    Good old willy smith

  • If only they sold Surface Pro 3.

    • +7

      If only they sold …

    • +1

It hasn't released here yet anyway.

  • -2

    Doesn't have webcam

    • +1

      From the page:

      Other Features:

      • Web Camera: HD Webcam⁄Microphone
      • Thanks. That's a bonus news :). I bought it anyways earlier. Hope it works well. Main reason to use Google Photos to edit photos. Tablet too small. Their web version is a fail.
Also, I think this would be great when traveling.

        • +5

You'll find that it does a lot more than just Google Photos :) I love my Chromebook (Acer C720) as I've been using it for more than 4 months now. Typing on it right now and having a full-brown Chrome is far better than whatever brother you have on iOS or Android. I'm bringing this out tomorrow to prepare a presentation — slides & typing up my talk — all offline using Google Drive that syncs back when you are connected.

        • @scotty: How does this one stack up vs the Acer? Looks like Acer performs better and I can see it for $299 ?

        • +2

@drb: They should perform the same — same CPU, same resolution, same amount of RAM. However this has larger screen which might drain the battery quicker. Larger trackpad as well which is a bonus — I actually prefer the ChromeOS trackpads more than Windows ones.

        • @scotty: Bought & thanks ! replacing my trusty Asus which my daughter just smashed today…perfect timing. thanks all!

        • @scotty: I'm excited now. I'll be keen to see the offline feature. I must say it fails to work on my android nexus 5 for some reason. Even though i have turned on the offline mode.

Lets see how it goes. Only negative thing in the review for this was the screen resolution.

        • @dealonaustralia: Google Drive off-line support on Android is not comparable to Chrome at all. See this for more info. It has really come a long way.

        • +1

@scotty: Ah. Thanks a lot. That makes sense. You just help me justify my impulse purchase. I bought 2 laptops in span of 3 months :). But this is going to be handy with impusle Chromecast I bought last week for $33 something.

        • @scotty: I also have C720 for a months now. Got from Amazon and shipped it in 2 weeks. Only one concern is the screen wash out and I have eye strain every time I use. I bought blue light screen protector and hope it would fix issue.

        • +5

@scotty: what else has gone full-brown for you lately?

        • @scotty: the full-brown chrome? you may have to flush that.

  • Could you put another OS on this and would it run alright?

    • +1

Yes you can,But you only got 16G SSD.

      • Can you then swap in a 256GB SSD that goes around for $125? (Serious question btw :D)

        • +1

no its soldered onto the mb

  • I have a Chromebook Pixel which I am using as my daily driver. I find the OS pretty good I can do everything I need fairly easily without needing Windows on it or even a standard Linux distro (which it is more than capable of).

Unfortunately these cheap Chromebooks don't have the resolution. The Surface Pro 3 looks pretty nice but I can't get past that I would be getting less resolution than the Chromebook Pixel (which would kill me, because it's so glorious), eventually I think I will need to upgrade to a Retina MacBook Pro 15" because I just can't go back on resolution now that I'm used to it.

    • What's the resolution dawg?

My laptop's got a good 1080p resolution (15' screen), and now I cannot go back to 720p.

      • +1

        1366 x 768 HD
        9hrs battery
        the price

        that sold me.

      • The Cheap chromebooks are a measly 1366x768, although ChromeOS I admit scales the UI REALLY well. The Pixel is 2560x1700.

        • I would never call that measly…
especially on such a tiny screen…

Especially when the resolution is slightly lower (720p) in the standard laptops they sell in our shops.

    • +3

Google seriously needs an updated Pixel with latest i5/i7 ULV and a longer battery life. However it looks like Chromebook has gone for the low end market where most new devices come with Bay Trail or ARM processors.

    • +4

The 15" rMBP has a lower pixel density than the Chromebook Pixel at 220 versus 239. The Surface Pro 3 is 216. So technically speaking, you would actually be going backwards. Personally, I don't think you'd notice such a huge difference at all… ~20PPI certainly wouldn't be a deciding factor for me.

      • I'm going for total Pixel count (more workspace without horrid scaling) than density. 15" rMBP is just really pricey though.

    • The dude reminds me of the penguin loving bus driver from billy madison.

  • +1

    Really damn tempting.

  • +1

I'm typing this message in Chrome from a 1920x1080 resolution, Dual Core, 500GB laptop from 8 years ago

    My how technology advances…

    • +6

Lol are you even able to boot windows without the power cable connected before your battery runs out?

    • +3

      And you paid $3000 ?

    • +1

8 years ago, that means your laptop is likely a Intel Merom based, first gen Core 2 Duo which would have terrible power efficiency, run really hot and possibly weighs more than 2kg. It'd also have cost you close to $2000 as well.

