amount of people dumping their crap in our industrial bin is getting (profanity) ridiculous!

We pay a few hundred dollars (can't remember the exact amount) every month (get it emptied 2-3 times a week). But no matter what we do people are dumping their sh*t everywhere! There's a used toilet sitting next to it, a mattress, rugs, shelving, tvs/tv boxes, dining tables and it's costing us to get rid of the crap. We have locks on the freaking bin but people just cut them off/dismantle the damn bolts. It's a freaking joke.

TL;DR people are dumping their sh*t in my skip and I'm annoyed because we have to pay to get rid of it.

Have tried to secure it, didn't work, they dump around the bin, so much so that it becomes a god damn hazard and the company that we hire won't empty it because they can't get to it.

I mean why don't people at least ASK if they can use it? If it's a large item then offer to pay a small fee/whatever it isn't free for us to empty it so why should the public get to use it for free? In fact, we barely even get to use it. It's a pain.

/rant over.

Any advice guys? Thanks in advance, and as always, I hope you're having a good day (at least better than mine) :)

EDIT: This isn't at my home, I guess I was so mad when I typed this I forgot to mention it's where I work not home

Cordon off the garbage area as private property and put signs up stating that people dumping stuff into your skip counts as trespass and legal action will be taken. Mention fingerprints and video evidence.

(note: not a lawyer, but this might serve as a deterrent to would-be dumpers).

Though I think confronting (or to put it more in a more benign way, 'discussing') with your neighbours (whether they be businesses or residents) to ensure that know that the bin belongs to you and you're paying hundreds every month to have it emptied and that it is not a public dumping site.

Most people would understand IMO — the only issue is that the people who dump there may not neccessarily be repeat offenders and are just random pedestrians who thought 'cool, a public garbage dump, lets dump our couch there next weekend!'.

Install a security camera, and mount it nice and high so it's difficult/impossible to vandalise.
It's the only way you'll stop the people!

      • +3

You have NO idea how creative these whackos get. we installed one of those round ones, so you can't grip it. a ceiling, they got super creative, and stacked a bunch of stuff, a ladder and used some sort of hook to get rid of it. It was expensive as hell to replace too.

    • +4

No, we have put signs and things up, approached people who are in the middle of dumping an entire bed frame and they're still like "F you!" + racial slurs etc. From what I gather the people who do dump there know exactly what they're doing, they're just A-holes.

Makes me want to punch them in the face.

      • +5

Get their number plate details and report them to the police!

      • Get some one some security camera bush one are very good get number plate and any detail off rubbish. Call cop and local council we had same problem. i would if you can bring your bin inside if you can. Can post few photo of site might be able mate work my local council give you some tips.

  • +7

People seriously go to the trouble of breaking bolts/locks off just to dump some rubbish? lol Damn.

Maybe you could camp out at night and leap out at anyone who tries to dump any trash at your bin (or ask a big scary sounding male friend or relative to do it for you lol).

    • +2

looks like a fitting role for "Oscar the Grouch". Time to hit Seek.com!

    • +4
    • +4

People also go to the trouble of taking one apple, eating it, then "hiding" the core under other items. ITS AN APPLE its like 20cents!

We did camp out a few times, had a guy threaten us with a bat. I felt like running him over with my car

      • Dude, you need to get out of that neighbourhood. It sounds rough! lol that apple thing is pretty funny though (in a wtf kind of way). That really is just taking the piss out of you guys. Jerks, huh.

        • It's not so bad during the day, gets pretty bad at night though

        • Running away from the area should not be the solution for this issue. I have seen this has hapened in some areas. When it start getting bad all people move away from the area leaving it to get worst. We should think of ways to stop the bad behavior instead of showing the blind eye to them. Doesn't matter how far you run away from the problem if everybody think that way the problem grow bigger and bigger and take over the entirety leaving no place for you to run and stay away from the problem.

serenity does nothing but bottle it up….

You might as well say hoochie mumma.

Try putting putting up a sign stating this area is monitored and trespassers will be reported to the police.

Otherwise move the bin somewhere else.

    • +1

We have put up signs before, it doesn't work, they ignore it/pull it off. It's in our parking lot area with an enclosed area specifically for the skip. We had to make the area for the skip to secure it, making sure it doesn't roll anywhere.

