Apple Watch-anyone interested?

Apple has released a new smart watch called the apple watch. It will cost $349 in the US so I believe around $399 ish here. Anyone interested? To me it's just way too expensive

  • Why spend $400 on a smart watch when you can get a top-of-the-line android phone (Nexus) for the same money?

    • +32

they are different. one is watch one is phone

      • +11

But you'll be able to get a top-of-the-line Android watch for $250.

      • +4

When the first released Android watches retailed for about the same - no complaints then about status symbols??

        • +9

You should have called me. I am willing to complain about high priced discretionary tech any time, any place.

        • +7

The original Android watches were never $400.

          They're definitely not status symbols.

  • +7

Too Expensive and too "me too". Maybe i am jaded but i hoped that Apple would do something different here. It's tethered to a phone. The health features are interesting, but not $400 interesting, of course the price will come down but what will have happened elsewhere by the time that happens? More to that point where will Android wearables be by the time this comes out?

  • +26

Way too expensive and looks bulky. Design wise I think the Moto 360 looks a lot better

    • +1

Yes, very obviously a 1st gen product. Maybe the Watch 4 will be better value.

      • But with a sub par battery? =)

    • +1

I agree that 360 obviously looks better and stands out and i love the edgeless design, but the software is laggy as hell, I hate to say this but apple software interface has always been better..
as for the iphone 6 yehhhh ill wait for the nexus 6.

      • +1

Some parts of the interface look good, but then there's this…

      • Then there's the <1 day battery life on the Moto 360. Shame they skimped out on the most important thing. Who wants to recharge their watch more often than their phone?

        • +3

Same deal on the iWatch apparently.

    • Yeap, too bad about the ancient internals (from 2010?) and the cut off part at the bottom of the face.

  • +2

A bit of a let down for that price.

  • +10

It's as though they strapped a Nano onto a wristband and proceeded to jerk all over how good their different types of straps were.

    • Lol I love to see someone try to select an app from the Apple watch if it looks like the picture in this article. Especially someone with fat fingers (like myself) try to open the msg app.

-Push- WTH, I wanted msgs not clock… -Push- Grrr… now itunes popped up

And NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! They got to U2 =(

    • SUPLE LEATHER BAND.

  • +1

Watches are rarely about function anymore, I know I stopped wearing a watch when my phone became a essential part of everything I do. These days watches are more about statements (I'm wearing a $5000 dollar watch, I'm awesome and your not (flex)) and personally wearing one of these is not the statement I want to make (I'm 2 lazy/cool to have pockets for a phone … even though I would still have one).

    • +4

having a apple product is all about statements so this fits perfectly! :P

      • What statement is made by the 18-carat gold version?

    • +9

Hmm. My $65 Seiko automatic doesn't have much status but it tells the time and doesn't run out of power.

    • mate it can do everything a smart phone can do, and more.
      functionality is there.

      • +1

Usability certainly isn't here with that Apple Watch! Look at the navigation between apps, what a mess!

        • +4

Wow so you've used it then? Tell me more!

        • +1

@Flying Ace: I've watched numerous hands on videos and they all show and say the same!

  • +5

To be honest I think it's ugly; if I hadn't of seen the Moto 360 my mind would of been different but this certainly isn't anything revolutionary.

I also think they missed the point of the Watch OS; Android Wear is complimentary 'here's a notification, you don't need to check your phone' where the Apple Watch is 'you can do all this stuff on your wrist!.. or you could just pull out your phone'

    • I'm surprised they didn't go with a circular design but I suppose a square chassis lets them pack more electronics and sensors on board without making the watch too large or bulky.

      • But large watches are the way to go!

This apple watch looks a bit small imo…

Will be ok on a womans wrist but on a guy, not so sure how awkward it looks.

    • More like "Here's a notification, same as what your phone just notified you about."

      • +1

Except it didn't because it's still in your pocket.

    • +1

      have*

  • wow, years of wait for such disappointment. This would of been a good release for 2 years ago, but it 'feels' like 'old' technology, if you can say that about such a recent innovation.

I like the Walkie Talkie feature though haha…now we can all be CIA talking into our watches as we all did when we were young.

The Moto 360 though….cost and functionality….damn….too bad its not compatible with iOS

    • -3

Unlucky for you the internals of the 360 are about 4 years old.

    • +1

      have*

  • +11

I look forward to getting my morning train and finding it full of people who live in the poorest western suburbs sporting the latest Apple gear. Priorities.

    • +6

They spend less on rent/mortgage to have more for lifestyle. Not my choice of what to spend it on, but seems saner than paying inner city prices and being broke all the time.

      • Ha ha. I am not sure they live where they do so they can have more money for iPhones. It is because it's where they can afford to rent or they grew up in the area and like it, close to school/work etc…

    • They'll be sending their heartbeat to their loved ones.

