Was reading an article in Broadsheet last night and they mentioned that PayPal is turning September 15 October 13+14 into 1 Cent Coffee Day. I have contacted Paypal Australia by phone and they have confirmed it will be running.

so at what places would it be 1 cent?

    • No list has been given yet, the details of the promotion have not yet been released I only know the day, however in order to be considered for the promotion merchants need to be registered by the 8th September with Paypal so hopefully we will find out before then.

    • +1

As an incentive for businesses and customers, this September PayPal are running a 1 Cent Coffee Day. All day, customers with the PayPal app will be able to go in to any venue with the PayPal system and buy a coffee for 1 cent.

  • +7

Finally, the true markup of retail coffees is revealed!

    • My inner hipster just sighed out loud… SOL

  • +2

Hmmm, I'm thinking this could be an interesting OzBargain contest to see how many coffee you can get in one day.

  • Saw this article too, from what I read it sounded like any place that took Paypal payments were going to be included

  • +2

Is there any way to find cafes that accept Paypal? I couldn't find anything on the web and their app just pulls every single business that takes Paypal as well as ordering via Eatnow (delivery not instore payment).

    EDIT:

So far found that most likely sell coffee:

Campos Coffee - Elgin St, Carlton
    Urban Deli - CBD
    Cacao Green - CBD
    Wood N Chimney - CBD
The Little Mule Company - CBD
    Toby's Estate - CBD
    Groove Train - Richmond
    Cafe Azul - Richmond
Coles Coffee Bar - Hawthorn East

  • Can't use the iOS app due to it not supporing SMS security. Well there goes that.

  • Just noticed Broadsheet has amended it's article and take out September 15.

To participate in 1 Cent Coffee Day, businesses must be in the PayPal app by Monday October 3.

I wonder if that means its Oct 4?

  • Broadsheet have changed the article to

As an incentive for businesses and customers, this October 13 PayPal are running a 1 Cent Coffee Day. All day, customers with the PayPal app will be able to go in to any venue with the PayPal system and buy a coffee for 1 cent.

Once I get confirmation I will update

    • I contacted both of them earlier in the day before they changed the page again. I guess something is going on behind the scenes. I'm thinking they want to sign up more cafes as there aren't that many atm.

  • Deal title updated to be October 13th

  • Are paypal subsidising these businesses for the lost revenue I wonder? Poor staff are going to be exhausted by the end of the day.

    • If it is like their eBay BBQ promotion, then eBay/Paypal will wear the cost. So it's actually in the best interest of cafes to promote this.

  • only in melb?

Thanks have updated deal. Looks like 2 hot drinks per transaction, 70 venues, so at least 140 cups of coffee. Assuming, you can do multiple transactions so bottomless hot drinks.

  • ohh yeahh!
Broadsheet did a bit on it too: www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/food-and…/one-coffee-one-cen…

  • Now I can finally slow down time and space. http://i.imgur.com/wMzk7Zx.jpg

Just got royally screwed by this promotion. Went to Urban Deli to get my coffees to be told that apparently "Payal screwed us over, so we are not participating in the promotion". So don't bother gonig to Urban Deli for 1 cent drinks.

Time to raise a dispute with paypal against paypal for false advertising.

  • +1

Same thing here went to Urban Deli and got the same line 'Paypal Screwed Us Over'

    • +1

Just sent an email asking what they are going to do about their false advertising and if they are going to refund me.

    • ME too they are not doing it .. .got screwd as well … I guess they should refund

  • My wife went into Urban Deli in Exhibition St at 8:30 and was refused the PayPal coffee, saying there was an issue with the promotion. She accepted that and walked out. I just called them for an explanation, and a gentleman said they were not supposed to be on the list of stores and said there was nothing they could do about it.

Not neg'ing the deal as such as I'm sure many will get their coffees at other outlets, but the fact my wife made a special trip there from her office for her daily caffeine fix and then refused to come good on the deal irks me and deserves a neg, PayPal & Urban Deli

    • +1

I dragged my partner to my office for the same reason. Her office is a few city blocks away with no cafes in the upper north east corner participating in this promo. Suffice to say, not impressed (with PayPal).

Though Urban Deli should have known they were listed for more then a month of this promotion being advertised.

      • OP, the neg is not a reflection on your deal (and thanks for posting it), it's merely to highlight my anger at PayPal and Urban Deli, who as Olokun says, must have known they were on the list of outlets. Maybe they were hoping my wife (and others) would just say "Oh well, I'm here anyway, so here's the full amount for the coffee"…

        • Yeah that's really annoying TA for your wife.
If it helpsyou can order ahead by checking the stores through the Paypal app and it will usually state the promo is available at their cafe. As in it says and allows you to click through to "PayPal promotion" 1c Coffee once you've selected the cafe. (Sorry can't do a screent shot) Try again tomorrow at another cafe?