  • +10

We had the same issue, lucky we moved the bin near cameras we have installed.
We provided the Rego of the car doing the dumping and the police issued them with a $600 fine for dumping, we also put up a sign informing people of the fine amount and it has since stopped.

    • +1

I think the area we are in is just dodgey. I see people dealing all the time >< But I didn't realise the police would even get involved, we called them a few times over people threatening us/stealing and stuff and they don't bother coming down.

  • +4

Yep put up trespassing signs and illegal dumping will be reported to the police. Have some very visible cameras (even if they're fake) and a nice big sensor light.

    • +2

This. I think placing some kind of sensor light is a great idea and the brighter the better, also the sings and cameras as well (can be fake)

      • People will vandalize these, as stated above, we had a great camera, until they torn the thing down! Will discuss with others to see if it's worth trying again. People will probably just steal the lights T_T

        • If you get decent flood lights they can be hung from you're house, but I don't know the layout of your house or where the skip is. It's just as I said in a below comment, instead of going "I caught you don't dump", or something (like with cameras or just catching them) be like I caught you dumping now a lot of people know (like with an alarm or flood light\bright light).

Then call the cops, every time it happens call them, each morning report it, keep reporting it, so if something does happen, no matter what it is you have a paper trail

        • @Annoying Source: This isn't at my house, it's at the place I work

  • I used to work in one of the big retailers. IIRC our storeman got written up by management for piffing an orange at a skip while someone was reaching in (can't remember if they were dumpster divers or dumpers). Poor fool got a huge fright, jumped up and hit his head on the lid. He then complained to head office on the lines of assault.

If they're cutting up locks I doubt there is much you can do beyond the camera-and-report-to-cops suggestion already made. Getting this on film means they're likely to face charges worse than merely dumping, but unless you can also put a gate leading to the bin, all you'll do is deter the amateurs.

    • We had a gate, they destroyed it

      • +3

If locks, fences, and security cameras don't work - GTFO.

  • +1

like the rest said, set up some cameras, one in an area non visible that will be able to identify the persons numberplate and another visible up top to scare them off!

  • Camera idea sounds good. People dumping is a sympton of extortionate council fees for taking stuff to the tip……..

A tip for potential dumpers: more ofter than not your rubbish is useful for someone else. Try putting stuff on the nature strip with a sign saying "free". You will be surprised what will be taken!

    • Yeah fees might be a lot, but then there are those two times a year where it is completely free to dump as much crap on the curb as you want

      • Not in my area. We had a free pickup per year but now you have to contact the council for your free pickup per year.

      • +1

Not all councils/shires have a free hard rubbish collection. I live in Moorabool Shire Victoria and there's no hard rubbish collection. Moorabool is a strong contender in the Most Deadbeat Council competition……..

  • What about rigging some kind of alarm, a really loud one. Make then feel as awkward and uncomfortable about it as possible because it sounds like they don't care if you know about it, but what about the whole neighborhood. Because as you stated signs, cameras and confronting them doesn't work. I think rigging a light and an alarm will do the trick

  • +11

    From summary they have destroyed
    - Fences
    - Locks
    - Cameras

    Time to call the police.

    • +1

      this..

Or at least install multiple cameras so you can get a look at their faces/car regos before they have a chance to destroy the cameras. Then go to the police.

    • police
    • cameras
    • sensor lights
    • bigger fence
    • attack dog.
    • +4

When the attack dog fails, you need a good old
      Samsung TechWin sentry gun
      http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_SGR-A1

      • Oh great, now they're dumping cars. And bodies. Maybe now the police will help us!

    • +2

By the sounds of these people that dump crap in/around Pyro's bin, I'd say no to a dog. They'd only kill or hurt it.

      • Good point, plus if it's a violent dog, chances are it'll get put down :(

    • Forget about police. Police in Victoria too busy raising revenue on the roads to worry about property crime

      • Well I had a bad experience with police in Vic, was being abused by a guy called them about it and they said "is it happening right now, said no, and they hung up on me!

  • +3

    Bikies.

    • +3

What would those charity raising/granny walking across the road saints do?

  • OP, things might get worse even if you manage to secure the skip.

I once hired it as I needed to get rid of things in my apartment before moving out. I used half of it and the rest is filled with other people's shit. From couch, to TV, tables, oil tin to rotten foods.

