Inside this case lives the Legen…Wait for it…Dary — Hitachi 4TB CoolSpin HDD!

Equal lowest price ever, though dampened slightly by the AUD.

In my humble opinion, the best non-enterprise drive around today. Awesome for NAS or whatever your application unless you need the fastest drive on the planet, which this is not (it's ~5900RPM) but it's amazing for reliability and is the quietest drive I've ever owned.

Items: $129.99
Shipping & handling: $14.71
Total before tax: $144.70

Here's a table (Thanks BluBoy for getting the data)

Good price. If I didn't already have a hundred external drives lying around I would buy this.

    • I got sick of waiting and bought the internals at $149 USD from B&H some time back. This is a much better deal than that was due to Amazon's cheaper shipping. I ended up paying ~AUD$185/unit, though I wanted genuine internals at the time, but I will consider topping up my NAS with 2 more from this deal :)

The AUD-USD is holding around $0.87 at the moment which is probably as good as it's going to get IMO.

      • Click_It did you get the drives from B&H? How are they performing?

        • Yes I did, they are fantastic. On 24/7 minus a storm or two since receiving them. Not the fastest HDD on earth but we knew that, not the coolest HDD on earth but still pretty low temps. They certainly are very quiet though. Makes my other 5400rpms sound like clunkers.

Planned for the worst, hoping for the best - by this I mean I have double redundancy in place (can lose 2 drives without any data loss) and have critical data backing up to a secondary NAS and also to an external site (guess who has lost data one too many times in the past?)

But in short these drives have been nothing short of amazing.

        • @Click_It: That sounds good about the HDDs. Did you find out about the warranty or RMA process if you had to use it?

        • @venomx2:

Never really looked further into that one. I guess I'll find out if the time comes but I'm quietly confident. The NAS is a good environment for hdds, 2 fans constantly on them keeps temps low even on hot days.

    • You da man! Thanks mate :D

    • +1

This seller has only 5 of these available

      That's not good..

      • When I posted the deal it said there were 17 remaining with more arriving soon, now it doesn't mention stock level at all.

        • Make sure to select the 4tb. 2tb showing available form these sellers. 4tb Showing 17 left (more arriving soon)

        • @g12345567:

Strange, I could swear I was on the 4TB before. Anyhow there appears to be 15 left now. I wonder if an OzBargainer bought 2…

Did amazon change their combined shipping costs over the last year or so? I remember getting a lot better deals when buying multiple items in the past.

If you are gutting them and want faster (and louder) the Seagate 4TB & 5TB's are down to US$129 & $169, they run 7200rpm drives last time I checked.

    • +2

Yea, Seagate don't have the greatest reputation around here.
It is mostly anecdotal evidence, but there does seem to be some stats agreeing with this: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-update…

      • +3

Yep, even though there are those who slam backblaze, I find their results generally agreeable.

I'm considering crossing to the dark side in the future and buying a 6TB Seagate for weekly backup duties. If it can survive the year I might consider them for involved tasks. To be perfectly fair to the brand, I think they've been relatively okay since the disastrous 3TB bad egg.

It'll be interesting to see who brings out 8TB+ drives first. They all essentially have samples of them already.

      • I haven't worked out the maths … but if we take the Backblaze results as correct (there are some issues with it according to some such as http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/02/17/backblaze_how_not_to… for example) it still makes no sense at all to me to ignore such such a large discount given the small differences in rates of failure between Seagate and it's competitors.

Obviously everyone's is different but that's my situation.

        • +2

It depends if you value your data. Backblaze has enough drives to measure the statistics, there are a few small issues, but those are with enterprise drives. Consumer drives stats are on around 20,000 drives. Seagate comes out looking bad.

Didn't buy but loved your inclusion of shipping cost for multiple drives. Top notch!

    • +1 great to see the price schedule… thinking like an ozbargainer!

      • Glad you guys like it :)

Unfortunately, I think videoman's point above could be correct, I'm sure Amazon used to discount harder on multiple purchases than is now the case. If this price stands for a few days, I'll probably just buy 1.

  • thanks..

Such a nice deal for a big portable storage option however out of 89 reviews 10 reviews with 1 star ratings makes me think again…

    http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Touro-Desktop-External-0S03396/pr…

    • The internet's full of 1-or-10 reviews (for everything). I generally ignore both scores.

  • Sweet Deal!

  • I've got 4 x 4tb 7200rpm Deskstars in my Microserver. Working beautifully. Would get these if I needed more.

  • Seems to have gone up. Price now shows USD 153.89 plus shipping.

  • PRICE WENT DOWN!

    It is currently US$129.99 + US$14.71 shipping = US$144.70 (~AU$164)
That is a super price for this HDD! Thanks OP!

Whoever bought it recently may try their luck with Amazon online chat to have the price adjusted.

Edit: Those are on back order, expected delivery 7 Nov.

  • It is a good: got two with this deal. Just before Black Friday splurge?
