Edit: A much better deal has now been posted.

There are never enough terabytes. B&H Photo Video currently has a "Instant Savings" discount on WD My Book Live Duo 8TB NAS — USD $349 + $64.90 postage = USD $413.90 delivered (~AUD $445). That's around $100 cheaper than cheapest store in Australia according to staticICE. Interesting bits on the spec:

  • 2x 4TB drives
  • 800MHz CPU
  • Gigabits ethernet
  • File sharing over network
  • DLNA, UPnP and iTunes server

Also note that B&H Photo Video's postage is not per item but per volume so the postage / item can be cheaper when you buy more. There's also this Toshiba 256GB Q Series SSD for USD $109. Postage by itself would be USD $56.20 (not worth it) however would not increase the postage if buy together with the WD My Book (or other bulky items).

  • Have to buy two to back the first one up.

Or run it in RAID 1 mode.

      • +1

RAID 1 with two identical drives won't protect you against faults or defects that affect that particular series of drives. e.g. DeathStars and the more recent Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 fiasco.

Yep, it's a nice deal but I'd never touch a WD drive again, had too many fail on me, and I'm not the only one:

      https://www.backblaze.com/blog/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/

      • That article states WD as far more reliable than Seagate… Hitachi is of course king, but they are ridiculously expensive.

        • My 1 and only Hitachi died after 1yr. It's also the only drive that's ever died on me.

a nas that has "File sharing over network"

man thats some revolutionary shit other nas boxes cant match

    • And "personal cloud storage". Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

      That's like having a four-wheeled segway.

  • -2

Kinda average $/TB value purely considering storage capacity but upvoted anyway because it's Scotty (congrats) and a good find for what it is.

    • It's a NAS Storage. Considering that, $/TB is great value!

Has a reputation of being very slow, but

    A$399 (delivered) here

    http://store.westerndigital.com/store/wdau/en_AU/DisplayAcce…

If you buy stuff they send an email offering 20% off your next order (that makes this A$320 if you want another one!). I'm not sure how much you have to buy to get that offer, but I've bought a Veloceraptor (below) and a My Book Studio and got it.

Also the 6Tb one for A$299, the 2Tb Veloceraptor Thunderbolt for A$299

and quite a fews other good deals

    • I was playing around with the 8tb hard drive for some reasons after I added it to my cart the total price $319.99.
I am trying to find out what I did to get this price

    • +3

found the way how to get it with 20% of without buying anything
any one interested I posted as a deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/156866

      thanks wfdTamar

sorry scotty to negative your 1000th deal but to make others aware of the other deal

      • +6

No problem! I've voted +1 on your deal — great find to both wfdTamar and msmhw!

  • So hows does the compare to a Real NAS Unit?

    • +1

From my reading of reviews slower and a limited set of features, but it's cheap for that capacity.

  • +1

For those who are willing to tinker a little for a better overall product, get the N54L for $229 from Shoppingexpress and rip out a few 4TB seagates from amazon. Will be abit more than this, but you can do so much more on the N54L.

    • +2

Always buy the N54L. It's always the better option. :)

      • Each to their own I think - I'd rather spend the $400, plug this thing into my network, install the auto backup software and forget about it for 2 years while it does it's thing.