Once things get overfilled, they started to put things next to the skip and expect me to clean them up. Almost got a fine too as things such as couch isn't allowed in the skip.

    • Well yeah, this is at a commercial site and lots of people are in and out of the parking lot but things like used toilets stink! It seems like a bit of a lose-lose situation. I mean, how would people feel is I dumped my crap in their bins at home so much so that I'd just dump it on the side so they could clean up!?

      • They dumped a smelly old toilet next to the skip bin. This is getting personal. Are you sure someone doesn't have a vendetta against your family or business?
I hope you can get this sorted out.

        • +1

Vendetta or not, those people sound a bit crazy lol. I mean, I'm not far from a pretty notoriously rough suburb and have seen some things, but pyro's neighbours sound like they're on a whole different level.

        • Yeah well we'rel not the only ones here and the dumping used to be minimal but it's getting ridiculous lately

    • +1

      Don't be a di*k about it

      • +1

who say he has one to begin with?

    • Unsure if trolling…

      • +3

You clearly haven't seen his comment history.

    • You can't be serious, right?

  • If skip has wheels, move bin inside at end of the day or keep out back and only put out front on collection day.

    • it's freaking heavy! Plus we haven't got any room inside unfortunately :(

        • +2

she's using foul language? what are you, 8 years old kid?

        • I didn't realise you werent mature enough to handle some 'naughty' words

        • -1

          lol wtf?

  • +5

You could try building a colorbond fence around the bin area like they have around maccas and hjs. That would stop people from accessing the bin… Then only opening the gates when the skip guys arrive.

    • +1

covering it so it's not visible from the road would probably be a good start.

      • It is rather large. We've got an enclosed area that was built for it, but I don't think you could chuck an invisibility cloak over it though

        • But does the enclosed area make it obvious of what it is? Can they see it from the road?

cowiie's suggestion hides the bin from the road by disguising it with the fence.

        • @Davo1111: We have buses around it so it's kinda hard to spot as it

    • I don't actually know what you're talking about, but I will look next time I'm at maccas/hjs, thankyou :)

      • Here's an image

        • Isn't it an amazing time we live in where descriptions of bins can be clarified with a quick Google image search. Technology!

        • Actually we have something like that, though smaller and only for one skip. They torn the fence down, and even when it was still up, they'd chuck stuff over the top, you'd be surprise what they can lug over the top of a high gate like that.

  • Suggestion: move.

    • our entire business? Not so easy

    • that would be last resort. not their problem people are arseholes

  • Pay your local bikie gang to hang out there a few nights. Some busted heads and problem solved.

  • This is the place you work? Complain to the landlord or the company you paying rent for the place and have them deal with it. At our remote office shared with other tentants I had to go in after hours and decided to park my car in the parking spot of the other tenants (after hours so all spots clear). As soon as I got out of my car, the freaking motion sensor floodlights lit up and a recording played over a loud speaker saying I was tresspassing and that security and police were called and for me to vacate the area immediately. I knew it was fake recording as I knew no security were for this building but it was still effective in making me move my car from this nice middle spot to our company's allocated parking spot to the side close the wall and rubbish bins.

But from the sound of the people in your neighbourhood, "dealing", tearing signs off and ripping the security camera off, gheez I don't think anything will stop them short of the police or a couple of bouncers as even a lone security guard may get beat up. What happened to the recording of the first camera that they tore down? Don't you have the perpetrator recorded on video before it was torn down?

Another suggestion is to install a wireless motion sensor camera and even though the perps will destroy the camera, you will have the video evidence recorded on your PC wireless within the property. Give this video to the police, post on youtube, news sites, tell OzBargain, call Current Affair, etc. Mass publicity shaming them.

    • Yes we did, sent it to the police, haven't here back from them. Actually, I don't know if it's legal to publicly shame people

    • Your video recording will probably not be admissable as evidence. Perps win again!

  • +2

You need to set them up

    1. Put up a fence again
    2. Leave said bin and fence open and put up another hidden camera in an advantageous position that does not show bin or gate, but perp is likely to lug things past
    3. Next time they dump stuff in it, take it out, put it in a public area close by that is out of view of the camera, and lock bin and fence
    4. Delete footage from camera where you relocated junk to said area
    5. Report to council about someone dumping things on the pathway / street etc and hand over footage of said perp lugging junk past the camera
    6. Let council take him down

You need to get your hands dirty against someone like this.

