Consumers enjoying Adelaide’s unprecedented petrol price war are about to get it even better, when a station offers unleaded for 99c/l Saturday 30/08/2014.

To celebrate the opening of its new service station, On The Run will offer standard unleaded for 99c/l at its Glenside site from 10am to noon tomorrow.

The petrol station, located on the corner of Conyngham St and Greenhill Rd, is the South Australian company’s 111th store.

Prices have been at around $1.35c/L or a bit lower in Adelaide for more than a month now. That's pretty much the wholesale price at the moment: http://www.aip.com.au/pricing/tgp/index.htm

How can I start a price war in my area?

  • +3

people will be queuing hours in advance i could imagine.

    • +1

This actually happens whenever fuel is discounted this much - I remember some new stories about it.

People go nuts to save a couple of bucks, end up completely block up the roads all around.

      • If someone buys 50L of fuel that's around $17.50 saving, so not too bad. But there's the risk of getting stuck in the queue for half an hour or more, or waiting so long that by the time you reach a pump the special is over.

I drive on LPG these days but when I had a petrol vehicle I would choose the lowest point in the discount cycle to refuel, but only if I didn't have to queue for more than a few minutes. Otherwise the time value of money principle kicks in.

Sometimes when I commented to friends that I refuled at the cheapest point in the discount cycle they would write it off as 'driving across town to save a few dollars'. That would of course be a silly thing to do, even to buy fuel at 99c/L. But if I'm driving right past the station on the way to work I would take advantage of the price.

I wonder how many will keep their engines running while waiting in line.

  • can anyone post the fine print?

I can see a few people doing this scheme

How many jerry cans do I need to break even.

  • What about us poor Victorians - where's Putin when you need him?

  • +1

I'm curious to know why we have such low prices for the last 2 weeks. Are the other states experiencing the same thing too?

    • +2

I wondered the same, I think the price stayed like this since the ACCC announced they were taking legal action on petrol price sharing which was about 10 days ago…hmmm

      • -2

Which is ironic because its the same system the ACCC used for fuel price monitoring up until very recently.

Because of recoptical agreements already inplace for all the major fuel distribution companies mean that the court case will be quite short and the ACCC will loose big time.

Also the reason why fuel is cheap atm, as its a quiet period currently, (as it is around this time every year) trying to stimulate purchasing

Joe Hockey: People don't drive car in SA.

    • +1

and if they do they don't drive far.

    • +1

I don't know if Hockey or the people that voted the Liberals in are more stupid.

Either way, we (apart from big businesses and the extremely wealthy) will all suffer when we or our family need healthcare or an eduction.

  • +3

I'm driving over from Victoria for this ;)

  • I've been told that petrol at one joint (not sure which petrol station though) on Burwood Rd, Concord NSW has fuel at 99c/L today as well.

    Madness.

  • The guy that runs OTR also owns SmokeMart so I imagine he is just cross-subsidising.

    • +4

There are two businesses unsuited for co-location!

The Shahin family owns the BP and Mobil stations around Adelaide. Currently there are 4 retailers of fuel here: Shell/Coles, Caltex/Woolworths, Peregrine (Shahin) and United. Hopefully Costco introduces some much needed competition in 2015.

      • +2

Some BP are still owned by Agostino and others, although they are slowly diminishing.

Caltex and Caltex Woolworths petrol stations also have separate owners, some are Caltex owned (both franchise and Caltex head office owned) and some are Woolworths owned.

There are also Liberty and Mogas franchises.

So there are 8 retailers in SA at least if you are counting lesser retailers (like united and Mogas)

      • +1

I dont think any of the majors will be shaking in their boots if Costco open a station attached to its store. But im sure we will hear about in in any of ruperts rags or aca if it does happen. This kind of moronic story is their bread and butter…I can imagine "A victory for Australias battlers"…..