        • +1

          @babezaves:
Hi babezaves. Urban Deli is/was one of the stores offering the promo. Don't think she's keen on trying other places, as this is pretty close to her work. Thanks.

Also, revoked my neg as it's harsh on the deal itself. More of a gripe with Urban Deli & PayPal for this one outlet. Cheers.

    • +1

that's dodgy - Urban Deli is on the official map: https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/pos-promo#map

      • +3

Waiting for a reply from PayPal for an explanation.

        • +1

The perennial comment neg'ers are out in full force this morning Olokun. That's the thanks one gets for highlighting the issues.

    • Look on the bright side, at least she's racking up the 10,000 steps counter!

    • I've let Paypal know via Twitter and they are removing Urban Deli from the map/app.

  • Anyone went to Las Chicas – Balaclava?

I want to try to go tomorrow.

Is it coffee only or any hot drink like hot chocolate?

    • The fine print says:

applies to all hot drinks such as coffee and tea that are purchased from Melbourne cafes through the PayPal app

    • Works at Glass Merchants too.

  • I just called Earl Canteen and Kartel Express and they all confirmed that they're doing the Paypal promo. Wish me luck as I will be getting my $ 0.01 caffeine fix after lunch!

  • +1

Walked down to Romano’s @ QV and confirmed the deal with the waitress who helped me through the payment process. The owner? then asked how I found out about the deal to which I replied OzBargain :)

  • I just went into Famish'd with 2 other mates from work & we were able to get 3 Large Cappuccinos for $0.03. Gold!! The cashier put through all 3 coffees in the same transaction.

If interested walk into Famish'd (Galleria shopping centre) corner of Elizabeth & Bourke Street. They even have PayPal promo posters around the café.

  • Went into Cacao Green Bourke St and paid $0.02 for two regular cups. There is even a guy from Paypal in the shop to show you how to use the app to check out. No hassles.
FYI, you could go in the same shop as many times as you want during these two days and buy two cups per check-out.
Their coffee is not so impressive. I'm going to try Famish'd on little collins tomorrow.

  • Can confirm it works at Whyte Cafe in Glen Huntly, if anyone is in that area.

    Fixed.

    +from me

Here's a tip, don't attempt this with Location Services disabled. I tried & even though I could search and get to the Cafe the app crashed 3 times when trying to check-in & pay. Turned Location on and bam all good.

  • Just got mine at Providore Cafe at Eden Rise in Berwick. I was expecting a huge line out the door and ordered my coffee through paypal only to find my coffee waiting for me getting cold - DOH!!! They were really lovely and said to order as many as I wanted for today and tomorrow :)

  • +1

Just came back from Cacao Green Bourke St. Was denied choice of size and hot chocolate not part of the promtotion.

    Even though the T&C says

applies to all hot drinks such as coffee and tea

yeah right.. this promo just gets better and better for me.

    • Olokun, check on the app to see if they have the promo available before you go in. If you can order it online for 1 cent then do it and they'll just have to give your cofee as per Paypal. Looks like ja912son got his from the same store.
I can just picture people going nuts without coffee screaming "give me my god damn 1cent coffee" :D :D

      • +1

You can only 'check in to pay' at the locations I vistited. A bit disappointed that I didn't bump into any hired temp wearing a paypal T-Shirt so I could tell them what I thought of this promtion.

        • I saw 2 people standing outside Melbourne Central handing out flyers for this, this morning (PayPal staff?).

The side exit along La Trobe st.

Maybe they'll be there again tomorrow?

    • +2

They overcharged me. Disputing on PayPal. Stupid payment process - you don't get to see the total cost before paying! Payment 101 stuff.

      • agree same here

      • +1

Didn't overcharge me but I did notice how bad this process was. You have no control over the amount they charge you!

Great promotion to learn not to use the paypal app unless there's a large discount.

  • Don't bother going to Watermark in Docklands, because it is closed.

  • Used it successfully at Whyte Cafe in Glenhuntly, was a fairly easy process.
But agree that its not very helpful not being able to see the amount of the transaction at point of sale.

  • Got a 1c coffee from Annoying Brother, Fitzroy North. About 10 people using the app to grab the coffee. One customer paid with real coins :) They are using the Rewardle POS - http://rewardle.com/business/ so it obviously captures all your paypal details, (and other social media check-ins etc).