  • I'm actually waiting for the Apple vacuum cleaner which I've taken the liberty to name it for them… I call it the "iSuck"… C'mon Apple, you know you want to set foot in the household appliances industry too ;)

    • +11

      It is available already: Dyson

      • Yup $1500 for a robot vacuum cleaner that only lasts for 20 minutes.

  • The health features will be the deciding factor.

The best polar/garmin watches retail for $400upwards

    • +1

Yes, but the best polar/garmin watches have really good GPS in their devices. This doesn't have it's own GPS, so you'd be relying on your phone GPS which is no-where near as good. Not really the same thing…

Maybe next gen. I know the next gen of Android wear devices are rumoured to include this feature.

  • +5

The worst looking Apple product in a long time, very disappointing

  • +6

Nothing innovative about the iWatch, I was expecting better, looks like they are playing catch up but wants more dollars.

    • This reminds me of when the original iPod was released, the original iPhone, the original iPad… déjà vu…

  • I watched the slashgear "hands-on" preview. It seems very nifty and well designed overall - however, only time will tell if developers will be producing great apps for it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Evsf7KI6txI

Is it worth $400? I paid $250 for my sapphire glass watch, so to me (assuming that the design is acceptable) are those capabilities worth $150?

  • Looks so ugly and cheap to me. If I saw it without knowing it was by Apple I would never have guessed. It just doesn't seem like them.

    • It kind of looks like the original iPhone, all squashed up into wrist watch proportions.

  • +4

    Here's apple's stock prices

You can pinpoint the moment when apple announced the apple watch:

And here's what the Apple fans think of it

bit of a far cry from Lg's new G watch
    https://vine.co/v/OuDIm2YOJml

  • +1

If you listen really closely you can just hear the very faint 'wheeeeee!' sound as a gleaming mega-corporation sails over the head of a disapproving shark…

  • +1

battery life: the biggest issue (deliberately kept unannounced)

    • Like all smartwatches, it WILL be horrible.
Except the Pebble - that thing is a beast :)

    • It's going to be one day battery, if you read in between the lines they emphasised 'at the end of the day' quite a few times.

  • +5

One interesting thing is how customisable Apple Watch is (from SlashGear's video), verses much simpler and clean function of Android Wear. As though iOS and Android have switched places…

  • +2

I was really disappointed by the dysmal battery life reports of the moto360 :-/. Lets see how well apples watch holds up.

    • If the battery life was any good they would have been bragging about it, since it hasn't even been announced id say its no good. I don't see the point of a watch I need to charge every 48 hours

      • 24 Apparently. But I'll be getting it. I've got the Pebble and this thing smashes the Pebble in every area, especially price :) But yeah, will be awesome.

        • It smashes the pebble in price?

  • I was considering going back to Apple for this generation of phones, but I want the Moto 360 so I might just stick with Samsung for another year.

It's such a pity the Apple Watch is square and looks cheap. Otherwise they would probably have won me back…

  • +3

    Apple Watch-anyone interested?

    No

    • +9

Oh and what is their target audience? Idiots? I collect watches, some more expensive than this, I am looking to buy a smart watch, but the features on the Apple watch is a disappointment, the new LG G and Moto watches are much better.

When apple released the ipod, iphone and ipad they were revolutionary in terms of usability. iPod and iPad wiped the floor with existing music players and phones with its novel and seamless integration. When ipad came out everyone was bitching about what the hell is it used for until people started using it and discovered many more natural ways to consume content than the standard netbook or PC.

Now this watch, all its functions have been done to death already by existing smart watches. There's nothing new there, at least in the demo. There's no bewilderment factor like the iPad. Unless they have a few secrets hidden up their sleeves, it is not going to do well. Will it tank? Probably not because of the strength of the brand, but it won't be another iPhone or iPad success story. Given this is the first initiative wholly by Tim Cook, his critics are gonna have a field day.

      • +4

        iAgree

      • +1

Let's revisit your comment in a year's time and see if you were right…

        • -1

It depends on how sheep-like consumers are. We all know the answer to that question.

        • @lolbbq:

It always amuses me that somehow Apple users are sheep, but Android users somehow are not?

Everyone has their preferences, let's just live and let live, yeah?

      • Very dangerous to just come out point blank and claim something will be a failure in the tech world. Often times makes you look foolish. How about we just wait and see?

    • sarcasm hat on

Yes apparently 100% of Apple product buyers are considered iSheep…

      hat off

Any pro Apple posts here in OZB will be negged to oblivion. It is expected since majority are possibly Android users.

      • +2

Not really, Macbook Air's are fairly favourable

        • +1

          Yes that's true.

But it's true though that everytime an iphone deal or topic comes up, 90% of posts are negative towards it like all iphone users are somehow dumber.