    • awww man, that doesn't sound very legal.

This is terrible of me, I know, but I hope that one day they fall into the bin and it shuts on them and they can't get out.

      • I'd do much worse to them if I was you, you're too nice =P

        • I'm not too nice, I just don't really want to break the law. Going through ways of hurting them in my head isn't breaking the law, i.e wanting to run them over with a car etc.

What would you do to them then?

        • +1

          @pyro love bird:

Follow them home and throw the stuff he dumped back over his fence. If it repeats, do the same again but pour pool acid all over it first, would like to use fire but that would be arson =P

Though this would be back in the day prolly 5 years ago, used to hang out with people from tougher neighborhoods and used to get into all sorts of shenanigans. Knew some people who would've probably run them over with the car without hesitation if in your situation, then beat them up with the bat =/

        • @Serapis: You and I need to be friends. As my name states, I'm a bit of a pyro, so you can go ahead and chuck that back, and I'll light it up :D

Back in the day? how old are you? 80?

        • @pyro love bird:

lol partners in crime yeah? I'd come over to WA to help but would have to wait for another Tiger Air sale

I call it 'back in the day' because I had a totally different personality back then… more tame now

  • +1

    Get rid of the bin.
Pretty much the only solution imo.

    • That is a pretty clever idea. How did noone else think of that before lol.

Pyro, is there another location you could keep the bin where it's more locked up (like within a property or fences or something, not near your family's business)? It'd mean you have to take your rubbish out to wherever it is, which would be a pain, but it's probably a better option than having to deal with everyone elses trash too..?

      • It's actually not right next to our business, there is a locked up area but it keeps getting destroyed. There isn't any place inside that we could put it thanks

    • Where will we dump our stuff? I actually considered this, but empty boxes, goods that need to be thrown out etc, start piling up really quickly. Smart suggestion though

      • +6

Just find another business in the local area and dump it in their skip.

  • Put the bin inside a lock up shed… and roll it out on bin days?

  • Unfortunately for you case, it seems it's too small for the police to care. The best solution is already mentioned above, to move the skip indoor. Perhaps you can find another company that supplies skips with castors wheel, I have seen many but they are plastic wall.

I don't think the camera footage and public shame is good idea. These crooks, break your locks to get to your bin, I don't think they would care. If it doesn't deters them it might result in property damage.

Just out of interest, what kind of work does your company do? Any concern over people actually going through your rubbish rather than using your bin? Is your rubbish any useful?

    • No, it's mostly rotten food/boxes, so it's really no use for people to go through the bin, so unless someone wants to smell like death and get sick I don't recommend going through the bin. It's just using it that annoys me as we end up having piles of rubbish that we can't get rid of.

It is, and I think that they get call-outs around the area pretty often. We had a guy attempt to rob us and even then the cops took half a day to turn up.

  • Are you able to have it taken away for a little while? If it disappears for a little while people might recognise that it is gone and go elsewhere.

    • The "a while" part might take at least a month before anyone things it's gone, but even then, they might just come back. And I don't think we could last that long without a skip, where would we dump our stuff?

  • +1

Sounds like you're running an Asian green grocer. If so, is it possible to dispose some of the rotten food/boxes at the wholesale market? Some green grocers I've dealt with manage to get by using several wheelie bins instead. Or dispose of the rotten food in wheelie bins before the boxes become smelly and flatten/tie the boxes for recycling.

    • I don't think we could just use wheelie bins, there's no way it'd last us a day let alone a month! We do have the boxes for recyling/if people need packing boxes but they pile up really quick!

  • With all the suggestions i think some tough love is in order.

I'd say ambush them with some off food and make a run for it, or drive by throwing…..

it is really either put up with it or get back at them you have done everything possible within the law and now i guess you have to go outside the law to put an end to it.

    • I quite like this idea, but I think that getting caught doing that and getting a fine/whatever isn't really worth it. I'd love to leave a bag of rotten onions outside their house or in their car, but it's not particularly legal, unfortunately.

  • Hire a security officer to guard the bin for a month?

Collect evidence and you need to be persistent in reporting to the Police every time.
