COTD "Pressure Cooker" Sale - ASUS Eee PC / GHD Hair Straightener for $199 + Others

3128

Hi guys, COTD is having another sale similar to a baitathon, this time called a Pressure Cooker (very appropriate name :P) Its on midday 25th of August, at the moment there are two items: GHD limtited edition straightener at $199, and an Asus EEE PC at $199. I'm not sure which model it is as it doesn't state, but I believe that is still pretty cheap.

Keen to see what other items they are going to have, and how the servers will go this time. Not an offer for the faint hearted!

Modedited title, added expiry date, corrected category and edited description.

Mod — Marking this as highlighted deal to avoid duplicates.

  • It's probably going to be the Asus EEEPC 701 SDX (with the soldered ram). 512mb ram, 4GB Hard drive etc. Not as good as the SD, where you can upgrade the ram to 2GB max.

  • +1

If we all sneakily vote negative, maybe no-one else will here about this, and their servers won't crash :P

  • $199 for EEE is an absolute steal though!

  • nonono……it's a 'catch'

  • meh, if its the soldered ram its not really a steal, still an ok price though.

  • why would u spend $199 for a straightener???

    • I have no idea, but I don't think it changes the fact that so many people want one, and this price is great.

It seems a lot like your paying for the brand name. What would I know though, i'm a guy :P

    • you would be surprised, some girls are obsessed with straightners. When i got my hair straightened (as a 'gee-up) the girl gave me a half hour speal about how this was the best straightener. Ceramic plates, digital temperature control etc etc.

    • Because its a much better straightener than the cheap ones…think Rolly Royce vs …some crappy cheap car.

Also they retail at around $320. And I'm not too sure how COTD has been able to sell them at this price - normally registered retailers have to agree to sell them only at a set price (kind of the way iPods are sold).

People should be aware, though, that GHD refuses to honour warranties on their products unless they are sold from a registered retailer…and last I heard, online retailers did not qualify (unless they also had an actual salon etc).

"We are also unable to honour any guarantee where your styler has been purchased from an unauthorised distributor; in this instance your consumer rights would lie with the point of sale."
      Taken from http://www.ghdhair.com/au/customer-care/faqs

      • Incorrect. It is illegal for retailers to have to "agree" to sell for a fixed price. It is known as resale price maintenance.

        http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/322982

        • hmm i wonder how apple gets around price fixing on their ipods….??

          • +2

@Davo1111: that's the beauty of selling your product to both the public and retailers - they sell them for x amount to retailers, y amount on their website direct to the public, and there's only a little wiggle room there - clever kids!

      • +5

You are talking about price fixing, and that is illegal.

In any situation regardless of what the clueless manufacturer decides, we will provide our members with full replacement warranty, including option for refund.

We sourced the genuine product and are giving our members a good deal - and we back up our members purchases, that is all there is to it.

        • GHD IV Styler usually comes with a 2 year warranty will GHD uphold this due to the fact that COTD is not a registered dealer or will COTD be responsible for the warranty for the 2 years ?

  • correct me if i'm wrong but the eeepc won't have soldered ram because it has windows XP which means it's the 701SD and not the 701SDX?

    • to QQQ, is it without the soldered ram?

  • Two more items:
    Nintendo wii $199 (100 units)
Nintendo ds lite red mario edition $99 (100 units)

  • Any word on the exact model of the Asus EEE PC? Would like to check some prices. Wonder what else they will have for sale.

  • eeepc up first

  • The sale has started (early?) with the eeePC up first - it's the 2gb surf, so not really that great a bargain seen as though you can get the 701SD for around $300….fingers crossed there's some sweet deals coming up :D

    • really crap deal imo, 4gb SDX was sold for 220, and i bought the 4gb SD for $250 a few months ago. You can't do much with 2GB

  • i get the feeling they only have those 4 drawcard items for this "pressure cooker" otherwise they'd have advertised it. More blankets with sleeves and andrew o'keefe on the way imo.

  • +2

a blanket with sleeves?!?!? Finally something fashionable and warm enough for me to wear in public!

  • is it me or is the server still down…

    • I am getting:

Our Servers are Currently Filled to Capacity
Please Try Again in a Few Minutes, or Subscribe Below

      Hmm.

