How does a dual core 1.8ghz qualify as i5? Intel are crazy man.

    • Welcome to the world of ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) CPUs, the product of the ultrabook craze

Also this model for $499.10 after cashback http://www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/acer-aspire-15…. This was the one that was supposed to be $378.20 (after cash back) in the recent DS ebay sale until they jacked up the price just before the sale

  • This processor belongs in a Surface Pro 1 not a full size laptop… still, for the price, not terrible. Don't expect great battery life tho, being an Ivy Bridge CPU. I'd say worth $420-450

Uh. What? It's a 3rd gen i5, how is that not a good processor? O_o

FYI - I've used, and sold, many laptops with that processor (before the 4th gen's came in) and have no complaints about speed…

What do you want - an i7? It's a freaking budget laptop!!! Be glad it's not a Celeron!

I'm getting at it being a ULV, slower than a regular i5, belongs in surface and ultrabooks. Putting it in a full size laptop is kind of deceptive because the customer that doesn't know any better expects the performance of a proper i5 and doesn't get it. But Like i said, for the price, not terrible.
But they are bringing out 5th gen now or soon aren't they? Must be clearing old stock.

I just wish people were more aware of what they are buying, because the manufacturers ans retailers get away with so much borderline deception to customers with: hdd vs ssd, weak dedicated graphics cards for "gaming laptops", and, when this laptop was full price, i'd say the weak ULV processor in this that looks like a full spec i5, and was probably marketed alongside other full spec i5s. Most lay people don't understand the suffix after the i5.

        • -@ Richter Could not agree with you more. I feel the same way as you on this. The whole dual core, quad core, i3, i5, i7 marketing strategy has been broadly manipulated and stretched out to the max. Although people say "buyer beware" most people would not know too many details.

Also because the smaller ULV CPU's use less power, they often reduce the size of the battery, even in full size 15.4" laptops with DVD drives. Sure, it might make it slightly thinner/lighter, but what you gain in efficiency, you lose in capacity and end up with similar or slightly improved stamina with less power for similar price.

If you look around, you can still find some laptops with a full voltage i5 3rd gen for $500-$800, but when they are gone, you;ll need to pay a premium. From then on, most laptops under $800 will have ULV CPU's. Well, they say this is progress, no wonder laptop sales have become stagnant.

Battery life on an ULV Ivy Bridge was not bad. For the money this laptop is pretty good. I'm not a fan of Acer though

not expired use code "super8", also has free delivery.
    now: Total $459.08

Now the E5-571-51ZL is $699 (before discount), up from $598. Dammit dick.

here is what really bugs me with Acer laptops, they always seem to put in undersized batteries! i mean this has a 15.6" lcd, most laptops this size have a 6 cell battery, but Acer, no, you will have to make do with a 4 cell battery!

    • +1

Doing that to reduce thickness and weight and cost, and because modern processors and other components are more energy efficient meaning they can get the same or better battery life out of a smaller battery. But I agree, the option of a bigger battery in more models would be very welcome.

      • +1

if this laptop used a 4th gen cpu, ok, you can put in a smaller battery, instead of above average runtime with a 6 cell you get average runtime with a 4 cell, then again using a 3rd gen cpu and a smaller battery is cheaper, and if anything Acer is known for their 'cheaper' laptops

-@ morpheu Most brands are doing this in their entry and middle models. Some $1000+ ultrabooks I have seen with only a 2 cell ( although probably good quality ones I hoop ). This is a good balance of specs for the price. Install a cheap ssd to end up with nice responsive system with better stamina too.
