Use Wish Gift Cards to Purchase Different Gift Card

Hi all,

Just wondering if any one has been able to purchase one of the various different gift cards that Woolworths/Big W sell with a Wish Gift card?

Pretty much I have a Wish Gift card but I'd like to buy a JB HiFi gift card with it from Big W or Woolies.

Thanks.

i got opposite issue - got jbhi card and wanted to swap for wish card !

  • Is there a gift card exchange site in Australia? I know America has some good ones.

OP is in Melb and Rasun81 is in Sydney but if they happened to meet/travel they could swap ;-p assuming same values.

    • Great idea :)

    • There is but the site takes a cut of the face value of the card.

      • Which site is that?

        • @tomsco: They stopped doing this some months ago. There are no cards listed for sale anymore if you follow the link. I used to buy from there in the past. Now they just direct you to gifte, where they sell gift cards themselves at full price + postage cost. Costs more than in store.

  • You could try asking Woolies or BigW next time you are in the shop!!!

  • I have been refused. Checkout operator was backed up by the supervisor when I queried her refusal. I was told it's Woolworths policy. Gift cards cannot be purchased with gift cards.

    • was this just recently?

    Definitely possible.

Just have to do it at the self checkout. I had a $100 Big W gift card that I got through a $15 statement credit for $100 spend at Dick Smith via Amex. I wanted to swap it for an Wish card to buy groceries.

If you scan the Wish card at the self checkout at Big W, a staff member will come over and ask you how much you want to load on the card. They then put it in for you and walk away. You then pay for the card with your gift card and no one is any the wiser.

So in your scenario, just scan the JB card at the self checkout. Operator walks over and asks you how much. You tell them and they use their staff override code to put it on the card. When they walk away, choose to pay by card and use your Wish card to pay for the JB card.

    • Well done.

Did you realise that the Big W card would have worked as a payment method at Woolworths?

    • Big w at south yarra has signs on self weervice check out saying if purchasing gift cards, go to counter.

  • Sorry to bring up an old(ish) thread but any more stories on this? Seems like most people find it ok but a few have had issues?
Mostly since I spent wayyy too much on wish gift cards without making sure it's possible. Will find out either way soon I guess

    • Have you had any luck? I'm just wondering if Woolworths have tightened up this practice through self checkout and warning their staff not to do it.

I'm interested in purchasing physical gift cards using eGift one.

      • Didn't get a chance to try it out I'm afraid.

  • Sorry for resurrecting an old thread.

Is it still possible to use Wish Gift Cards to Purchase Different Gift Card?

Lol, I just replied to a old post! Got confused.

      Here's my contribution anyway.

Your results are always going to vary depending on which staff member you deal with.

One strategy is to buy some groceries at the same time as you are purchasing the gift card. This makes it less obvious what you are doing. Only produce your Wish card right at the end when you are paying. Don't ask too many questions. The system will allow the purchase, it's the staff who will stop it. I've purchased gift cards with Wish cards. I've also purchased Wish cards with Wish cards when I wanted to give a small gift card as a present.

  • When I go to pay in self service with gift card it does not work in woolies… What is the technique?

  • Very old thread - but the one that came up in my Google search

I just tried the 'self service' checkout method - and when going to pay with a gift card it said "illegal items in cart" and stopped me :(
(I got some groceries too, hoping to fool it!)

Looks like Woolies has cracked down on this.

I did do it a few months ago at Coles though, and had no problem!

    • Did it really say illegal?

      • Yeah - I'm assuming the programming those terminals use, have that terminology
(<if> cart contains: gift card <and> payment method = gift card <result> Illegal operation)