      • lol, even when you type in ur email, the server times out.

  • It is,.. apparently

  • i got up to paypal check out and then got the "servers busy" message….damn

  • what was the item on/

  • Though have been with COTD many years and have purchased thousands of items from them …

Have never been able to access when they have all these Baitathon, Birthday Bash, Pressure Cooker, tried at home ADSL 2+, at work what ever connectivity , 3G phone…. all useless!!!

The only time when I can get in the site is when everything SOLD OUT :P!!!

Hahaha… Anyone from WA have their luck?

    • I would agree with you. Never could get in during these baitathons. I now tell all my friends not to worry about those events. The last one I even took a day's leave to sit on the computer but no luck. There were several things I wanted but there must be a million people wanting it. So COTD, I am now a smart fish.

  • The eee pc

  • i think COTD have downgraded there servers again.
this is the worst it has been for a while

  • +2

Can't believe we have been bitten so many times by this gimmick and we never learn.

Nevertheless, will try again in 2 minutes. Hehe.

  • how do they sell anything on these days when no one can get on ?

  • Almost Gone eeePC

  • website is back online

  • Woo hoo!!! scartach that last post just got through. Order Confirmed!!

  • website is back, almost gone 'green eepc 2g' lolz green.

  • I still can't get through

  • I got in…but donno whether to get it or not. Is this Eee PC a good catch?

    • I can't decide either… with the Windows version are there any word processing/spreadsheet/power point type programs because I would want to use this for uni?

      • u can just install open office. it's free. just looks like a simple version of office.

      • +1

It actually comes with OpenOffice.org. I have an original 701 4G for the last 18 months. Been with me to a few conferences taking notes :)

        • I doubt you can install any word processing programs on this eee. You'd need to Nlite it first to bring down the WinXP installation from 1.5gb to 700mb, as per this page:

          http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/12/this-tutorial-will-show-you…

Problem is, the average consumer who buys from COTD is unlikely to have the capability to do this. Unless you can download a pirated copy of Windows, you'd need the windows CD and an external CD drive. Even then you'd at least need some computer skills to slim down XP.

        • grin I'm getting by with a Casio Cassiopeia A11-A at the moment for my mobile computing purposes :P

Scotty - I can actually browse OzBargains using it! :) lol But I don't recommend doing that :P

Probably not recommended for people taking notes :P … or surfing the web :)

I just use it for a bit of hobby writing (syncing with my desktop/notebook), notes and some basic spreadsheet work :)

      • Thanks guys. I already have a Dell Inspiron 1420 from about 12 mths ago for general use, the EEE PC would only be for taking to uni for weight issues :) I caved in and bought one! Will see how we go

    • I think you would be better getting the MSI Wind U100 for $429 (with the $4.95 shipping cap) with a real hard drive and proper mobile CPU. Would be good to list the actual product specs on the page COTD (for example, what speed is the Celeron processor?). Yes this is nearly half price, but add in the shipping costs, an SD card and case and it's most prob 2/3's to 3/4 the price.

      • Agreed, the MSI wind is just so much more functional in so many ways, that IMHO it's clearly the better buy of the two.

I had a 7" asus, it was horrible to type on, I couldn't fully view videos on youtube without pressing F11, and with a 4gb hard drive I could barely fit anything in there.

  • now can somone tell me which model I just bought ?

    • lolwtf?

    • I certainly hope so seeing how they havent been offered yet…lol

    • Right now only the asus eee pc is up, we have to wait till the others come up, so you have still got a chance at a DS! :-)

    • Hasn't even started selling yet

  • -5

It's not a good deal if you can't actually buy… I've not been able to access the site at all…

    • +1

A bargain is a bargain, just because you cant access the site doesnt mean other people cant.

With bargains like this, it also depends on luck… just like going in a real shop, u cant say its not a bargain if there are 200 people in front of you and u cant get ur items.

    • +1

      Sif mark down.

  • Ohhh right. Didn't realise they weren't selling the DS yet.

  • +1

Haven't reached anything except the timeout page in half an hour!

  • Yay I got on!

