Has anyone lined up the night before to get the latest iPhone? (sorry if you don't like iPhone being mentioned again)

Hello,

I'm a newbie here. My girl friend and her friends have been talking about to line up the night before in front of an apple store to get the latest iPhone. They have never done it and neither have I. I've been trying to talk her out of this but she is not listening. Has anyone here done this before and can share your experience? I'm more interested in the cons than the pros.

Their plan is to take turns to line up, and let the last person get all phones in one purchase. I don't think it's possible. There's gotta be a limit on a person can buy at a time. Anyone's got any ideas?

Thanks heaps in advance.

  • Not me. But i see at least guy camping in NSW,Sydney George st Apple store for few days now… he has a sign next to him that says something like "first ever iPhone 6" . Admirable commitment there tbh. I'm going to be like him ONE DAY when i grow some wings. He must be loaded with red bulls.

    • Those two people are from a company who created apps Alphatise. Read it last week on the news.com.au; allegedly they want to 'hijack' iphone6 release for their new apps marketing.

Win iphone 6 if you register on their webiste and wish for iphone 6

      • Interesting. Here's Alphatise's iPhone 6 page — basically they are queueing up to get a 128GB iPhone 6 to give away in a competition.

As of Alphatise itself — consumers set the price they are willing to pay and app matches them up with retailers — hasn't this been done many times before?

    • He left out the "in Sydney" part and the phrase "… maybe".

    • I think this fella is more about after free publicity and maybe appearance in TV than getting the iPhone.

Fame that lasts literally no more than a few seconds…

        • If he can sing or dance or do something out of the ordinarily, with the new iPhone in hand, he maybe in the starlight for a lot longer. Anyway, I think he can't claim 1st ever iPhone 6 because the first one was unveiled during the launch, by the CEO, he can't even claim it is the 1st commercial iPhone 6 in consumer hand, some Kiwis should have the honor, maybe 1st in Australia at most.

    • Or maybe he missed out on getting into the Game of Thrones exhibition and thought, "I'M NOT MISSING OUT EVER AGAIN!"

    His parents should be proud..

  • Haven't lined up before but the iphone releases attract many more dedicated people who will line up a week prior to the actual release. So even if she lines up the night before, I'm 100% sure there will already be a massive line and it'll be no different to sleeping in your warm bed and waiting until the line disperses.

  • Each person can buy 2.

It's good fun if you're there with mates, like camping at a mall.
I'd get there before midnight so she gets somewhere around the front, but doesn't particularly matter anyway. They have enough phones for everyone in the line last time I did it.

Holding a spot while your mate goes to the bathroom is perfectly acceptable.

    • Thanks mate.

  • ok…just heard from a mate who's Dad, yes, his Dad, lined up when 5S was about to release. He got there around 430am and wasn't anywhere near the front. When he got to buy a phone, the color he after was all gone. He saw some guy carried a big apple bag full of iPhones. Seriously?? how could they let one person buy so many?

Big apple bag full of iPhones?

Really do you know what Apple bags look like. They cant be seen thru, so anything could be in the bag!!

Just because he says its so, doesnt mean it is. They have a policy of two, so one person carrying out an Apple bag could mean

      1. Its not all iphones
      2. Its iphones but not all iphone 5's
      3. He's pissed off because he didn't get his colour, so he reads things into nothing
      4. they are iphone 5's and someone got away with it because they gave the salesperson something

If it was 4 someone broke the "rules" and didnt get caught. So if they didn't get caught, seriously?? how can they stop them!!

        thanks mate.

i don't know what an apple bag looks like. i have never bought anything from apple. to me, a phone is a phone, unless it's edible when i'm hungry and comfy to lie on when i'm tired, i won't line up either for the whole night to get it.

        thanks for your thoughts.

    • Possibly brodens1. SMH reported that scalpers already sell pre-ordered iPhones on eBay for double the price. Someone even dared doing that on OzBargain.

      1. For OzBargain-n00bs, here's the definition of broden

  • My wife and I lined up for a midnight release for one of the WoW expansion packs - Burning Crusade. The one thing that we learned from the process is that everyone there (including us) were losers… Admittedly an iPhone doesn't have the same nerd factor as WoW…

thanks. at least you two have got common interest. ;)

Holy shit. You really are a loser.

Interesting observation from a psychologist who looked at people would spend hours lining up for new gadget releases:

the willingness of these consumers to wait in line “has nothing to do with the freebies, or buying, or stuff.” Instead, people are drawn to participate in what they perceive as a cultural event, with like-minded people.

I feel very sorry for anyone sad enough to do this. Why is having this gadget a short time before everyone else does, while maying more fo rit that they do, so important to you? Something is clearly missing elsewhere.

  • Sad sad sad….. anyone who does this. save your money and see a psychologist or wait 2 months and the iPhone6 A B or C etc will be out to fix the bugs in the original model.

    • i guess different ppl think differently. the only reason i line up tonite so tomorrow morning i can resell it with 200 bucks profit each phone. i do it every year :) i can score 400 bucks overnight doing nothing but sleep inside my sleeping bag.

I've camped out all night for a bargain but never to be ripped off, I can walk into Harvey Norman if I want that to happen and all without queuing.

  • you should only camp out if:

    a: you're playing an fps

    b: you're a UN refugee

c: you're actually 'camping out' in a tent or 4wd

  • No, haven't. Why? Because it is a f.ck.ng phone and not an organ that I need cause I would die otherwise.

Video on the Chinese scalping that's happening.

  • Apple were so long in coming to the 'big-screen-phone' party, that loyal Apple fans probably did have enough of a reason to queue this time.

Some of those that I know are still 'beside themselves' even after the queueing!

  • Regarding your girlfriend, I think she isn't the one. Sorry.

The truth hurts. I know. Been there done that.

There are millions of cows in the sea to choose from.

  • what a sad world we live in!