  • +2

I bet people will drive from miles away just to save $5-10. And I can imagine while waiting for over an hour they will go inside and buy drinks, chips etc. Amazes me

    • +1

Yeah I'm gonna drive from NSW for it

  • +2

As others have said i can imagine the line up to save $5 bucks

    • +5

It's the principle of buying sub $1 fuel. Ahhhh, back in the days I remember when you could put $5 worth in and actaully go somewhere.

      • +2

You still can. A Prius C will transport 4 adults 100km, burning 3.5L or about $4.75.

        • +2

but… then you would be seen in a prius…. no thanks

        • +3

          My motorbike does 300km with 10L. :)

        • @nosdan:

          Stick to your expensive guzzler!

        • +2

@Turd: are you sure its a motorbike and not a scooter???

    • $5 is not worth an hours wait..

  • +6

    Madness in Glenside!

    • +2

      Sparta!

  • Damn it! I just filled up for $1.25 (after voucher) at woolworths petrol in glynde on tuesday. :(

  • still better than Sydney

Some days I just feel that they are having a price war like the telco's (whoever can have the highest price wins)

Finally dropped to 1.44 in my area… was 1.50+ the last fortnight (even north shore was cheaper by almost 5-10c for the last 2 weeks)

    • Around here it's $129.7/L for E10 and $131.9/L for ULP.
      Edit: In Sydney (No discounts)

      • +2

gosh you sydney people are rich. $129.7/L!!!!

    • Dude, where abouts in Sydney are you?

      • Hills District / Seven Hills and surrounds: 133.9c for most of the past few weeks (jumped back up to 157.9 for about a week but dropped back down again). They've also been 131.9 several times over the last few weeks - one Woolies Caltex on Old Windsor Rd, Parklea has been sitting at 131.9 before discount voucher for ages now. There's an independent petrol station on Sunnyholt Rd, Blacktown which consistently has lower prices than everywhere else (even after fuel discount vouchers are used at Shell/Caltex) and is 129c at the moment.

      • South Western suburbs of Bass Hill and surrounds: 131.9c for most of the past few weeks.

      • Ditto Inner Western suburbs like Burwood (IIRC 134c/L last week? I could be wrong on this one though).

      • St Leonards/North Shore Pacific Hwy near the Lane Cove Tunnel entrance was even 133.9 this week and last week. Couldn't believe it was that cheap in that area lol.

      • UNSW region, south of UNSW

It has been 15x for the last few weeks, almost like someone forgot to change the prices during the cycle. Finally dropping to 14x the last 2 days…

Shell / Caltex / 7-11 all the same around this region. Drove to Costco on the weekend, and was really annoyed to see almost a 15c difference in inner west

If its anything like the Krispy Kreme opening we are in for chaos!

  • This servo has an Oporto as well :)

    • And a Wendys. And a Pet Barn. Parking will be an absolute nightmare but there's lots to do once you're there.

I was walking past Glenside Hospital the other day when I heard a small crowd on the other side of the wall, chanting "42, 42, 42…"

There was a small hole in the wooden fence, so I peered through to see what was up.

Next thing, I get poked in the eye, and the crowd begins chanting "43, 43, 43…"

    • Still waiting to get off the mark to people who may think it is a 'glory hole'

Dude, I'm going to be there with like two dozen empty milk bottles to fill.

  • +2

When people queue up for these things do they turn off the engine and push?

    • I actually laughed out loud at this comment. Thanks

  • +1

Advanced traffic alert for delays in this area tomorrow morning!

      • -1

Surprised they still have product, i cant see them having more then 20-30,000L of storage on site for ULP91, very rare to see more then that.

Anyways, expect the price to rise nationally in around 3 weeks or so, my hot tip of the day.

        • -1

          Than!

  • Quite a few petrol stations around northern Adelaide raised the prices to $1.44 yesterday. Quite a few on the north eastern suburbs are still $1.31.

    • Dislike!

      • Down to 1.29 in the east from 1.30 or 1.31, apart from a couple who are up to 1.44

  • Most ones that are 1:44 are OTRs to make up for the money they lost on Satursday
