Apple Watch-anyone interested?

Apple has released a new smart watch called the apple watch. It will cost $349 in the US so I believe around $399 ish here. Anyone interested? To me it's just way too expensive

  • I'm kinda hoping that carriers will offer it as a bonus to singing a contract with iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 plus..

  • Too expensive and other than the health "apps" it has no other useful functions. Also I don't want another charging cord…

  • Wouldn't waste my time… It isn't that great or that good looking.
I'd prefer the moto 360 but it doesn't work with iOS.

I don't get the hype around the apple watch.

  • This is the first outright new product since jobs passed away.
The last new product before jobs returned was the apple newton.

Does anyone else think Apple is returning to it's past failures?

    • The difference is that the Newton was actually a groundbreaking device, arguably years ahead of it's time; this watch, however, appears to be pretty much passé.

  • I hate wearing accessories on my wrists. The only reason the smart watch could have been useful was if it replaced my phone and was waterproof. Even then I'd still keep it my pocket unless cycling or swimming.

I'm not a fan of keeping things in my pockets either but if this watch was my wallet and phone it's a great improvement. Probably need battery power in the strap among other things.

I look forward to the day I can travel anywhere in the world with only such a watch and no money. Which would also sadly mean the world has become boring and homogeneous.

    • You can do this now though.

Phones have the NFC so you can pay on EFTPOS terminals using your phone. And if you bank with CBA, you can even withdraw cash from their ATMs using your phone.

Not sure if other banks offer this service as well.

If I were to be interested in smartwatches, it'd be the Moto 360. But even then I think the market is lacking a truly great product. I'll skip the first or second or even third iterations until they can last more than a few days. Not sure I'd ever feel comfortable speaking into my watch to give it instructions.

  • I can see it being good as a fitness tracker but $400 is a hell no.

  • IT looks ugly as the Samsung's…
Moto 360 is the only choice at this stage!

apple will always be a generation behind android, this watch looks like junk

    • How do you figure that? Android OS was a direct response to iOS, apple phones have faster processors and more software. More importantly, apple phones just work. I have both android and apple products and the build quality is miles apart. For that reason alone I would buy an apple.

Its like buying a Kia Optima. On paper it has every feature under the sun, it has a great stereo, it has sat nav, it has heated seats, it has leather interior, it has a powerful motor, auto gear box, and costs less than half of what the equivalent BMW or Mercedes does.

Then you sit in the Mercedes. Its worth twice the money.

I guess if you can't see that difference, then an android phone (sorry Kia Optima) is for you.

      • Android OS was a direct response to iOS.

ROFLMAO. I suppose Apple invented mobile phones too?

Then you sit in the Mercedes. Its worth twice the money.

Assuming that's true, the problem with your analogy is Apple (mobile) products aren't.

Well yes, android was a direct response to iOS. Eric Schimdt and Sergey Brin sat on the apple board, they were privy to iOS development. Steve Jobs mentored them from early on. They got fired from Apple's board because they betrayed Jobs and apple and stole the idea of a mobile operating system. It is well documented. Android existed as a non multitouch, keyboard operating system before this date, basically an better looking non smartphone interface. Google stole Apple's ideas and changed Android to mimic iOS. That is not innovation.

The first iPhone ever was released midway through 2007. The first android phone was released at the end of 2008.

Apple products might not have a huge technological lead on Android devices, apart from slightly faster processors, but they have a massive lead in terms of build quality. The only android device that comes close is the HTC one, and that is still not in the ball park. All the other android phones are cheap hard touch plastics and shiny chromed plastics.

  • I'm of largely the same impression… apple markets jewelry, -/-substance.

  • It looks pretty ugly and thick to me. Not a fan of the shape either. >$400 is too much and the sport model is even more expensive. I also read that an apple spokesman told reporters they anticipate users to charge their watch daily. 1-2 day battery life isn't good enough imo. On a broader note, I honestly think all the smart watches that have been announced are still premature. Battery life needs to be increased significantly (>week) for it to be even remotely appealing to me.

  • Wow, I had no idea these would be that expensive. Pass.

    • An Apple product overpriced & under-featured…who'da thunk it! :P

does it tell you its time to upgrade to android?

  • one thing's for sure about new Apple product releases, neither the fanboys nor the haters seem to be able to predict its success or failure, or on what strengths or weaknesses it will fail or succeed.

  • Kinda gimmicky IMO. You would most likely wear the watch everyday for a week or two, then its going to be a dust collector. Nothing I can't do on my phone which I have on me throughout most of the day.

  • I think I'll buy one. $400 isn't a lot for a watch, I have swiss automatic watches that cost more than 10 times that. As a point of difference/gimmicky thing I reckon I would give it a go. I probably wouldn't use 1/2 the features but I'm never without a watch on.

Unlike your Swiss watches smart watches have a shorter lifespan that is greatly restricted by the ability of the lithium battery to hold a charge. After about 300 charge cycles, you may be looking at greatly reduced battery capacity and less than a full day of usage time.

You can change the battery in an ordinary watch but I'm guessing the Apple Watch is made with planned obsolescence in mind, both in terms of software and hardware. Once it dies it goes into the tech graveyard.

      TLDR
Regular watches last decades, replaceable parts
Smart watches last probably 2 years at most, cannot be repaired easily

  • The wife and I played around with one in the Apple Store recently. I was considering getting her one for her birthday but once you move away from the plastic Sport version, the prices soon shoot upwards. As much as I wanted her to have one, she just wasn't interested at all and in hindsight, I'm glad.

This thing will be defunct in a year or two…the hardware will be far too puny to run the latest software/firmware, as with all iPhones. I can almost accept that issue with phones but what do you do with a $1200 watch that no longer functions as it was designed to? Put it back in its iBox and put it on the top shelf of your dressing room?

    I think I'll give it a miss.

  • I want one, I like the features and I think it is done very well. I am happy to pay the premium for the mid tier (the sapphire glass model) I am ok with the pricing…HOWEVER I refuse to pay that much and not get a decent strap, to provide it with a IMO cheap strap and then charge another premium for a decent one is where I draw the line.

Also I do not like the current design, I currently have an LG Urbane watch and much prefer its design, I am more a round face type watch guy. I am sure I will get an Apple Watch but not until the design changes and the included strap is improved. I am happy to wait for version 3 or 4 etc for this to happen, I mean it is only now that Android smart watches are starting to care about style rather than square calculators on the wrist so give apple time too.

  • Waste of money.