      • +3

You are all amazing correct except it's a M1710 so was close to double that price

But I never really find myself in a situation that I don't have a power outlet when put my laptop down to use and sleep lasts about a week

Point I very badly tried to make is that I think people will be disappointed with their purchase a few months down the track, worth spending a bit more if your really going to use it and if not don't waste $200

Good first deal op! I really like the idea of chrome OS but I need windows applications for my degree.

    • +1

I've been tossing up about this for the same reason, you can run microsoft word and excel through a chrome app but you have to be online to use it. I'm thinking it will be okay since I'll be mainly using this at uni/home where there is wireless - and I can always tether my phone internet if I'm stranded.

  • +1

Looks like a fat Macbook Air..

    • +21

Yeah but your wallet will remain fat too

      • +1

        But your ego won't.

  • Oh this is such perfect timing for me as I was in the market for something portable with a working keyboard for school! Woo hoo!

    • +6

Most notebooks all notebooks have keyboards that work, and are portable..
Woo Hoo for technology and welcome to 2014!

Lol I guess I should have been more clear - I wanted something light and wouldn't burn a hole in my student pocket!

        • +3

I wanted something light and wouldn't burn a hole in my student pocket!

I want something that wont burn my ozbargain pocket.

        • +5

So your one of those privileged students that can afford pockets.. ;)
I purchased crazy clarks note pads for 15c and pre broken HB pencils on clearance, living off 2 minute noodles.
The only light things i experienced were menthol cigarettes i bummed..

  • Will this work in China?

    • you can search through google HK, send emails using Gmail
but you can't use YouTube, and may have trouble with other google services/features in China.

    • +1

      Will this work in China?

Machines Made in China should work in China

  • I was so tempted to buy this, until I read the comments in the Acer thread, not so practical, I recommend you guys read it

    Got one. Thanks

I am using the HP14 and a samsung chromebook and they are just amazing. If you use your laptop just for internet, emails, word/data processing or entertainment this is the device for you. It comes inbuilt with its own antivirus and word processing software that works in the offline mode aswell. Plus the 10 sec start up speed is just amazing. Would highly recommend as a second or event main laptop.

  • Just tried to buy one from my work PC but Paypal wanted me to go through that re-verification on new device crap.
Now Dick put the price up to $323.16 with coupon after I refreshed the browser. F you paypal.

  • Damn, the price seems to have been increased to $399. Was just about to buy one.

    • old chinese proverb "he who hesitates masterbates"

  • Me too!!! Damn damn damn!!!

  • has price gone up?

  • Its a pretty nice laptop with a great keyboard and trackpad, nice loud speakers. Bought one mid year sales.
Had no luck installing linux as there are no drivers for trackpad, sound, etc.

  • If anyone happens to come across anywhere selling click on hard covers for this chromebook, can you please let me know? I searched ebay and can only find 1 US based product.

  • My startrack isn't working for some reason. Does anyone know if the deliver on the weekends? And if I miss the parcel do the leave it at the post office or do they have their own storage facility like DHL does.

    • +1

Startrack just delivered mine. I don't think they work on weekends. Generally Startrack leaves it at your local post office…

      • Where are you located? I am in Sydney but my tracking isn't working so I don't know what's going on. Can't wait to get my hands on my Chromebook. I ordered mine at 3:40am

      • I wish DSE would start packaging the goods. Chromebook arrived in original retail box but address sticker on the package and some marks. Not very good. DSE is that how you would sell it in stores?

  • +1

I'm very happy with the Chromebook so far! I was thinking of creating a light Linux OS on a fast SD Card. Would it be possible to to this? Can this Chromebook boot from USB, i. e. how to access the Bios?

    Which Linux distribution is recommended?

    • I have installed LXDE Linux with the crouton script. Everything works perfectly, I even installed skype on the linux partition without any problems.

Now I'm thinking of getting a fast SD Card, probably 64GB to increase the memory. Any tips / bargains at the moment?

  • What the hell my Chromebook is in Melbourne :/ it's dispatched from Sydney and I am located 20 mins from the dicksmith warehouse.

  • I have one extra, please PM me if you want it. At cost plus postage at cost.

    • PMd

    • Interested in the extra CBook if its still available

  • Has anyone had any trouble registering their 100 GB cloud storage?? I just tried and it's saying my device is not eligible because the offer has expired for my device.

    • Was there an offer in the box?/couldn't see anything.

      • On the DickSmith website - you get 100 GB Cloud storage with the device for 2 years. I've tried to register but it says my device is not eligible. I've contacted Dick Smith who has redirected me to Google. I was just wondering if anyone else has been having the same issues with trying to register the cloud storage.

        • Is your device brand new or does it look like a repack. Display devices are put on enterprise mode and that offer is not valid on enterprise mode.

  • +1

Chromebook available in the next hour, new, cheaper than here. PM me.