  • +1

Here is something fun to think about.

    2000 x $199 Eee PC = $398,000
    2000 x $14.95 postage = $29,900
Then add all those who get carry case and sd card.

and thats just the first hr.

No wonder they keep doing these.

    • +2

that's just revenue…. not profit? Nevertheless COTD still makes a killing each time haha.

      • Thats correct, it is revenue.

However they are still making money on both the items sold and the postage so it will be a good day for the COTD bottom line.

        • Considering the size and weight of a laptop…even a small one, and the fact all COTD items are sent registered, are they really making a profit on postage? You also have to take in packaging materials and staffing costs. I doubt you'd find cheaper postage for the same item. I've paid more for RAM to be sent registered.

As for the laptop, how much profit is there to squeeze out of a $199 laptop. I bet Microsoft is getting the biggest piece of pie here.

          • @[Deactivated]: I dont know how much the laptop postage was so cannot say however COTD have a contract account with australia post which gives them a discount on the retail postage price, registered post is no charge with a contract account.

They will be making money on postage however its not like they are the only company doing it, and it helps them advertise the products at a lower price.

  • COTD server not stable. It's up and down .

  • my bet is o’keefe UP FIRST! lol!

  • CotD Tweeter update: Up Next on Pressure Cooker - Visiball V100 Golf Ball Finders. $9.95!

  • Up Next on Pressure Cooker - Visiball V100 Golf Ball Finders. $9.95!
Have no idea what they are!!

    • +1

Haha! Sounds about as good as a the Deal or no Deal DVD's or a Cuddle :P

  • +2

Great! Another "Crash Of The Day".

I couldn't even access the main page at 12:45, let alone log in to actually buy something.

    • +1

Yeah, the site just crashed… right before the next hour… lol

    • LOL Crash of the Day :D

As an IT guy I am more interested to know about how much does it cost in server/network infrastructure to run a promotion like this :)

      • Do you need to have your server up all the time or can it crash without warning. If the answer is it can crash (as it happens at COTD), it will be on one of the EEE PC! LOL

  • +2

Asus says 'almost gone' but get to checkout page and it says remove from your cart bcos its sold out!!!

  • +2

Finally managed to load it…bit disappointed about missing the Eee PC but it's not the best model anyway.

  • +2

love how the server's cleared up once they found out how crap the visi-ball glasses are

  • Looks like the server has recovered, probably because no one is going to buy the "Visiball V100"!

Knowing COTD's server, it'll probably still crash within half an hour.

  • Crash of the Day. ROFL. Their servers are a joke. Why do I bother?

    • Well what do you expect? There are thousands if not tens of thousands of people refreshing their internet browsers like raving lunatics around the hour mark. Unless you are a huge company like eBay or Amazon, its not economically feasible for COTD to buy/rent servers that can handle this load all the time.

      • yeah, like they’re not raking in the $$$ enough to pay for an upgrade….

      • Unless you are a huge company like eBay or Amazon,

Well, Amazon has actually implemented a scalable server platform and charge them by the hours you use so you can scale for events like this…

  • damn, really wanted the netbook. can anyone suggest a similar one for a similar price? all i want it for is wifi.

    • I strongly suspect the COTD eee is a dud. 2gb disk space, win XP installed? XP uses up 1.5gb of space already. = no space for windows update, no space for microsoft office, open office, etc. Better to pay $50-$100 extra and get a netbook with 4gb or 8gb disk space. Or even $200-$300 extra and a 10" netbook. IMHO.

      • are any of the ones on this site any good?

        http://www.topbuy.com.au/tbcart/pc/showStealOfTheDay.asp

        • Well, not a laptop expert, but yeah, I reckon some of those would easily be better value than the 2gb eee. As other have suggested the $429 MSI wind U100 looks like a decent buy.

          • @falcine: The asus eeepc they sold for $250 a few months ago was good value (Asus eepc 4gb SD). you could add in another stick of ram - 2gb total. then add an sdhc card, and actually have a good os running. 2gb is wayy to small.
            or yes, msi wind.

    • +1

have a look on staticICE - 701sd for around the $300 mark - there may even be some surfs lurking around cheap
