  They are 2 aussies that run a back packers and hire a boat direct, then charge people to get on it. was $35 a head fixed price last time.

  It was a little rowdy but it should give you a idea on price

    My 2 cents is hire one at Halong bay when you get there if you have the time to gamble. Three of us paid US$50 total. Included the above pretty much but not fancy as that boat. We did stay overnight on a fish farm which was awesome culture experience. Plus i got smashed in an arm wrestle and on Vietnamese vodka…

    I also hired a random local from Bến Bèo pier (Cát Bà island) to cruise around the bay, was a bit more of an experience than a packaged tour and I had little interest in going to/visiting the same place as 1000 other tourists … but each to their own, I would presume the packaged tour offers a step up in luxury.

    My company is not specialized in promoting cruises, just that we got a good partnership with this cruise via serial bookings, so we got a lower price than other agent.

    As we all agree that this cruise is a little bit of higher class than the budget boats of around 30-40 USD.

    The average 3-star Halong Cruise is around 100 - 150 USD per person:

    There are still boats of the 30-50 USD price range running on daily basis, you could shop around in the tourist areas in Hanoi, you could get one of those deals.

    Do some advanced check of the actual boat quality, if you could actually get the name of the boat.
    It is a bit risky, but suitable to the budget of backpackers, and you could get to meet many like minded people.