        • +1

@ozeebee: Consider the number one mobile browser from OzBargain analytics stats is iPhone (iPhone + iPad > 50% of sessions from mobile/tablet devices), I'll say the Apple-bashers are certainly the vocal minority here.

        • -1

@scotty: Interesting that the Apple sheep are the ones who are silent whereas the Android sheep keep bleeting and bleeting :)

  • +1

Maybe its just me, but with so much digital stuff around me, i prefer my watch to be mechanical, preferably hand-wound otherwise my daily wear is an automatic.

iWashed my i's after iSaw the iWatch.

    • +1

Its not just you - I prefer having a watch that doesn't need constant charging and has a long life span

  • Apple Watch - you really have no need for it. It's a fashion accessory - like wearing a piece of jewelry.

    • +3

Looks great with a black skivvy…

    • -1

i bet people said that about tablets and mobile phones.
it's not a necessity, but it's a smaller and easier to use device.

  • Design looks so horribly tryhard.

  • +2

I'm pretty happy with my Pebble. $150 and it's been out for years. Heaps of watchfaces and apps already. Great battery life. I wonder what the iWatch will have in terms of battery life… two days? One if you use it.

    • Me too, the Pebble is great and relatively inexpensive. The only downer is PebbleCam …

  • +1

my opinion is that there is definitely a large potential market for the smart watch market. However apple has failed to innovate on the already available smart watches.. adding a "crown" and hoping to be a success isn't enough to sway people in this age. And perhaps creating a "smart watch" that doesn't have heavily reliance on their smartphones would get them somewhere, which is where samsung is starting to head towards. And so much for fashion.. they don't look much different than the current smart watches. Hence, most of the people who would be purchasing this would of already been locked into the apple ecosystem rather than a customer using samsung etc.

  • +1

    Found this on macrumors

  • I want an iChain ? Timo???

  • I guess they didn't bother with changable extended batteries built into watch-strap.

I'm sure there are lots of Li-Po batteries that are flexible enough for the job. With 2 straps you can charge one and wear the other.

I think 2 days is the minimum for light usage. Ipads seems to have good standby didn't use an ipad 4 for 3 weeks was still holding a good charge. Can't see why their watch only can only last apparently 1 day.

    • +1

      Love that guy!

He wasn't fond of it was he.. Don't blame him either!

By the time the Apple Watch is released Motorola should already have a 2nd 360 on the way!

  • Why do idiots keep harping on about Apple products making a statement and being a symbol of status? since when is having $1k disposable income considered to be a sign of wealth? lol every cat and dog can buy a brand new iPhone via plan. It doesn't say anything about their wealth.

If having an iPhone is a sign of wealth, there certainly are lots of wealthy, pimply teenagers out there.

    • -1

you need to watch the video again, that wasn't the message, apple its not a simple of wealth, its what some buyers of apple think; the mindset that having an apple product makes you look rich and wealthy.

  • looks pretty cool, I like the knob thing and the voice control.
it has alot of stuff that other smart watches don't have, but I'd still have a serious think about getting a non-Apple smart watch if you're after the best product.

    • +1

The knob looks like hell to actually use, there is a reason why phones are touch screen and not controlled via d-pad anymore!

      • +1

The crown (knob) looks like it may be prone to mechanical failure later on. The watch isn't waterproof either, and is only described as water resistant.

        • Even the sports version is not waterproof?

Shame really, they couldve made this iWatch into something much more.

          It should have:
          50m waterproof ability
          G-shock like shockproof
          TV remote feature
          Other home appliance control capability
          Remote car start and lock/unlock
          Garage door control
          Flashlight!
At least 2 days battery charge or Solar charging

There's more features but I can't come up with them at the moment. I know it's a bit futuristic and maybe security flawed on some, but I'd pay $1000 for one if it was like that.

        • @ozeebee:

Well why not get the galaxy gear it supports car start and unlock. The only problem is the silly watch only works with Samsung devices so you can't use other android brand or ios phone.

My only concern about it is your strapping something with a large battery to yourself. Unlike regular watches that use button batteries. We are talking 250mah+ high drain battery. Other than the minor chances of a fire hazard in general with devices with lithium batteries.

Its NOT waterproof. Is it sweat-proof?. Even an $8 torch can be waterproof up to 30M by using a contact-less switch

Strapping something like that to yourself i have to say good luck.

  • +1

Not quite worth it… and also, its the first, newly introduced product at premium price. Wait for a year, prices will be lower + better updates/features + improvements. Atleast, identified issues will be better addressed by then!

  • +1

I wouldn't buy one. I wear watches as a point of individuality, and can't see myself getting one unless it becomes a necessity to use a phone and contributing to my every day life

  • +1

$400 with 1 day battery, what a joke
