The problem with this camera is that you need to do post processing via their proprietary software to even import your photos to PC.

    • +1

yep and then have the risk of not being able to view them in 5yrs time

  • +1

At this price, it could be used a dashcam in the car?

    • +1

Not sure if you're serious or not, but I think the effective resolution would probably make it useless for any numberplate identification.

    • +1

At this price, you could get 3 dashcams

    RRP $449???

    Like 200 years ago LOL!

    • There should be an ARRP - Adjusted Recommended Retail Price value, that factors in age and technology change.

  • Very tempted, but then I went to dpreview.com and checked out reviews. Folks don't seem terribly enamoured of this camera. Still, $110 (it's $109.95, not $109) is a nice cheap price, even if the device is a bit of a gimmick. I tried Sydney postcodes on the COTD page and was offered free shipping. Thanks, OP.

A nice cheap price for mucking around would be $50. Go ahead, waste your hard earned :P

  • A very interesting bit of gear (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/lytro and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJ9W5TGbanI)… many drawbacks but still a technical marvel. No way would I pay RRP for it then or now, but for $109? Tempting….

    old timer alert:

    [get off my lawn]
I remember when it cost around $30 to buy, process, and print a roll of film - so this is like the cost of putting three rolls through my camera way back when…. heck, it wasn't that long ago that a 2GB card cost $100 and this has four times that amount of space.

Back then we didn't take 100 photos of our lunch! We had 24-36 exposures per film and only took good photos :D

      • +2

20 good photos and 4 photos of shit around you because you wanted to finish the roll to send it off for processing.

just get the HTC M8 phone instead, has this function built-in!

    • +4

No, the HTC fakes it. It takes a depth-map while taking the photo, and then uses it to apply a blur filter to the (crystal clear) photograph that the phone took.
In contrast, the Lytro 'image' includes information about the angle of entry of the light and by selecting light based on angle it can 'refocus' the image. There is a decent article about how the Lytro works on HowStuffWorks.
The effect can be very similar, or the same, but the underlying technology is different.

It is a pretty awesome tech, but only works well in quite good light.

(If it does drop to $50 I'll certainly wind up with one)

I have one, bought from COTD recently.

Its a fun gadget, You can only adjust the focus for a couple of meters. Its useful for the purpose I bought it for; close up product photography like to use for thumbnails with a nice background blur effect on rollover… Resolution is pretty bad, 1024x1024, it takes square photos. There is 3rd party software available that lets you into the file format and do some fun things with the images, like focus everything, get a slightly larger resolution image. You can hook it up to an ipad over adhoc wifi but the desktop app has more functionality. Its a toy, but a fun one..

Ordered. Damn you, OP. Yet more useless rubbish to put next to my ever increasing Jenga tower of eneloops. ;-)

    • Well, have it now and have played with it a little. As expected the actual resolution is pretty ordinary… think webcam….. but that's not the point with it. As for the unit itself, well it has obviously been in storage for a while so the battery was totally dead - needed to put on charge for a while then do a hard reset by holding the power button down for 45 seconds or so….. and there was some dust on the front lens, but easily cleaned with the lenspen. It was then just a matter of installing the software, waiting until it was fully charged, and then updating the firmware. Overall pretty happy with my new toy! ;-)

  • When I first saw these I got excited, was incorrectly thinking that they might have been using femto-photography as per: http://www.ted.com/talks/ramesh_raskar_a_camera_that_takes_o…

…oh well, cool gadget for what they are though! ;)

    At $110, nah. $50 - sure.

    • +1

Just wait. This thing isn't selling and the V2 is out.

  • +1

Their site said the deal would end in an hour.
Now they have a better deal.
